Notes: Abstract The gonads of Serranus cabrilla (Linnaeus, 1758) from the Canary Islands were studied between September 1992 and July 1993. Macroscopic classification of the maturity stages was compared with histolog ical classification of gonad characteristics, and the effect␣of the classification method on the determination of the spawning season and size at maturity was investigated. Analysis of gonad organization and development confirmed that this species is synchronously hermaphroditic. Ovarian-tissue development is asynchronous, and testicular tissue consists of continuous spermatogonia. Six stages of oogenesis and five of spermatogenesis are described, based on differences in staining and in size and on differences in the nucleus and cytoplasm structure as viewed through a light microscope. Two types of atretic degeneration of eggs are also described. Agreement between macroscopic and histological staging was low, although both methods provided similar results in spawning-season determination and size at maturity. The spawning season of S. cabrilla is from February to July, with a peak in May. Fish size at first maturity (size at which 50% of all fish sampled are in relevant maturity stage) is 152 mm standard length (SL), and size at mass maturity (size at which 95% of all fish sampled are in relevant maturity stage) is 167 mm SL.

Notes: Variations in the morphology of saccular otoliths (sagittae) among three sympatric species of the genus Serranus(S. atricauda, S. cabrilla and S. scriba) from the Canary Islands were investigated. Although the otolith gross morphology was similar among species, S. scriba was distinct in having a rostrum which had a slight turning at the tip and a more funnel-like ostium. The shallower water species (S. scriba) had otolith and sulcus areas which were smaller than the deeper water species (S. cabrilla and S. atricauda). The sulcus acusticus and ostium size were correlated with the habit depth of the species, with the highest values in the deepest species, S. cabrilla. The otolith outline shape indices changed with size (total length) of the species, and allowed the separation of the species by means of a discriminate function.

Notes: We investigate functions that are exact solutions to chaotic dynamical systems. A generalization of these functions can produce truly random numbers. For the first time, we present solutions to random maps. This allows us to check, analytically, some recent results about the complexity of random dynamical systems. We confirm the result that a negative Lyapunov exponent does not imply predictability in random systems. We test the effectiveness of forecasting methods in distinguishing between chaotic and random time series. Using the explicit random functions, we can give explicit analytical formulas for the output signal in some systems with stochastic resonance. We study the influence of chaos on the stochastic resonance. We show, theoretically, the existence of a new type of solitonic stochastic resonance, where the shape of the kink is crucial. Using our models we can predict specific patterns in the output signal of stochastic resonance systems. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The electrical, magnetic and thermal properties of UCu4Ni show temperature dependencies suggestive of non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior. In this work, we present an interpretation of these properties in terms of a Kondo disorder model for NFL behavior. The overall magnitude and temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat are found to be consistent with this model, assuming reasonable values of the relevant parameters, the average Kondo temperature (TK), the Kondo coupling constant (λ) and the distribution width w. These results are discussed in comparison with those obtained for other NFL systems, as UCu4Pd and UCu3.5Pd1.5. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In situ phase-modulated ellipsometry was employed to monitor the nucleation and growth processes of diamond thin films fabricated by chemical vapor deposition. The effective extinction coefficient (k) at 1.96 eV was used as a basis for dividing the deposition process into intervals. The film growth was aborted at various k values yielding diamond film samples that represent snapshots of the growth process at different stages. Ex situ characterization of the films was performed using Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction. The results indicate that the diamond film deposition process consists of various stages in which the crystalline quality, the net compressive stress, and the relative amount of non-sp3 carbon follow different trends. A correlation between the effective k value measured in situ and the film microstructure characterized ex situ was established which enables the monitoring of the diamond film growth process in real time. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The interdiffusion process between Gd and Co has been investigated in several series of multilayered films consisting of Co and different GdCo alloys (Gd1−xCox)/Co (x=0, 0.37, and 0.60). Grazing incidence x-ray profiles provided a preliminary insight into the structure of the samples. Electrical resistivity measurements were performed in a temperature range between 8 and 300 K. For the three series, the room temperature electrical resistivity shows a clear fall once a critical Co thickness is surpassed, which we interpret as due to the growth of pure polycrystalline Co between the alloy layers. A simple model allows us to quantify the amount of Co diffused into the alloy layer. The results will be discussed considering the possible decrease of interdiffusion effects when Co is deposited onto the more stable GdCo alloys. This leads to a well defined multilayered structure, something that is essential for practical applications and for the theoretical study of its underlying physics. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Sagittal otoliths from the Atlantic and Mediterranean regions of Serranus cabrilla L. were compared using shape indices (form-factor, roundness, circularity, rectangularity, ellipticity and eccentricity). Regional differences were best described by form-factor, circularity and eccentricity variables. The canonical discriminant functions were built with form-factor or rectangularity indices. The results indicated slight regional variations. The G-test was the criterion more useful to identify the otolith origin in the discriminant analysis.

Notes: This paper provides comparative information on the reproductive biology of the alfonsino, Beryx splendens Lowe, 1834, species with commercial interest in the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands. A total of 846 individuals from Azores (14.0–42.0 cm fork length), 621 from Madeira (17.2–50.0 cm fork length) and 643 from the Canaries (18.2–38.9 cm fork length) were used for the study. The alfonsino is gonochoric with no evidence of sexual dimorphism. Females are more abundant than males; this dominance probably reflects certain differences in the spatial distribution and/or the catchability of males and females in the Macaronesian archipelagos. The spawning season was distinct for the three Macaronesian areas, with an observed North–South variation in the reproductive period: September–March in the Azores, March–June in Madeira and July–September in the Canary Islands. The size at sexual maturity estimated for Madeira and the Canary Islands is similar (32 and 30 cm fork length, respectively), while for the Azores it is reached at smaller length (23 cm fork length). The differences observed in the size at sexual maturity can be explained by the different exploitation levels in each archipelago. Life-history parameters of the alfonsino suggest that this species has a specialistic life-history strategy and fisheries based on this species are more susceptible to growth overfishing and population depletion.
