    Notes: Herbage intake is usually depressed when beef cattle grazing abundant pastures are supplemented with energy-rich feedstuffs but relatively little is known about the effects of supplementation on the components of ingestive behaviour. An experiment was conducted to establish the effect of ground corn (Zea mays L.) on the ingestive behaviour of yearling Angus and Angus × Hereford steers (Bos taurus) (mean live weight (LW) of 323 kg) grazing autumn stockpiled Boone cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.) using a tethered grazing system in which the experimental unit was the tethered steer and its grazing area (45 m2) for one grazing session. Herbage dry matter (DM) mass was 1662 kg ha−1 and herbage DM allowance was 7–5 kg steer−1 for each grazing session. Herbage DM intake was measured as the difference between herbage DM mass offered and refused. Grazing took place during two daily sessions each of about 2 h duration commencing at 08.00 and 14.00 h for 9 days. Ground corn (0, 1·5, 3·0 and 4·5 kg steer−1) was fed each day at 12.00 h and had no significant (P 〈 0·05) effect on rate of DM intake, rate of biting or DM intake per bite. Mean DM intake was 6 2 kg steer−1 d−1 (87 mg (kg LW)−1 min−1). Steers averaged 4832 bites per grazing session, with a mean DM intake per bite of 644 mg (2·0 mg (kg LW)−1) and a mean rate of 44 bites min−1. Data obtained at the beginning and end of each grazing period on ingestive behaviour of one group of four steers (mean LW of 306 kg) fitted with oesophageal fistulae supported data for the two groups of normal steers and showed no response to supplementation. Mean values for rate of DM intake, DM intake per bite and rate of biting established for the fistulated cattle were 73 mg (kg LW)−1 min−1, 521 mg bite−1 (1·7 mg (kg LW)−1) and 39 bites min−1, respectively.

    Notes: A series of comparisons was made of the bite rates of fistulated and non-fistulated cattle and sheep, grazing four grassy hill plant communities over four years. Both bite rates and grazing times were recorded on two occasions. Comparative observations were also made on faecal cuticle concentrations on one grassy and one dwarf shrub community and on faecal ash, nitrogen (N) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) concentrations throughout one year.Faecal N concentrations were slightly but consistently higher in fistulates than in non-fistulates, but faecal ADF and ash concentrations and the relative proportions of faecal cuticle fragments were similar and did not indicate differences in either diet composition or digestive efficiency. Bite rates did not differ significantly between fistulates and non-fistulates, except on the two occasions when fistulates carried Vibracorders to measure grazing time without preliminary training, and grazing times did not differ significantly. There were significant differences between cattle and sheep in most variables.On the basis of this evidence, there is no reason to expect that fistulated and non-fistulated animals of similar history and nutritional background will differ in grazing behaviour or diet composition.

    Notes: An experiment is described in which steers and wether sheep separately grazed perennial ryegrass swards, managed so that half of each sward had previously been grazed by sheep and half by cattle. The influence of the presence of dung from the same or the other species on grazing patterns and herbage utilization was examined.Regression analysis of extended sward height along transects laid across dung pats after grazing revealed that the limits of the rejected herbage were more clearly defined around cattle dung than sheep dung when grazed by cattle, whereas there was less distinct avoidance of herbage around both cattle and sheep dung when grazed by sheep. As grazing proceeded there was a progressive movement of animals from the half of the plot previously grazed by the same species to the half previously grazed by the opposite species, and this movement was more marked in the cattle than in the sheep.It was concluded that under mixed grazing a greater proportion of the herbage would be available to the sheep giving them an advantage over the cattle.

    Notes: Separate groups of non-lactating cows and wether sheep grazed at similar herbage allowances for two successive 5-d periods on swards that had previously been grazed frequently or infrequently with the intention of creating differences in canopy structure. Measurements were made of sward structure and composition, ingestive behaviour and diet composition. The preliminary treatments had little effect upon either sward conditions or animal behaviour.Herbage mass was reduced from 4020 kg dry matter (DM) ha−1 to 3290 kg DM ha−1 on average over a 5-d grazing period as a consequence of the relatively low grazing pressure imposed. This resulted in a mean decline in intake per bite of 28%, and the changes for cattle and sheep did not differ significantly. However, there was a marked difference in the other behavioural responses of the two species; in the sheep biting rate fell and grazing time increased with declining herbage mass, particularly in the sward previously grazed infrequently, whereas the changes in the cattle were small.Differences in the botanical composition of the herbage eaten by cattle and sheep were minor, but there was a small but consistent advantage to the sheep in the digestibility of the herbage eaten.In the first of the two periods the variation in surface height after grazing was substantially greater for sheep-grazed than for cattle-grazed swards, indicating more patchy grazing by the sheep.Estimates of daily herbage organic matter (OM) intake calculated from ingestive behaviour variables were high (means 38 and 32 g (kg LW) −1 for cattle and sheep respectively) and usually declined substantially over a grazing period.

