Notes: Abstract The thermodynamics of the Na-Al (99.5%) system has been investigated over a range of temperatures. Measurements were made using Nasicon (Na3Zr2Si2PO12) and sodiumβ-alumina with Nao.75Co02 as the reference material. Near to the melting point there is a strong dependence of the activity coefficient on the sodium concentration whereas, at higher temperatures, Henry's Law is obeyed and the activity coefficient agrees with other determinations.

Notes: Abstract In order to be able to select the optimum composition of an electrolyte in the ZnCl2−NaCl−KCl system, the conductivity, surface tension and density were measured for a series of melts in the composition range 28–50 mol % ZnCl2, 0–62 mol% KCl and 0–62 mol % NaCl. It was found that the results could be correlated with the phase diagram and that the difference between the temperature of measurement and the liquidus or glass transition point was an important parameter in defining the properties. The optimum composition was found to be 40 mol % ZnCl2, 30 mol % KCl and 30 mol % NaCl.

Notes: Abstract The conductivity of aqueous zinc chloride reaches a maximum of 10.7 Ω−1 m−1 at 3.7 M ZnCl2. Measurements on chlorinated ZnCl2 showed that at low chlorine concentrations, the conductivity increased linearly with the square root of the chlorine concentration. The increase was due to the three species: dissolved chlorine, Cl 3 − and HClO. Ammonium chloride additions increased the conductivity of aqueous zinc chloride substantially.

Notes: Abstract There are advantages if zinc can be deposited electrochemically at high current densities. In order to improve the deposit at current densities exceeding 2000 Am−2, various additions were made to the electrolyte. It was found that proteinous additives produced planar deposits with a (10.2) (10.3) orientation and a current efficiency of around 85% in a small laboratory cell.

Notes: Abstract Cyclic voltammetry, in conjunction with the chromatographic analysis of the anode product, has been used to elucidate the reactions occurring during the electrolysis of lithium carbonate-lithium chloride melts. At a carbonate ion concentration of 0.033 mole fraction the peak anodic current densities were 3100 A m−2 on vitreous carbon and 6900 A m−2 on graphite with the product being carbon dioxide. The cathodic reduction of carbonate at low concentrations was found to occur at −1.0 V to −1.2 V vs a Ag/Ag(I) reference electrode which is 1.2 V less negative than the potential at which lithium ions were reduced. Voltammetric studies of the reduction of the carbonate ion indicated that the reaction mechanism involved an irreversible charge transfer.

Notes: Abstract The nitrogen-sensing properties of LaAl12O18N are described for the first time. Positive e.m.f. measurements at high temperature across the cells α-Nb (N), β-Nb2N, α-Al2O3, LaAl12O18N∣LaAl11O18 (or LaAl12O18N)∣LaAl12O18N, α-Al2O3, β-Nb2N, γ-Nb4N3, were in agreement with PN2(β-Nb2N, γ-Nb4N3)〉PN2(α-Nb(N), β-Nb2N) for the idealized stoichiometric cell reaction γ-Nb4N3+2α-Nb(N)→3β-Nb2N, thus demonstrating the nitrogen-sensing property of these cells. The e.m.f. for a variety of cells with electrodes containing β-V2N, β-Nb2N, β-Ta2N and “Ti2N”, were consistent with the predicted equilibrium nitrogen partial pressures.

Notes: Abstract Electrochemically pre-textured samples have been subjected to melt-processing in order to produce dense and highly textured bulk samples of YBa2Cu3O7−y (YBCO). Full oxygenation of these samples has been achieved at high processing temperatures of 720 °C by electrochemical titration, in order to increase the superconducting transition temperature to 〉 89 K. These samples show a large magnetic hysteresis, and the value of J c calculated using the Bean model is in the range 4000–6000 A cm−2 at 77 K and 1 tesla magnetic field, and is independent of the applied field in that range. In another variation of the melt-processing technique — referred to as “isothermal melt-textured growth” — highly textured samples have been produced by the movement of the solidification front at a constant temperature in an oxygen activity gradient.

Notes: Abstract Lithium ion-conducting solid electrolytes Li3AlN2 and Li2SiN2 were investigated as possible electrolytes for nitrogen sensors. The nitride ceramics were synthesized and characterized by SEM, X-ray diffraction and a.c. impedance. Thermodynamic measurements were carried out by measuring cell electromotive forces (e.m.f.s) consisting of solid electrolyte tubes sandwiched between Cr/Cr2N and CrN/Cr2N references. The results corresponded to the values given in the literature for this system.
