    Notes: In southern Brazil, cold (La Niña) and warm (El Niño) episodes of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon cause drought and high rainfall, respectively. The low precipitation and freshwater outflow associated with La Niña during 1995–1996 were associated with an increase in the abundance of marine species in the Patos Lagoon estuary. During the 1997–1998 El Niño, high precipitation and river discharge were associated with low abundance of marine species in the estuary. ANOVA results showed a higher abundance during La Niña than El Niño for estuarine resident (RES) and estuarine dependent (DEP) fishes. During La Niña catch per unit of effort (CPUE) of RES increased from the marine to estuarine area, but during El Niño CPUE increased at the marine area and diminished during summer and autumn in some estuarine sites. DEP fishes had an opposite abundance pattern. During La Niña, these fishes were abundant at the coastal marine area and along some estuarine sites, but during El Niño, CPUE remained almost the same at the marine area but dropped along some estuarine sites. These different abundance patterns for dominant fish groups yielded a positive interaction between stations and climatic events. With higher river discharge and the consequent decline of dominant euryhaline fishes, such as Mugil platanus and Atherinella brasiliensis, freshwater species increased in abundance and richness in the shallow waters of the stuary. The ENSO phenomenon influences precipitation and estuarine salinity in southern Brazil and thereby seems to have a strong influence on recruitment, immigration, and emigration dynamics of fish species living within and adjacent to estuarine habitats.

    Notes: Abstract Cartilage growth and remodeling are known to be influenced by the biochemical and mechanical environment of the tissue. Previous investigators have shown that chemical factors that are relevant to mechanical loading, such as osmotic pressure and pH, induce changes in cartilage metabolism in vitro. Using a neonatal rat mandibular condyle culture system, the objectives of the work reported here were to determine (1) how the growth is influenced by osmotically applied mechanical loads; and (2) whether changes in intratissue osmotic pressure or pH cause metabolic changes in the cartilage which are then reflected by altered growth behavior. High molecular weight (MW) uncharged macromolecules polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and Ficoll (presumed unable to penetrate the tissue matrix) were used to examine the effect of osmotic loading on tissue growth; concentrations corresponding to osmotic pressures of up to 100 kPa resulted in a dose-dependent depression in growth and matrix accumulation. Raffinose (which can penetrate the matrix but not the cells) had no significant effect on growth for osmotic pressures of up to 87 kPa, suggesting that compression-induced changes in intratissue osmotic pressure are unlikely to provide a signal by which cells sense and respond to mechanical compression. By contrast, changes in medium pH resulted in dose-dependent changes in growth behavior. Specifically, slight alkalinity (acidity) greatly enhanced (diminished) growth and matrix accumulation; the sensitivity to pH suggests that intratissue pH could provide a mechanism for cells to sense local glycosaminoglycan concentration and mechanical compression. These data are also significant in that, while previous investigators have shown that osmotic forces and pH affect biosynthetic rates in short-term culture, the present studies indicate that resultant changes in biosynthesis lead to altered growth rates.

    Notes: Abstract Recent advances in our understanding of fatigue crack growth processes and respective crack growth modeling techniques are reviewed. Much of the observed experimental behavior (such as the effects of notches, maximum applied stress, crack length, in-plane biaxiality, out-of-plane constraint, and transient loadings) can be explained based on crack closure concepts. Both Dugdale based models and finite element techniques have been utilized. However, so far neither approach has accounted for crystallographic slip effects, grain orientation effects, or microstructural barriers. A model for crack closure with two microscopic crystallographic slip directions is used to model microscopic cracks. The model predicts variations in closure levels as the orientations of the two slip directions, with respect to the crack growth direction, are changed. In addition, a solution is proposed for the asperity micro-contact problem through a unique roughness induced closure model using a statistical description of asperity heights, asperity densities, and material flow properties.

    Notes: Abstract To study the effect of diabetes on hepatic protein synthesis and polysomal aggregation in pregnant rats, female rats were treated with streptozotocin prior to conception. Some animals were mated, and studied at day 20 of pregnancy, whereas, others were studied in parallel under non pregnant conditions. The protein synthesis rate measured with an “in vitro” cell-free system was higher in pregnant than in virgin control rats. It decreased with diabetes in both groups, although values remained higher in diabetic pregnant rats than in the virgin animals. The fetuses of diabetic rats had a lower protein synthesis rate than those from controls, although they showed a higher protein synthesis rate than either their respective mothers or virgin rats. Liver RNA concentration was higher in control and diabetic, pregnant rats than in virgin rats, and the effect of diabetes decreasing this parameter was only significant for pregnant rats. Liver RNA concentration in fetuses was lower than in their mothers, and did not differ between control and diabetic animals. The decreased protein synthesis found in diabetic animals was accompanied by disaggregation of heavy polysomes into lighter species, indicating an impairment in peptide-chain initiation.

    Description: Microvariability (intranight variability) is a low amplitude flux change at short time-scales (i.e. hours). It has been detected in unobscured type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGN) and blazars. However in type 2 AGN, the detection is hampered by the low contrast between the presumably variable nucleus and the host galaxy. In this paper, we present a search for microvariability in a sample of four type 2 quasars as an astrostatistical problem. We are exploring the use of a newly introduced enhanced F-test, proposed by Diego. The presented results show that out of four observed target, we are able to apply this statistical method to three of them. Evidence of microvariations is clear in the case of quasar J0802+2552 in all used filters ( g ', r ' and i ') during both observing nights, and they are present in one of the nights of observations, J1258+5239 in one filter ( i '), while for the J1316+4452, there is evidence for microvariability within our detection levels during one night and two filters ( r ' and i '). We demonstrate the feasibility of the enhanced F-test to detect microvariability in obscured type 2 quasars. At the end of this paper, we discuss possible causes of microvariability. One of the options is the misclassification of the targets. A likely scenario for explanation of the phenomenon involves optically thin gaps in a clumpy obscuring medium, in accordance with the present view of the circumnuclear medium. There is a possible interesting connection between the merging state of the targets and detection of microvariability.
