Description: This report is the first annual report submitted in partialfulfillment of Research Contract No. S-1902 between the Department of Fish and Game and the Pacific Gas and Electric Company. Through this contract the Department of Fish and Game is to conduct a preoperational ecological study to establish a base line inventory of the marine biota with special reference to fish and to abalone, including food chains. This first annual report covers all work from September 1971 through December 1972.This annual report covers the first 18 month period of the project from July 1, 1971 through December 31, 1972. The report includes results (discussion and tables) of our subtidal, intertidal, sportfishery, fish collection, fish food habit, and plankton studies. The quarterly reportfor October 1 to December 31, 1972 is included herein and these data are incorporated in this annual report. (86pp.)

Description: During the Quarter we surveyed seven permanent and 48 random subtidal stations. In addition a new study was undertaken with the surveying of one random subtidal station in Diablo Cove where counts were made of small invertebrates within four 1/4-m quadrats. Red abalone, Haliotis rufescens, numbers continued to decrease at random as well as permanent stations in Diablo Cove. Bull kelp, Nereocystis lustkeana, more than doubled in density in Diablo Cove. Permanent stations showed a decline in giant red sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus franciscanus, numbers while random stations indicated an increase in abundance. (14pp.)The commercial sea urchin fishery was inactive. Commercial abalone fishermen were observed infrequently in the Pecho Rock area.

Description: Rough seas and the hiring freeze further delayed completionof our field and laboratory work. All random 1/4-m2 stations were completed in Diablo Covebut ten stations remain in the North Control. Ninerandom fish species counts were conducted in Diablo Cove.Very few sea otters, Enhydra lutris, were observed duringthis quarter, none in Diablo Cove. (10pp.)

Description: Although we continue to monitor permanent stationson a regular basis, we have suspended our 30-m2random subtidal and 1/4-m2 random intertidal studiesduring this interim year. The 1/4-m2 random subtidal study is being continued and we have added a new subtidal method of determining fish abundance.Giant red sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus franciscanus, numbers continue to decline at their last "stronghold"in our subtidal study area, permanent station15. The recruitment of juvenile blue rockfish,Sebastes mystinus, appears to be either late orlow this year in our study areas. The most abundantfish, so far, from the new method of assessment, are adult blue rockfish, kelp greenling,Hexagrammos decagrammus, and gopher rockfish,Sebastes carnatus.Various trends of abalone abundance at the permanentintertidal stations, increasing at some, decreasing at others, were observed during thisquarter.Sea otters, Enhydra lutris, seem to have reachedtheir annual springtime peak in abundance duringApril and May. Several otters were seen raftingand foraging around and near the intake covebreakwaters, apparently becoming emboldened tohuman presence. (18pp.)

Description: Field work for this quarter consisted of completion of random 1/4-m2 subtidal stations from the summer sampling season. In addition, one permanent subtidal station was surveyed. No intertidal stations were surveyed. Sea otters, Enhydra lutris, remained scarce in the vicinity of the power plant.Lab work was comprised of processing subtidal algaesamples and sorting and identifying invertebrates fromintertidal samples. Analysis of preoperational datafor final report proceeded apace. (7pp.)

Description: During the quarter a total of 38 random 30-m2and 152 random 1/4-m2 subtidal stations weresurveyed. Red abalone, Haliotis rufescens, densities remained very low. There was a continueddecline in densities of giant red seaurchins, Strongylocentrotus franciscanus, inDiablo Cove as well as the North Control area. The annual shore census of bull kelp, Nereocystisluetkeana, revealed the lowest number of plantsin the surface canopy in Diablo Cove since 1973. The subtidal station data supported this observation.Sea otter, Enhydra lutris, observations werecontinued. A small group of otters continuedto raft in the Cove east of Lion Rock. Someof these otters probably forage as far south asSouth Cove. The survey of 11 random intertidal stationscompleted our Upwelling sampling effort. (16pp.)

Description: Field work was limited to monitoring permanentintertidal and subtidal stations. Only a fewstations were surveyed due to a long series ofwinter storms which produced large seas.Office and laboratory work was devoted to completing computer data sheets for keypunching, completing the 1976/77 annual report and several quarterly reports, and processing the remaining algae samples collected at subtidal and intertidal stations in 1977.Sea otter activity increased in South Cove andDiablo Cove where sea otters were observed onfive out of 20 observation days. Description: In December 1964 interviewing of sport crab fishermen wasbegun in Humboldt Bay. A similar study was initiated inCrescent City in 1965. Fifty-four anglers interviewed atHumboldt Bay in 1964 and 1965 caught 27 Dungeness crabs,Cancer magister. The total estimated catch during thesampling period was 400 Dungeness crabs.Skiff fishermen in Crescent City caught an estimated 6,318Dungeness crabs during the 1965-66 season; 1,666 Dungenesscrabs during the 1966-67 season and 5,054 Dungeness crabsduring the 1967-68 season. There is a good potential forincreased fishing in Crescent City Harbor, Trinidad Bay andShelter Cove. (10p.)
