    Description: The investigation of a simple and self-assembling method for realizing polymeric micro-bottle resonators is reported. By dispensing precise amounts of SU-8 onto a cleaved optical fiber, employed as mechanical support, bottle microcavities with different shapes and diameters are fabricated. The balancing of surface energy between glass fiber and polymeric microresonator with surface tension of SU-8 confers different shape to these microstructures. Planar single-mode SU-8 based waveguide, realized on polymethylmethacrylate, is chosen for exciting the micro-bottle resonators by evanescent wave. The reliability of the fabrication process and the shape of the bottle microcavities are investigated through optical analysis. We observe whispering gallery modes in these resonant microstructures by a robust coupling with single mode planar waveguides around 1.5  μ m wavelength. The resonance spectra of micro-bottle resonators and the spectral characteristics, such as Quality-factor (Q factor) and free spectral range, are evaluated for all the realized microstructures. SU-8 micro-bottle resonators show high Q-factors up to 3.8 × 10 4 and present a good mechanical stability. These features make these microcavities attractive for sensing and/or lasing applications in a planar platform.

    Notes: A procedure for fabricating all refractory superconducting tunnel junctions with a semiconducting barrier has been developed. The process is based on the deposition of a four-layer Nb–Al–CdS–Nb structure without breaking the vacuum. The photoconducting properties of the barrier produce a light-sensitive behavior of the junctions. Preliminary measurements have shown the occurrence of light induced quasiparticle tunneling. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Direct current-superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) characterized by asymmetric Josephson junctions have never been used for applications. In order to demonstrate their potential advantages, a throughout numerical analysis of different asymmetric configurations has been carried out. A damping resistance has been included in the SQUID circuit and the thermal noise associated with junction and damping resistances has been considered in the numerical model. Magnetic modulations and flux noise spectral densities have been computed as a function of many parameters (bias current, asymmetry, SQUID inductance, and damping resistance) and the performance of symmetric and asymmetric devices have been compared. The results show that, by properly optimizing the SQUID design, asymmetric SQUIDs are characterized by higher magnetic flux to voltage transfer coefficient and lower flux noise. As a result, asymmetric configurations can be very useful in all the applications where high sensitivity is required. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Fully integrated low-critical-temperature magnetometers based on asymmetric superconducting quantum interference devices have been designed, fabricated, and characterized. The large value of the flux to voltage transfer coefficient, typical of such configurations, allow a direct coupling to an external preamplifier without the need of an impedance matching flux transformer or additional positive feedback circuitry. This simplifies the read-out electronics, as required in multichannel systems for low-noise measurements. The values of the magnetic flux noise and field sensitivity, obtained so far, are 3–5 μΦ0/Hz1/2 and 6–7 fT/Hz1/2, respectively. These results are already suitable for biomagnetic applications and can be further improved by properly optimizing the device parameters. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Direct current superconducting quantum interference devices made by Josephson junctions with asymmetric shunt resistances have been numerically investigated in the low temperature regime. When combined with a damping resistance, the asymmetry leads to a flux to voltage transfer coefficient several times larger than the one typical of symmetric devices, together with a lower magnetic flux noise. These results show that this type of asymmetric device may replace the standard ones in a large number of magnetometric applications, improving the sensitivity performance. The large transfer coefficient may also simplify the readout electronics allowing a direct coupling of asymmetric devices to an external preamplifier, without the need of an impedance matching flux transformer. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) have been fabricated using YBa2Cu3O7−x [100] 45°-tilt grain-boundary Josephson junctions based on a controllable biepitaxial technique. These devices are characterized by large characteristic voltages, desirable magnetic-flux-to-voltage transfer parameters and low flux noise. An energy resolution of 1.6×10−30 J/Hz at liquid helium has been measured, which is the lowest value reported for biepitaxial SQUIDs. These junctions exhibit a phenomenology different from traditional [001] 45°-tilt biepitaxials probably due to the absence of π junctions. The performance of the presented SQUIDs demonstrates that significant improvements in the biepitaxial technique are possible, and the resulting devices have potential for applications. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
