Notes: Abstract  Experimental trawl surveys were performed in the Gulf of Lions. A multicompartmental approach was used to study the spatial distribution of demersal assemblages and to estimate their associations with two other components of the ecosystem: the benthic macrofauna and substratum type. At the Gulf scale, we found that these components explained 38 and 19% of the total variability of the spatial organization of groundfishes, respectively. Our results showed that groundfish and benthic macrofauna species were primarily distributed along a coast–open sea gradient and secondarily along a longitudinal axis. The longitudinal variability of the spatial organisation of species was maximal in the shelf area, whereas the upper-slope and coastal areas were characterized by strong homogeneity. Although no partitioning could be made based on their spatial distribution, the coastal groundfish assemblages were split into two groups. In the first group, groundfishes were strongly associated with both benthic macrofauna and type of substratum; in the second group, they were strongly independent of these two components. Furthermore, in the Gulf of Lions, the presence of productive zones associated with the Rhône river plume or with shelf-break upwelling seemed to attract some groundfishes. This study illustrates how useful such a multicompartmental approach can be for both fisheries management and community ecology.

Notes: Abstract The objective of this paper is a mathematically rigorous investigation of intermittency and related questions intensively studied in different areas of physics, in particular in hydrodynamics. On a qualitative level, intermittent random fields are distinguished by the appearance of sparsely distributed sharp “peaks” which give the main contribution to the formation of the statistical moments. The paper deals with the Cauchy problem (∂/∂t)u(t,x)=Hu(t, x), u(0,x)=t 0(x) ≥ 0, (t, x) ∈ ℝ+ × ℤ d , for the Anderson HamiltonianH = κΔ + ξ(·), ξ(x),x ∈ ℤd where is a (generally unbounded) spatially homogeneous random potential. This first part is devoted to some basic problems. Using percolation arguments, a complete answer to the question of existence and uniqueness for the Cauchy problem in the class of all nonnegative solutions is given in the case of i.i.d. random variables. Necessary and sufficient conditions for intermittency of the fieldsu(t,·) ast→∞ are found in spectral terms ofH. Rough asymptotic formulas for the statistical moments and the almost sure behavior ofu(t,x) ast→∞ are also derived.

Notes: Summary Let (ξ N ) be a sequence of random variables with values in a topological space which satisfy the large deviation principle. For eachM and eachN, let Ξ M, N denote the empirical measure associated withM independent copies of ξ N . As a main result, we show that (Ξ M, N ) also satisfies the large deviation principle asM,N→∞. We derive several representations of the associated rate function. These results are then applied to empirical measure processes Ξ M, N (t) =M −1 Σ i=1 N δξ i N (t) 0≦t≦T, where (ξ 1 N ,..., ξ M N (t)) is a system of weakly interacting diffusions with noise intensity 1/N. This is a continuation of our previous work on the McKean-Vlasov limit and related hierarchical models ([4], [5]).

Notes: Abstract. We consider the parabolic Anderson problem ∂ t u = κΔu + ξ(x)u on ℝ+×ℝ d with initial condition u(0,x) = 1. Here κ 〉 0 is a diffusion constant and ξ is a random homogeneous potential. We concentrate on the two important cases of a Gaussian potential and a shot noise Poisson potential. Under some mild regularity assumptions, we derive the second-order term of the almost sure asymptotics of u(t, 0) as t→∞.

Notes: Summary. This is a continuation of our previous work [6] on the investigation of intermittency for the parabolic equation (∂/∂t)u=Hu on ℝ+×ℤ d associated with the Anderson Hamiltonian H=κΔ+ξ(·) for i.i.d. random potentials ξ(·). For the Cauchy problem with nonnegative homogeneous initial condition we study the second order asymptotics of the statistical moments 〈u(t,0) p 〉 and the almost sure growth of u(t,0) as t→∞. We point out the crucial role of double exponential tails of ξ(0) for the formation of high intermittent peaks of the solution u(t,·) with asymptotically finite size. The challenging motivation is to achieve a better understanding of the geometric structure of such high exceedances which in one or another sense provide the essential contribution to the solution.

