    Notes: Summary A monoclonal antibody IgG, has been raised against ecto-5′-nucleotidase purified from rat kidney homogenate. The specificity of the antibody was verified by immunoprecipitation. The distribution of the corresponding antigen in the rat kidney was studied by immunocytochemistry (FITC and PAP technique) in 1 μm thick cryostat sections. The antibody reacted with the brush border of proximal tubules, the apical cell membrane and the apical cytoplasm of intercalated cells in connecting tubules and collecting ducts and with interstitial cells of the cortex. Among the interstitial cells exclusively stellate shaped fibroblasts were reactive whereas rounded interstitial cells (type II interstitial cells) as well as pericytes and endothelial cells of peritubular capillaries were unreactive. Compared to the staining intensity of the fibroblasts in the cortical labyrinth the reactivity of the fibroblasts in the medullary rays of the cortex was weak or absent. Interstitial cells of the entire medulla were unreactive. Concerning the fibroblasts in the periarterial connective tissue, those surrounding the larger arteries (arcuate arteries, cortical radial arteries) were negative, those alongside afferent and efferent arterioles were positive. Endothelia of lymphatic capillaries travelling within the periarterial connective tissue were also positive. All components of the juxtaglomerular apparatus were negative. The findings are consistent with an interstitial production of adenosine, available extracellularly and thus being able to reach the major target sites of adenosine, the smooth muscles of glomerular arterioles, including the granular cells at the glomerular vascular pole.

    Notes: Abstract. We study the possibilities offered by muon storage rings for $\nu_\tau$ appearance experiments in order to determine masses and mixing angles for the $\nu_\mu \rightarrow \nu_\tau$ and $\bar\nu_e \rightarrow \bar\nu_\tau$ oscillations. The dependence of tau event rates on baseline, forward peaking of decay neutrinos with increasing energies, and average fluxes intercepted by detectors of various sizes is discussed. It is found that the baseline length does not significantly affect the rates for oscillations of such magnitudes as are suggested by the current atmospheric neutrino data. Subsequently, the effects of cuts on hadronic and wrong sign leptonic modes are computed and used to plot 90% CL contours for the parameter regions that can be explored in such experiments. The results show that even for modest muon beam energies, convincing coverage and verification of the Super Kamiokande parameters is possible. In addition, a very significant enlargement of present day bounds on the mixing parameters for neutrino oscillations of all types is guaranteed by these types of searches.

    Notes: Cationic dyeable polyester (CDPET) yarns were produced through melt blending of cationic dyeable chips having 2 mol % of sodium salt of dimethyl ester of 5-sulfoisophthalic acid (DMS salt) and normal polyester chips in different proportions to obtain yarns having varying amount of comonomer in the fiber. These different partially oriented CDPET yarns were texturized under identical conditions on a draw-texturing machine. It has been observed that with increase in the amount of salt content in the CDPET, the dye uptake increases, but the tensile and crimp properties are adversely affected. The crystalline content, crystal size, overall orientation, and heat of fusion decrease with increase in salt content in CDPET yarns. The dyeability of CDPET yarns with both disperse dyes and cationic dyes improves with increase in DMS salt content. The changes in the mechanical and dyeing properties of textured CDPET have been explained on the basis of structural studies. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: A non-destructive method for the analysis of materials using gamma ray-induced fluorescent x-ray emission has been developed. In this method, special preparation of very thin samples in which the absorption of the incident gamma rays and the emitted fluorescent x-rays is negligible, is not needed, and the absorption correction is determined experimentally. A suitable choice of the incident gamma ray energies is made to minimise enhancement effects through selective photoionization of the elements in the sample. The method is applied to the analysis of a typical sample of the soldering material using 279 keV and 59.5 keV gamma rays from 203Hg and 241Am radioactive sources respectively. The results of the analysis are found to agree well with those obtained from the chemical analysis.

    Notes: 13C NMR chemical shifts were determined for all carbons in a number of 1,7,7-trimethyl-3-[(E)-2′-arylethenyl]-2-oxabicyclo[4.4.0]deca-3,5-dienes [aryl = C6H5, C6H4CH3-p, C6H4F-p, C6H4Cl-p, C6H4Br-p, C6H4CN-p, C6H4NO2-p, C6H4OCH3-p, C6H3(OCH3)2-m, p and α-furyl]. Substituent chemical shift (Δδ13C) values for C-1, C-3, C-4, C-5, C-6, C-1′, C-2′, C-3′ and C-4′,8′ were correlated with various Hammett parameters by singleparameter analysis. The correlations revealed that the substituent effects are transmitted across three π-bonds in conjugation with the aryl ring. Dual-substituent-parameter treatment of the substituent chemical shifts revealed that resonance plays a major role in the substituent effect transmission. Hammett parameters were also derived for the α-furyl substituent.

    Notes: Carbon-13 NMR chemical shifts (CDCl3 and C6D6 solvents) and relaxation times (T1) were determined for carbons in a series of allenic esters [RR1C=C=CHCO2 Et; (1) R = R1 = H; (2) R = H, R1 = CH3; (3) R = H, R1 = CH3CH2; (4) R = R1 = CH3; (5) R = CH3, R1 = CH3CH2]. A comparison of the experimental δ13C values with those obtained by semi-empirical additivity relationships revealed the inadequacy of these relationships to explain the obtained results. A rationalization of δ13C and relaxation time data is offered, inter alia, in terms of rotameric conformational preferences of the ester function.
