    Notes: Abstract An innovative approach to nondestructive evaluation (NDE) using noncontacting optical sensors has demonstrated. In this effort a single mode optical fiber interferometer (OFI) was used to sense the presence and form of Rayleigh waves traveling along the surface of a steel test bar at a velocity of nearly 3mm/µs. Acousto-optic time-domain data was successfully used to detect the presence and locate the position of a test “flaw” (a machined slot) in the bar, and spectrum analysis was used to estimate its geometry and size. This approach has many potential applications in the ultrasonic evaluation of real flaws in structures with complex geometries. Coupled with the authors' earlier work demonstrating the feasibility of generating acoustic waves in metals using laser light pulses transmitted through the fiber optic probes, this latest achievement points to the development of a fully noncontacting, fiber optic based thermal-acousto-photonic (TAP) NDE system, with potential applications to the reliability testing of many important structures where composition, scale, geometry, or restricted access preclude the use of conventional NDE techniques.

    Notes: Abstract. This article introduces a new strategy for extracting Rayleigh waves from a noisy environment using a differential optical interferometer (DOI). The DOI consists of a bidirectional coupler; one arm, positioned over a test specimen, senses an acoustic signal immersed in noise while the other arm, positioned over an acoustic isolator, senses the noise alone. Analytical arguments show that when the coupler is designed properly, the phase shifts between the signals returning to a photodetector produce an intensity modulation that is directly proportional to the pure acoustic signal. The analysis is verified when the DOI is used to track the surface displacement of a piezoelectric transducer. Then, random noise is introduced into an aluminum test specimen using a motor equipped with a rotating eccentric cam. The DOI is used to subtract the relatively high-amplitude but low-frequency mechanical vibrations of the test surface from a combined signal that includes the desired Rayleigh wave. Finally, an experimental configuration is demonstrated which allows an acoustic signal to be extracted from noise of a similar frequency.

    Notes: Abstract Holography is used to study thermally induced deformation in a rock specimen extracted from a cubical sample taken during a geological survey. Experiments are conducted over small temperature increments on the order of a few degrees Fahrenheit, to suppress extraneous variations in optical path which could otherwise be introduced by temperature gradients and convection currents in the air surrounding the specimen. The concept of an optical rosette is introduced to predict principal strains and their corresponding directions from holographically obtained data. Values measured for thermal coefficients of expansion fall within the range of those documented by other investigators using more conventional experimental methods.

The technique does not require a partially reflecting mirror, patterns can be optically filtered for better fringe contrast and in-plane displacement can be recorded without making any modifications in the experimental setup. Results obtained from two-and three-dimensional surfaces agree well with theory and verify analytical arguments presented throughout the paper.

    Notes: Abstract An improved method for holographically recording displacement through fiber optics is presented. The object is illuminated by focusing the exit end of a multimode fiber bundle on the test surface. The real image of the object is transmitted through a second coherent bundle to a photographic plate where it is recorded using a reference wave front. The resulting image-plane hologram is reconstructed in white light. Experimental results agree well with theory and demonstrate the potential of measuring displacement on surfaces far removed from the basic holographic setup; or, in remote areas of a structure where optical access is limited.

    Notes: Abstract This paper explores the potential of using image-plane holography as a tool in experimental mechanics to determine both ‘in-plane’ and ‘out-of-plane’ displacement components. Collimated-illumination and telecentric-imaging project displacement along common-sensitivity vectors over the full-field while white-light reconstruction helps to reduce speckle noise which allows high-density fringe gradients of good quality to be recorded. A holographic-image-plane multiplexing arrangement is developed to record different displacement components on a single hologram. Experiments are designed so that both reconstruction and optical filtering can be performed without a major modification of optical components. Displacements obtained from a centrally loaded circularly clamped plate are compared to their theoretical counterparts. Results show that image-plane techniques offer many distinct advantages over conventional methods for holographic analysis of displacement on diffuse surfaces.