    Notes: Development of simulation models of grazing beef cattle requires measurement of the components of the ingestive process and the establishment of relationships between these components and the structure of the sward. The ingestive behaviour of eight half-sib Angus steers (live weight (LW), x̄= 270 kg) grazing alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) was studied at three stages of maturity (26, 40 and 47 days of regrowth) and at four allowances of herbage dry matter (DM) (1·0, 1·5, 20 and 2·5 kg per 100 kg LW) at each of two daily grazing sessions. A tethering system of grazing was used in which the experimental unit was a tethered steer and its plot for one grazing session. Grazing sessions commenced at 08.00 and 14.00 h EDT. Intake (DM) increased linearly from 1·98 kg per steer session at a DM allowance of 1 kg (100 kg LW)−1 to 2 89 kg steer session at an allowance of 2·5 kg (100 kg LW) −1 as utilization of herbage declined linearly from 0·69 to 0·43. Herbage DM in take per bite increased from 1 0 g at 1 kg (100 kg LW) −1 allowance to 1·5 g at 2·5 kg (100 kg LW) −1 allowance. Rates of biting were not affected by herbage allowance and averaged 21 bites min−1. Dry matter intake increased from 1·77 to 3 41 kg per steer session as the alfalfa matured and herbage mass changed from 1500 to 4656 kg ha−1. Mean rates of biting were 24 bites min−1 for steers grazing the youngest alfalfa and 16 bites min−1 for steers on the oldest forage. Herbage DM intakes per bite were 1·1 g and 1·7 g at the same stages. Rates of DM intake approached 2 kg h−1 and maximum daily DM intake was estimated at 2 75 kg (100 kg LW) −1. Intake of alfalfa was limited by allowance and mass of herbage above a canopy horizon of 20 cm and, to a lesser extent, by the length of fast.

    Description: SUMMARYThe objectives of the current study were to determine the variation structure within a day and across days when determining dry matter intake (DMI) of Coastal bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.) pasture using dotriacontane (C32) as an external marker, to determine the optimal times for faecal collection for forage DMI estimation and to compare C31 and C33 as internal markers in estimating forage DMI in Brahman bulls. Sixteen Brahman bulls were allocated by weight to four pastures, and stocked at a moderate to low grazing pressure for 63 days from late June to the end of August. Three intake measurement periods (P1, P2, P3) were used; each period consisting of 10 days of twice daily C32 (400 mg/day) administration. Faecal collections were taken during the last 5 days (07.00, 11.00, 15.00 and 19.00 h). The C32 was individually hand fed using Calan gates, with maize gluten as a carrier for the alkane. Gas chromatography was used to determine n-alkanes in the forage and faecal samples. The concentration of C31 was less than C33 in the bermudagrass for all periods (P  0·05). The average concentration of C32 in the forage was 5·1, 7·6 and 9·6 mg/kg dry matter (DM), for P1, P2 and P3, respectively, with an average of 7·5 mg/kg DM for all periods. During P1 and P2, the estimation of forage DMI using C33 had a better fit (smaller –2 × log and Akaike's information criterion (AIC)) than using C31 either with or without adjustments for C32. The variation in estimated forage DMI decreased when forage C32 was not included. The variances of forage DMI were similar using C31 across days, but the Pearson correlations between days were low, which suggested that several days of collection were needed to estimate forage DMI accurately. Correlations between collection times within days were medium to high for all periods and varied from 0·65 to 0.97 for C31 and from 0·26 to 0·96 for C33. When all periods were analysed together, estimates of forage DMI either using C31 or C33 had low correlations between days of collection. Adjustment for C32 did not improve the variance and (co)variance matrix. In summary, C33/C32 had the lowest variation in estimating forage DMI, and at least 5 days of faecal collection were needed to decrease the variability of estimating forage DMI. The optimum times for faecal collection were 07.00 and 19.00 h, and it was important to adjust for C32 alkane concentration in estimating forage DMI in Brahman bulls grazing Coastal bermudagrass.
