    Description: A well-preserved, diverse sporomorph flora of over 60 species has been found in Cores 120-750B-12W through -14R from the Southern Kerguelen Plateau. Analysis of the flora indicates that the terrestrial sediments overlaying the basaltic basement are late Early Cretaceous in age. Ranges of the sporomorphs in other parts of Gondwana and the morphology and paucity of angiosperm pollen grains confine the age of this section to the early to possibly early middle Albian. The Albian palynomorph assemblages in Hole 750B are composed primarily of fern spores and podocarpaceous pollen, and show most similarity to those from southern Australia. Changes in the flora through time reflect the successional vegetation changes on barren volcanic islands, beginning with high percentages of colonizing ferns and maturing into conifer (podocarp) forests. The flora shows some signs of endemism, which may be a result of the isolated position of the Kerguelen Islands during the Early Cretaceous. This endemism is expressed by high percentages of a distinctive monosulcate pollen species Ashmoripollis woodywisei n.sp. of pteridosperm or cycadophytean origin, and by a thick-walled, monosulcate angiosperm pollen species of the genus Clavatipollenites. The climatic conditions were probably cool to temperate (mean annual temperature approximately 7°-12°C) and humid (annual rainfall 〉1000 mm), analogous to modern Podocarpus-dominated forests in New Zealand and in South American mountain regions.

    Description: Pollen, spore, and dinoflagellate cyst floras of Late Cretaceous age were found at Sites 748 (120-748C-62R through -79R) and 750 (120-750B-11W) of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 120 to the Kerguelen Plateau area in the Southern Indian Ocean. The ranges of dinocyst and sporomorph species indicate ages between the Cenomanian and Coniacian (to possibly the early Santonian). The ratio of marine/terrestrial flora elements is extremely variable, showing a trend from highly terrestrial (up to —70%) in the late Cenomanian to highly marine (up to 90%) in the Coniacian/early Santonian. Low sedimentation rates of about 3-5 cm/1000 yr were calculated for the glauconitic sediments of Turonian and Coniacian age at Site 748 (lithologic Subunit IIIB).

    Description: Silicification is the most important process of fossilization resulting in the preservation of internal tissues in plants, thereby providing essential information on the anatomy, life history, and evolution of land plants. However, fundamental knowledge of silica uptake, precipitation, and contribution to in situ plant fossilization is limited. To identify the cellular pathway of aqueous silica and subsequent fluid–wood interaction processes, we investigated upright standing young trees of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) in the hot-spring environment of Cistern Spring, Yellowstone National Park, USA. Our multi-method analytical approach using x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron probe microanalyses shows that the surficial and internally co-precipitated silica–halite–gypsum assemblage traces the flow of silica-rich fluid and documents fluid retention after short-term hot-spring water immersion and evaporation. Element distribution maps reveal systematic 2D and 3D differences between silica quantities deposited in earlywood and latewood. The distribution of inorganic impurities in cell walls traces the anatomical structure of the wood and indicates rapid migration of homogeneous fluid into the waterlogged organic substrate. Our results show that the preferential pathway of silica-rich fluid into the above-ground wood was through the decorticated periphery which took place during a short-term flooding, ranging from days to weeks, of hot-spring fluid. In conclusion, the fluid retention capability in cellular pore space controls the in situ silicification process. The silicification of trees in growth position is a rapid process in which the in vivo transport of silica-rich fluid upward through the secondary xylem plays an insignificant role.
