Stereochemical and 13C NMR Spectroscopical Investigations, XXI. Conformational Changes by Reflex Effects in 2,2-Dimethyl-and 2,2,6,6-TetramethylcyclohexanesFunctional derivatives of the title compounds are prepared by substitution reactions; the tetramethyl system is particularly complicated by rearrangements. In spite of twofold gauche interactions with the vicinal methyl groups, an additional destabilization of the conformation bearing axial substituents X in comparison to monosubstituted cyclohexanes is observed by low temperature 13C NMR spectroscopy. This effect originates in the buttressing of the equatorial methyl group, which is pushed towards the axial substituent X by the reflex effect of the axial methyl group. Application of a molecular mechanic force field substantiates this effect and correctly predicts the experimental conformational equilibria. In the analysis of the 13C NMR shifts it is possible to rationalize the reduction of the X substituent effect on the quarternary Cβ atom by calculation of linear electric field effects. The deshielding observed for the axial methyl group cannot originate in the calculated Grant-Cheney forces, but eventually in H—C—H bond angle distortions.
Notes:
