    Notes: Abstract LetQ(x,y,z,t,u) be a real indefinite quadratic form in five variables of type (3,2) or (2,3) and determinantD≠0. The given any real numbersx 0,y 0,z 0,t 0,u 0 we can find integersx,y,z,t,u, satisfying $$|Q(x + x_0 ,y + y_0 ,z + z_0 ,t + t_0 ,u + u_0 )| \leqslant (\frac{1}{4}|D|)^{{\raise0.7ex\hbox{$1$} \!\mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 5}}\right.\kern-\nulldelimiterspace}\!\lower0.7ex\hbox{$5$}}} .$$ All the cases when the sign of equality holds are also determined.

Notes: Abstract The view-obstruction problem for ann-dimensional closed convex bodyC containing the origin in its interior has been formulated by T. W. Cusick in 1973. The problem is to determine the constantK(C) defined to be the infimum of those α〉0 such that for any rayL starting from the origin and lying in the positive quadrant there are non-negative integersm 1,...,m n for whichL intersects αC+(m 1+1/2,...,m n +1/2). Here a conjecture of T. W. Cusick for the 3-dimensional spheres with centre 0 is proved. In fact an infinite sequence of isolated minima is obtained.

Notes: Abstract In the view-obstruction problem, congruent, closed convex bodies centred at the points $$\frac{1}{2},{\text{ }}...{\text{ , }}\frac{{\text{1}}}{{\text{2}}} + \mathbb{Z}^n $$ in ℝ n are expanded uniformly until they block all rays from the origin into the open positive cone. The central problem is to determine the minimal blocking size. In the case of spheres of diameter 1 and cubes of side 1 these values are known forn=2, 3 and 4. Here we show that in ℝ5, this value for the sphere of diameter 1 is $$\sqrt {41/42} $$ .

Notes: Abstract A sex attractant has been isolated from virgin female oak leaf rollers (OLR) (Archips semiferanus Walker: Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) by extraction of the last two abdominal segments with methylene chloride. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) of the crude extract on silica gel, and subsequent gas chromatography of the active TLC fraction on 5% SE-30, resulted in a single active peak. The active peak was collected and rechromatographed on 10% diethylene glycol succinate (DEGS). One active region (A) collected on the DEGS column elicited an attractant response when tested on OLR males in a laboratory flight chamber and successfully trapped males in field tests. A second region (B) elicited only sexual stimulation (no attractant behavior) in the flight chamber and failed to trap males in the field. Qualitative laboratory and field tests of a mixture of regions A and B resulted in synergism of the attractant response. Chemical functional group tests and comparison of gas chromatographic properties of the active attractant with standards indicate that the attractant is a stable unsaturated acetate with a probable chain length of fourteen carbons. Synthetic standards, reported to be attractants in other tortricid species, namely cis and trans, 9- and 11-tetradecenyl acetates, elicited no attractant behavior in laboratory or field tests.

Notes: Abstract Host-finding by the parasitic wasp Orgilus lepidus, a braconid parasite, is mediated by two kairomones present in the frass of the host insect, the potato tuberworm. A volatile substance identified as heptanoic acid elicits heightened searching behavior, resulting in the parasite contacting the frass. A contact chemical stimulus in the frass induces the parasite to probe the substrate with the ovipositor, culminating in contact with the host.

Description: Magmas from SW Pacific back-arc basins have geochemical and isotopic signatures indicating variable mantle and subduction-derived components. Basalts from South Fiji Basin (SFB) are little influenced by subduction, but come from variably enriched mantle, resulting from mixing between enriched mantle, like FOZO, and depleted mantle, like DMM. The same components are present in the Havre Trough mantle, but Havre Trough basalts come from a mantle wedge to which a greater proportion of subduction-derived components are added. Their slab-derived components are isotopically similar to locally subducting sediment, with variable Sr and Pb from altered oceanic crust. Their compositional diversity correlates with morphology, previously described as contrasting Arc-type and Rift-type back-arc regimes. Geochemical modeling indicates that material is added as both supercritical fluids and slab melts below the back-arc, is locally distinct, and correlate with differences in the predicted slab-surface pressure and temperature conditions. Deeper slab surfaces correspond to higher-temperatures at a given distance from the volcanic front, but not necessarily with an increase in the amount of slab-derived material. Slab fluxes for rift-type basalts are consistent with predicted slab-surface temperatures at or below the water-saturated solidus. However, some are consistent with melting in equilibrium with residual rutile, zircon and monazite, so melting may have occurred by fluid fluxing of the slab surface, requiring external fluids from within the slab. Arc-type basalts are explained by thermal anomalies in the mantle wedge, which may correspond to locally hotter slab-surface temperatures and more fractionated slab-derived component signatures in their source.
