Notes: Summary The effect of pyridine at a fixed concentration of perchloric acid (0.36 M) on the sorption of some common cations on a cation exchanger (Dowex 50W-X8; in Naform) is described. The metal concentrations were such that the ratio of total amount of cation to total resin capacity ≈0.45, sufficient to ensure exchange. The deviation in sorption behaviour of cations has been discussed on the basis of complexation with pyridine and the perchlorate effect. From the determination of the distribution coefficients (Λ) and separation factors as a function of pyridine concentration, separation possibilities for a number of binary and ternary mixtures are proposed.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Trennung von U, Pb, Bi und Th wurde mit dem Ringofen durchgeführt.
Notes: Summary The separation of uranium, lead, bismuth and thorium from a drop of solution containing uranyl acetate, lead nitrate, bismuth nitrate and thorium nitrate has been achieved, using the ring oven technique. The drop was taken on a circular filter paper, treated with1 N HNO3 and uranium was washed to the ring zone with n-butanol. Lead was next washed to the ring zone on another filter paper using 20% aqueous ethylenediamine hydrate. The spot was then treated with 1% aqueous sodium diethyldithioearbamate and bismuth was transported to the ring zone on a third paper with ethyl acetate. Finally 0.5N HNO3 was employed to transfer thorium to the ring zone. The separated rings were then compared with standard rings prepared similarly to compute the amounts of the ions present.

Notes: Summary The utility of the ring electrographic technique as a non-destructive method of analysis of metallic artefacts of archeological importance is sufficiently accurate to give archeological meaningful results The electrographic sampling technique has been modified to give easier and more reliable sampling. The method is of particular value in the analysis of copper and silver coins.

Notes: Summary A rigorous analysis of the effect of various concentrations (0.02–1.60M) of ammonium acetate on the distribution coefficients (K) of a number of metal ions using cation exchanger Dowex 50W-X8 (100–200 mesh NH4 +-form) has been made. On account of the low affinity of U(VI) for resin in ≥0.20M NH4OAc it can be separated from all other metal ions. HighK values of Sr(II), Ba(II) and Hg(II) at higher ≥0.50M NH4OAc are responsible for their separation from others. The abnormal column Chromatographic behaviour of Al(III) permits its separation from other metal ions including U(VI), Sr(II), Ba(II), Hg(II). A number of binary and ternary separations have been achieved.

Notes: Summary Bivalent and trivalent cobalt complexes with 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN), PAN+1, 10-phenanthroline and PAN+2, 2′-bipyridyl were prepared and characterized by physico-chemical and magnetic measurements. The spectral studies suggest that PAN behaves as a bidentate ligand and is coordinated to metal ions through oxygen and (pyridine) nitrogen, whereas 1, 10-phenanthroline and 2, 2′-bipyridyl are coordinated through (pyridine) nitrogen. The tentative ν(M−O) and ν(M−N) band assignments in the lower i.r. region, and magnetic moment data favour four coordination for the complexes studied.

Notes: Summary Complexes of 5-chlorouracil (5-ClU) (1) with 3d metal ions were characterized by elemental analysis, various spectroscopic methods (i.r., u.v. spectroscopy) and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The spectral evidence suggest that 5-ClU behaves as bidentate ligand in NiII, CuII, ZnII, and CdII compounds, coordinating through its one carbonyl oxygen and one nitrogen whereas with MnII and CoII it coordinates through the carbonyl oxygen only. The insolubility of the new complexes in organic solvents suggests that these are polymeric except for the CoII complex which is soluble in pyridine. There is probable OH bridging in the MnII and CuII complexes and the 5-ClU may bridge in the rest.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Zur Trennung und Bestimmung von Ca, Sr und Ba im Mikromaßstab wird die Ringofen-Technik empfohlen.
Notes: Summary The ring-oven technique is recommended for the identification and determination of Ca, Sr and Ba in the micro scale. The elements are first converted into their nitrates and Ca is washed out by a mixture of absolute alcohol and ether. Sr is then separated from Ba as soluble diethyldithiocarbamidate in alcohol-ether. The rings obtained are developed by rhodizonate (Sr, Ba) and pyrogallol (Ca). Quantitative determinations are possible by comparison with standard rings. 0.60 μg of Ca, 1.31 μg of Sr and 8.24 μg of Ba can be determined with an error lower than 6%.
