Notes: Eighty-six isolates of Erwinia salicis, the causal agent of watermark disease of willow, were obtained from culture collections and collected from various willow plantations in south-east England. These isolates were characterized by their reaction in a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, by enzyme electrophoresis, and for lysis by a panel of five bacteriophage. Eighty-one isolates had similar characteristics and clustered at a level of similarity of at least 60%. Five isolates were found to have less than 20% similarity to the other E. salicis. Antiserum raised against E. salicis (NCPPB 2535) was found to be specific to E. salicis and did not cross-react with other bacteria tested. No geographical clustering of electrotypes was found: however, Dutch and English isolates could be distinguished by bacteriophage typing. The local distribution of electrotypes collected from diseased trees suggests that the bacterium is spread via the propagating material and that tree to tree spread is rare.

Notes: Abstract 1-[N-(4-bromophenyl)]aminomethylidene-2(1H)naphthalenone (C17H12NOBr) (1) was synthesized and its crystal structure was determined. Compound (1) is monoclinic, space group P21/n with a = 4.808(1) Å, b = 20.617(1) Å, c = 13.750(1) Å, β = 93.004(1)°, V = 1361.11(3) Å3, Z = 4, Dc = 1.592 g·cm−3, μ(Mo Kα) = 3.014 mm−1, R = 0.051 for 1013 reflections [I 〉 2σ(I)]. There is a strong intramolecular hydrogen bond of distance 2.544(2) Å between the hydroxyl oxygen atom and imine nitrogen atom, the hydrogen atom essentially being bonded to the nitrogen atom. The title molecule is not planar. X-ray crystal structure determination reveals the existence of the keto (or predominantly keto) tautomer in (1). Spectra of compound (1) were observed by IR and NMR, and UV–visible spectra of (1) were studied in different solvents and acidic media.

Notes: Abstract Concentration of As, Cr, Fe, Zn, Co, Sb, Pb, Cd and Cu weredetermined in sediment and algae samples collected from theBosphorus in Turkey. Certain algae species were chosen among thegreen, brown and red algae species at three sampling stations.Element analyses were carried out by atomic absorptionspectrophotometry and instrumental neutron activation analysis. The locations having the highest metal concentrations insediments were as follows: As at Poyraz; Cr, Zn, Sb at RumeliFeneri and Fe, Co at Garipçe. In genral, the accumulation ofmost of the metals showed no direct correlation with algaespecies. On the other hand, C. verticillatus and C. barbataspecies of brown algae showed ability to accumulate arsenic.

Notes: Abstract Cesium-137 concentrations in red, brown and green algae have been studied for the calculation of natural depuration rates. The algae species were collected from the same population of the Black Sea stations during the period of 1986–1995. The natural depuration rates are estimated as biological half-lives. The pattern of depuration results represented by a single component for each algae division. The biological half-lives of137Cs in red (Phyllophora nervosa), green (Chaetomorpha linum) and brown (Cystoceira barbata) algae are estimated to be 18.5, 21.6 and 29.3 months, respectively.137Cs and40K activity levels and their ratios in algae species in two stations in Black Sea region of Turkey have been determined during the period of 1990–1995. The results showed that the Sinop region was more contaminated than the Şile region on the Black Sea coast of Turkey from the Chernobyl accident.

Notes: Abstract The retention of137Cs in algal polysaccharides has been studied. Alginic acid showed higher retention value than the tested alginate samples. The retention of137Cs in carrageen types and agar was first investigated. The binding capacities were found to be equal for carrageenan types and agar.

Notes: Summary Substances obtained from specimens ofSargassum vulgare Ag. (leaves and air-blisters), andPolysiphonia subulifera (C. Agardh)Harvey collected from Turkish coasts were tested for their antilipemic properties. It was found that intravenous or intraperitoneal administration of these substances markedly increased serum lipolytic activity of rats. Perfusion of isolated rat heart or epididymal fat pad with the same substances at the concentration as low as 1 µg/ml induces a significant lipase activity in the perfusion medium.

Notes: Abstract Radiocesium (134Cs and137Cs) activity levels in mosses from the Black Sea area, northern Turkey, are reported following the Chernobyl accident during the period of 1989–1991. The cesium radionuclides were detected and measured in all the samples but other longlived radionuclides such as144Ce and106Ru were measured in only one sample. The present data support the fact that radioactivity monitoring in mosses can be useful to determine the lasting effect of radioactive contamination.
