Notes:
Conclusions 1. The softened zone (near a weld) is characterized by a coarser grain, a non-uniform distribution of structural components, a coarser pearlite and an increased α-phase lattice constant compared with the base metal and the heat-affected zone. 2. The softening band represents the section of the metal which was heated, during welding, to a temperature within the intercritical range (A1-A3).