Notes: Abstract. Consider the Cauchy problem ∂u(x, t)/∂t = ℋu(x, t) (x∈ℤd, t≥ 0) with initial condition u(x, 0) ≡ 1 and with ℋ the Anderson Hamiltonian ℋ = κΔ + ξ. Here Δ is the discrete Laplacian, κ∈ (0, ∞) is a diffusion constant, and ξ = {ξ(x): x∈ℤ d } is an i.i.d.random field taking values in ℝ. Gärtner and Molchanov (1990) have shown that if the law of ξ(0) is nondegenerate, then the solution u is asymptotically intermittent. In the present paper we study the structure of the intermittent peaks for the special case where the law of ξ(0) is (in the vicinity of) the double exponential Prob(ξ(0) 〉 s) = exp[−e s /θ] (s∈ℝ). Here θ∈ (0, ∞) is a parameter that can be thought of as measuring the degree of disorder in the ξ-field. Our main result is that, for fixed x, y∈ℤ d and t→∈, the correlation coefficient of u(x, t) and u(y, t) converges to ∥w ρ∥−2 ℓ2Σz ∈ℤd w ρ(x+z)w ρ(y+z). In this expression, ρ = θ/κ while w ρ:ℤd→ℝ+ is given by w ρ = (v ρ)⊗ d with v ρ: ℤ→ℝ+ the unique centered ground state (i.e., the solution in ℓ2(ℤ) with minimal l 2-norm) of the 1-dimensional nonlinear equation Δv + 2ρv log v = 0. The uniqueness of the ground state is actually proved only for large ρ, but is conjectured to hold for any ρ∈ (0, ∞). empty It turns out that if the right tail of the law of ξ(0) is thicker (or thinner) than the double exponential, then the correlation coefficient of u(x, t) and u(y, t) converges to δ x, y (resp.the constant function 1). Thus, the double exponential family is the critical class exhibiting a nondegenerate correlation structure.

Notes: Summary The following electron microscopical findings in the vitreous body of 16-day-old rat embryos and in the vitreoretinal border layer on both sides of the ora serrata in a 3-year-old child are reported: The vitreous body of the rat embryo and the vitreoretinal border layer of the infant eye contain fibroblasts. These fibroblasts do not differ from those present in connective tissue. The embryonic vitreous body of the rat contains fibre-forming cells, which show an alveolar structure of the cytoplasm. The fibroblasts in the cortical tissue layer of the vitreous body form the fibrils of the stroma of the vitreous body and the zonula fibres. These fibrils show a marked cross striation. The striation is either irregular or shows periodicity. In the vitreous body of the rat embryo and of the infant eye the lenght of these periods has been measured with 120 and 210 A. Periods of 90–120, 400, 440 and 630 A could be shown in the fibrillar bundles of a zonula fibre of the infant eye. In the region of the pars plana corporis ciliaris the fibroblasts of the cortical tissue layer of the vitreous body of the infant eye are also found deep down in the sinus and folds of the ciliary epithelium. Thus they guarantee an as large as possible area for the attachment of the fibrils of the zonula fibres which they produce. The pars plana corporis ciliaris of the infant eye is covered with a dense network of fibroblast processes. Also cells of the macrophage type may be found in this region. Our electron microscopical findings confirm those of earlier light microscopists and lately by Balazs. The vitreous body of the eye is formed by mesenchymal tissue, whereas the zonula fibres are formed by connective tissue.

Notes: Summary The normal zonular fibrils of the human eye do not differ from the fibrils of the zonula Zinnii of the rat. Furthermore, there is no difference between the single zonular fibrils and the fibrils of the vitreous body in rat and man. The average diameter of the human zonular fibrils is 109 Å. They are transversely striated at intervals with a periodicity of 70–150 Å. Over periods of mostly 400–440 å, but also of 500–640 Å were observed. At a few places over periods similar to those of the long spacing-type packing were found. Like in the rat eye, the zonular fibrils of the human eye must be regarded as a special form of collagen. An indirect proof for the collageneous nature of the zonular fibrils is the occurence in advanced age of degenerative alterations which are exclusively observed in connective tissue (hyalinization, elastoid degeneration).
