    Notes: Abstract The future establishment of large telescopes at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos (ORM) has raised the necessity of designing a site-testing campaign, aimed specifically at selecting their emplacements, as well as characterizing correctly the local seeing behaviour and the fluctuations of the turbulent field in the area covered by the observatory. This paper describes the site evaluation programme to be carried out at the ORM during the next four years. The data obtained in this program will improve earlier tests in the critical areas of sub-are sec seeing, the size of the isoplanatic patch, the ‘efecto Caldera’ and suitability for infrared astronomy, among others.

    Notes: Abstract The Canarian Observatories have become two of the most studies ones and are a privilleged place for astronomical observations. Since the sixties when, for the first time, Prof. Sánchez installed equipments to test the atmosphere at Observatorio del Teide (O.T., Tenerife), the campaigns carried out not only at Izaña but also at Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (O.R.M., La Palma), have been numerous. In this contribution we review some results mainly concerning the atmospheric image quality and infrared properties. These results have been complemented with information from work already published. The suitability of the Canary Observatories for Astronomy has encouraged us to carry on a modern campaign of site testing, bearing in mind the future large telescopes that are being planned. The description of this campaign, which is now starting, is presented in the next contribution.

    Notes: Based on polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, density-gradient ultracentrifugation and thermal inactivation, there is only one major molecular species of each of the following larval enzymes (soluble in water or solubilized in Triton X-100): membrane-bound aminopeptidase (pH optimum 8.5; Km 0.21 mM L-leucine p-nitroanilide; Mr 322,000), amylase (pH optimum 6.5; Km 0.14% starch; Mr 66,000), lysozyme (pH optimum 3.5; Km 0.3 mg/ml; Mr 24,000); and membrane-bound trehalase (pH optimum 5.0; Km 1.09 mM trehalose; Mr 94,000). Except for lysozyme, the properties of adult digestive enzymes are different from those described for larval enzymes. Larval aminopeptidase and trehalase were purified by electrophoresis and larval lysozyme (contaminated with amylase) by density-gradient ultracentrifugation, and were used to raise antibodies in a rabbit.Antibodies raised against larval aminopeptidase, trehalase, and amylase did not recognize the imaginal enzymes, whereas those against larval lysozyme recognize imaginal lysozyme. The data suggest that the genes coding for digestive enzymes (except for lysozyme) are different in larvae and imagoes.

    Description: Geochronologic, provenance, and sediment accumulation records from the long-lived (〉100 m.y.) retroarc basin at the transition from the central to southern Andes provide improved resolution to examine the duration and controls on mixed-mode deformation and an enigmatic foreland depositional hiatus. Detrital zircon U-Pb ages for the Malargüe and Neuquén basin systems of western Argentina reveal shifts in exhumation and accumulation compatible with magmatic-arc and thrust-belt sources during unsteady Cretaceous–Neogene deformation. Fully developed foreland basin conditions were only achieved during separate periods of Late Cretaceous and Neogene shortening contemporaneous with possible episodes of enhanced coupling between a westward-advancing South American plate and the subducting Nazca slab. Separating these two contractional episodes is a 20–40 m.y. phase of reduced sedimentation and unconformity development, potentially signifying a neutral to extensional mode across the retroarc hinterland to forearc region during diminished plate coupling. We propose that the Andean orogen and its foreland and forearc basins have always been sensitive to variations in subduction dynamics, such that regional shifts in slab buoyancy and subduction geometry (particularly slab dip) superimposed on plate-scale shifts in convergence have governed mechanical coupling along the plate boundary and resulting fluctuations among contractional, extensional, and neutral tectonic regimes.

