    Notes: Abstract Previous reports have indicated that thyroid gland activity, is depressed in the heat. Total thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) serum levels in 17 workers of the metal work shop at a plant near the Dead Sea and 8 workers in Beer Sheva, Israel were examined. The metal workshop of the plant near the Dead Sea is part of a large chemical plant. The one in Beer Sheva is part of a large construction company. Maintenance work, as well as metal work projects are performed in both workshops. During the work shifts, the workers of the Dead Sea plant were exposed to temperatures ranging from 30–36°C (May–Oct.) and 14–21°C (Dec.–Feb). In Beer Sheva the range was 25–32°C (June–Sept.) and 10– 17°C (Dec.–Feb.). Total T4 was measured by competitive protein binding and total T3 by radioimmunoassay in blood drawn before work (0700) in July and January. In summer. T4 was higher and T3 was lower for both groups than in winter. The observed summer T3 decrease may result from depressed extrathyroidal conversion of T4 to T3. We conclude that the regulation of energy metabolism in hot climates may be related to extrathyroidal conversion of T4 to T3.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary It is suggested that ultramicro amounts of cadmium be determined by titration of the Cd(II)-xylenol orange complex with 0.001M EDTA. In this way it is possible to determine as little as 0.4μg Cd(II) in the presence of the 40 fold amount of copper with satisfactory accuracy. The cadmium is separated from any other metals by using the ring furnace technique.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die quantitative Bestimmung von Ultramikromengen Cadmium durch Titration des Cd(II)-Xylenolorange-Komplexes mit 0,001-m ÄDTA wird vorgeschlagen. Man kann so noch 0,4μg Cd(II) in Anwesenheit der 40fachen Menge Kupfer mit zufriedenstellender Genauigkeit bestimmen. Von sonstigen Metallen wird das Cadmium mit Hilfe der Ringofentechnik abgetrennt.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary To determine ultramicro amounts of potassium, they are separated with aid of Na3Ag[Co(NO2)6] on the ring furnace. The reaction product is dissolved (with addition of thiocyanate) in hydrochlorid acid and the cobalt is titrated with EDTA. The natural radioactivity of the water among other things can be calculated from the equivalent quantity of potassium.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Zur Bestimmung von Ultramikromengen Kalium werden diese mit Hilfe von Na3Ag[Co(NO2)6] auf dem Ringofen abgetrennt. Das Reaktions-produkt wird unter Zusatz von Rhodanid in Salzsäure gelöst und das Kobalt mit ÄDTA titriert. Aus der äquivalenten Menge Kalium läßt sich unter anderem die natürliche Radioaktivität des Wassers ermitteln.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Various sorption possibilities of metal ions on cellulose-capillary carriers were discussed, especially with reference to the significance of this phenomenon in the transport of the metal ions from the precipitation zone (Ppz) into the circular zone (rz) on the ring furnace. Ion exchange as well as adsorption of the Ag(I) ions during the transport on the capillary carrier were excluded by favorable reaction conditions. The sorption, which was established under these conditions, is explained by a reduction of the Ag(I) ions on the cellulose. The extent of the reduction, labelled with the radio nuclide110mAg, was determined by surface measurement of the autoradiographic copying of the transport zone (Ptz) and also by the quantitative measurement of the activity of the sorbed silver by means of an anticoincidence counter. The extent of the sorption type of the Ag(I) ions on the cellulose-capillary carrier, was determined from the experimental results and by way of computations.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Verschiedene Sorptionsmöglichkeiten von Metall-Ionen auf Zellulose-Kapillarträgern wurden besprochen, vor allem mit Rücksicht auf die Bedeutung dieser Erscheinung beim Transport der Metall-Ionen aus der Niederschlagszone (Ppz) in die ringförmige Zone (Prz) auf dem Ringofen. Durch günstige Reaktionsverhältnisse wurden Ionenaustausch wie auch Adsorption der Ag(I)-Ionen während des Transportes auf dem Kapillarträger ausgeschlossen. Die Sorption, welche unter diesen Bedingungen festgestellt wurde, ist durch Reduktion der Ag(I)-Ionen auf der Zellulose erklärt. Das Reduktionsausmaß der Ag(I)-Ionen, markiert mit dem Radionuklid110mAg, wurde durch Flächenmessung der autoradiographischen Abdrücke der Transportzone (Ptz) wie auch durch die quantitative Messung der Aktivität des sorbierten Silbers mittels eines Antikoinzidenz-Zählers bestimmt. Aus den Versuchsergebnissen und im Wege von Berechnungen wurde das Ausmaß der beschriebenen Sorptionsart der Ag(I) -Ionen auf dem Zellulose-Kapillarträger ermittelt.
