Notes: Since it is necessary to give up real resources, goods and services to provide for the demands of tourists, the net benefits to an economy from tourism growth are typically substantially lower than gross tourism expenditure. Recognizing this, tourism researchers are paying increased attention to the concept of yield so as to inform benefit cost analysis, government policy, marketing strategies and investment decisions in the context of tourism development. First, defines the concept of yield and discusses some problems in its measurement; identifies distortions to the competitive tourism market and the implications for tourism yield; and also explores the relationship between yield and tourism expenditure as an indicator of yield. Concludes that the yield from tourism goes beyond visitor expenditure and should take account of a wide range of economic, environmental and social costs and benefits of tourism development.

Notes: Air transport in the Asian–Pacific region is growing faster than anywhere else. Asian airlines (other than Japanese) are the lowest cost operators in the world. But like all airlines, they operate in a tightly regulated framework. Some 2000 bilateral air service agreements among 160 countries specify which airline flies on a route, what capacity it offers and how much capacity third–country airlines are allowed. The regulatory system is now coming under various pressures: from the growth of a tourist industry demanding lower fares, from increased competition with the emergence of a new generation of low–cost airlines, and from the US ‘mega carriers’ and their alliances. The airlines of the region have the opportunity to benefit from these changes in the regulatory environment. But this will require a more trade–oriented approach to aviation than some countries of the region now have.A number of guiding principles for civil aviation policy in the 1990s suggest themselves〈list style="custom"〉•More liberal arrangements for the allocation of traffic rights would benefit the regional economies•Such liberalization is possible within the current bilateral system, but faster progress would be achieved through regional negotiations•Such regional negotiations are likely to make greater progress if conducted jointly with other trade issues•There remains a role for GATS (General Agreement on Trade in Services) type arrangements, especially in relation to so–called ‘soft rights’, and in laying down ground rules for regional negotiations.

Notes: Tourism has been growing rapidly in the Asian-Pacific region, outward tourism propelled by rising incomes and inward tourism by falling airfares. This article draws on recent literature to describe the development of the tourist industry in the region and government policies concerning tourism. It discusses some of the industry's problems, such as environmental effects, shortage of appropriate skills and changes in competitiveness, especially for Japan and Singapore.

Notes: Summary Background. We conducted a phase II study to determine the response to, and toxicity of, docetaxel (Taxotere; Rhône Poulenc Rorer Pharmaceuticals, Inc) in patients with recurrent malignant glioma. Patients and methods. Eighteen patients with recurrent malignant glioma were treated with 100 mg/m2 (no prior chemotherapy) or 75 mg/m2 (prior adjuvant chemotherapy) of docetaxel intravenously over 1 hour, every 3 weeks. Premedication with dexamethasone, diphenhydramine and ranitidine or cimetidine was given to all patients. Five (28%) had gioblastoma multiforme (GBM) and the rest other malignant gliomas. Eleven (61%) had an ECOG performance status of 0 or 1, and 13 (72%) were on corticosteroids at the start of treatment. Rigorous response criteria were used. All were eligible and évaluable for response. Results. No complete or partial responses were observed; the objective response rate was 0% (95% confidence interval: 0–15.3%). Patients received a median of 2 cycles (range, 1–6). Grade 3 or 4 neutropenia occurred in 17 (94%) patients and was associated with fever that required intravenous antibiotics in 4 (22%) patients. An additional patient received intravenous antibiotics for an infection not associated with neutropenia. Six (33%) patients had mild hypersensitivity reactions. Onychodystrophy, peripheral edema and peripheral neuropathy were uncommon and mild. Conclusions. Docetaxel has no significant activity in patients with recurrent malignant glioma.

Notes: In this study, the discretized finite volume form of the two-dimensional, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is solved using both a frozen coefficient and a full Newton non-linear iteration. The optimal method is a combination of these two techniques. The linearized equations are solved using a conjugate-gradient-like method (CGSTAB). Various types of preconditioning are developed. Completely general sparse matrix methods are used. Investigations are carried out to determine the effect of finite volume cell anisotropy on the preconditioner. Numerical results are given for several test problems.

Notes: In this paper, numerical methods for solving the transonic full potential equation are developed. The governing equation is discretized by a flux-biasing finite volume method. The resulting non-linear algebraic system is solved by using a continuation method with full Newton iteration. The continuation method is based on solving a highly ‘upstream-weighted’ discretization and then gradually reducing the upstream weighting. A general PCG-like sparse matrix iterative solver is used to solve the Jacobians at each non-linear step. Various types of incomplete LU (ILU) preconditioners and ordering techniques are compared. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate that these methods are efficient and robust for solving the transonic potential equation in the workstation computing environment. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