    Description: Supposed or potential Devonian igneous rocks in the accretionary complex of southern Chile were investigated using sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe U–Pb dating of zircon, with Hf- and O-isotope analyses of selected grains. Ages of 384 ± 3 and 382 ± 2 Ma are confirmed for two igneous bodies (another having been previously dated at 397 ± 1 Ma). Detrital zircon ages in the host rocks, some associated with Devonian marine fossils, indicate maximum possible sedimentation ages of c . 330 – 385 Ma. Devonian ages of 391 ± 10 and 374 ± 3 Ma for plutonic rocks at the western edge of the North Patagonian Massif are somewhat older than those of orthogneisses in the western flank of the Andes near Chaitén (361 ± 7 and 364 ± 2 Ma). O and Hf isotopes indicate that the Devonian intrusions in the accretionary complex crystallized from mantle-derived magmas, whereas those in the North Patagonian Massif show a strong crustal influence, corresponding to oceanic and continental margin subduction environments of magma genesis, respectively. Devonian zircon provenance in the accretionary complex was from the North Patagonian Massif and not from the mantle-derived intrusions, suggesting that the accretionary complex formed an integral part of the Gondwana margin during Devonian–Carboniferous times.     Description: The Cordilleran thrust belt of northwestern Montana (United States) has received much less attention than its counterparts in the western interior of USA and Canada. The structure of the thrust belt in this region is well preserved and has not been strongly overprinted by Cenozoic extension, providing an opportunity to reconstruct its geometry and to relate it to the foreland basin system. The thrust belt in this region consists of a frontal part of highly deformed Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Paleocene sedimentary rocks, and a western region dominated by a 〉15-km-thick succession of Proterozoic Belt Supergroup strata underlain by faults of the Lewis thrust system. The frontal part can be subdivided into the foothills and the Sawtooth Range. At the surface, the foothills show deformed Mesozoic and Paleocene rocks; at depth, reflection seismic data indicate numerous thrust faults carrying Paleozoic strata. The Sawtooth Range, south from the Lewis thrust salient, is defined by steeply dipping imbricate thrusts that detach at the basal Cambrian stratigraphic level. The Sawtooth Range plunges northward beneath the Lewis thrust salient and diverges into a pair of independent thrust systems that form the Flathead and Waterton duplexes in Canada. The relatively minor internal deformation in the western part of the thrust belt resulted from the great rheological strength of the Belt Supergroup rocks and initial high taper of the preorogenic stratigraphic wedge. A new ~145-km-long balanced cross section indicates ~135 km of shortening, a value similar to that in the southern part of the Canadian thrust belt. Previous work and new conventional and isotopic provenance data from the foreland basin and U-Pb ages from crosscutting intrusive rocks establish a preliminary kinematic model for this segment of the Cordilleran thrust belt. The emerging pattern is a relatively simple forelandward progression of thrusting events. Most shortening in the Lewis thrust system, Sawtooth Range, and foothills occurred roughly between mid-Campanian and Early Eocene time (ca. 75–52 Ma), yielding a shortening rate of ~5.9 mm/yr. This pattern differs from the pattern of shortening in the better known Sevier thrust belt to the south, where regional far-traveled Proterozoic quartzite-bearing thrust sheets were mainly active during Early Cretaceous time. From Middle Eocene to Early Miocene time, this sector of the Cordillera collapsed, generating a number of extensional depocenters.

    Description: 〈span〉〈div〉Abstract〈/div〉The scarce Eocene geological record in the Andean region of central Chile (∼33.5°S) is represented by the Estratos del Cordón de los Ratones (ECLR) unit. This is a 〈span〉∼〈/span〉450 m thick mainly volcanic continental series, with a bimodal character, that hosts numerous subvolcanic intrusions. The igneous products show compositional features indicating a cogenetic character for the whole suite, relatively juvenile mantle signatures and arc-like affinities. This along with age determinations of 〈span〉∼〈/span〉42 Ma indicate that the unit corresponds to the middle Eocene arc in the region. Geochemical data obtained complement the evolving arc magmatic record throughout Andean evolution. This allows us to track: (i) the earliest Late Cretaceous orogenic event, (ii) neutral tectonic conditions from latest Cretaceous until middle Eocene times, (iii) the Oligocene-early Miocene extensional episode, and (iv) the onset of prevailing compression. The record also indicates that the extensional event started no earlier than the middle Eocene, with the deposition of the ECLR, and no later than earliest Oligocene.
