    Description: Like many metropolitan regions Chicago area characterized by Urban Sprawl. The ability to manage this Urban Sprawl for a sustainable future presents numerous challenges for geographers and planners. Nowadays remotely sensed data are inherently suited to provide information on urban land cover (LC) characteristics, change over time, and modeling. This paper has attempted to investigate Urban Sprawl in northeastern Illinois, and analyze its impact on the agricultural land and nature over time. The satellite images were acquired and classified to prepare the base maps, change detection was employed to analyze changes overtime. The Land Change modeler was used to predict the future urban growth of the area in 2020 and 2030. The results indicated that between (1989 and 2010) the built up area increased by 82.2%, which associated with a loss of 25.8% of the valuable agricultural lands and a decline in the urban open spaces and other landscape categories by 32.5%. The predicted maps showed an increase of built up land, which will cause further loss of agricultural lands mainly in the suburbs.

    Description: The city of Chicago has experiences of Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomena and a good example is its widely reported heat wave of 1995. This study conducted an ecological evaluation of Chicago’s UHI phenomena using LANDSAT TM of 2010, almost 15 years after the lethal heat wave and subsequently implemented various UHI mitigation efforts. The thermal characteristics of the city were assessed with a Land Surface Temperature (LST), a parameter retrieved from LANDSAT TM 6; a thermal-infrared (TIR) band (10.40 to 12.50μm), using mono-window algorithm. The ecological evaluation was made using an Urban Thermal Field Variance Index (UTFVI), which quantitatively evaluated the UHI effects on the quality of urban life. The accuracy of the model was assessed against theoretical relationships between the LST, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI). The LST of Chicago ranges from 18 o C in Urban Cool Islands (UCI) to 44 o C in UHI. In Chicago, although the cooling effects of Lake Michigan, downtown’s sky-high buildings, and urban parks and green spaces have worked together to suppress the concerns of UHI effects locally, still some areas experience a high UHI. In general, 25% of the city experiences ecologically bad or worse UHI effects, indicating a need for continued UHI mitigation efforts.

    Description: In this paper we study the dynamic and rheologic control of hanging wall accommodation in ramp-flat thrust models. In particular we vary the dimensionless ratio of shear strength to gravity stress to model hanging wall accommodation styles in different materials. In all models we require that the flat-ramp-flat footwall provides a surface of low frictional resistance. In viscous materials hanging wall accommodation progresses by wedge flow. In Bingham materials, wedge flow is also the preferred mode in cases where the gravity stress exceeds the yield limit of materials. Such models simulate the flow of salt or snow glaciers above ramp obstructions. At high ratios of shear strength to gravity stress the hanging wall blocks translate forward without bending and unbending to the form of the rigid footwall. In elastic-plastic strain-hardening materials ramp-flat accommodation progresses by fault-bend folding in case there is a near balance between the yield stress and gravity stress. In frictional materials hanging wall accommodation progresses by shear or kink-band nucleation above fault-bends. The shear or kink-bands which initially nucleate at the lower fault-bend change shape and reactivate by normal faulting or tensile failure at the upper fault-bend, depending on the ratio of shear strength to gravity stress. In nature, hanging wall accommodation by thrust nucleation above ramps and their subsequent reactivation may be anticipated in frictional sediments at upper crustal levels, where temperatures and pressures are low.
