    Notes: Aquaculture is an important factor in the fishery of Laguna de Bay in the Philippines; fish-pens and net-cages covered ≈10% of the lake surface in the late 1990s. The present study was carried out to assess the possible influences of aquaculture on a wild fish species, silverperch, Terapon plumbeus Kner, with a special emphasis on the feeding ecology of this fish. For the purposes of the investigation, 24-h samples were taken at 2-month intervals close to a fish-pen as well as in open water over a one-year period to acquire more information on this species. Significant differences in standard length and total weight were found between stations and sampling months. In open water, a mean standard length of 53.6 mm and a mean total weight of 4.2 g were found, whereas close to the fish-pen, the corresponding values were 57.6 mm and 5.4 g, respectively. The maximum mean standard length was attained around December 1996 and February 1997 (59.5 mm in open water; 66.1 mm close to the fish-pen), and the minimum was found in June 1996 (49.1 mm in open water; 46.2 mm close to the fish-pen). Noticeable differences were found in the food spectrum between the two sampling stations. Zooplankton, the major food source at both stations, was more important in the stomach content of fish in open water. The same was true for insects (i.e. chironomid larvae), although these did not make up such a large fraction of the diet. On the other hand, close to the fish-pen, aufwuchs-algae, phytoplankton and fish were more important. Generally, benthic organisms were consumed more frequently close to the fish-pen. Zooplankton was more important in the diet of smaller fish. In all size groups, the importance of zooplankton decreased during the rainy season.

    Notes: An 8-week feeding trial was conducted in a warmwater recirculation system at 27 ± 0.2 °C to evaluate the nutritive value of dhaincha (Sesbania aculeata) seed meal as a possible fish meal substitute in the diet of tilapia. Five isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets were formulated to contain 32% crude protein and 18.4 kJ g−1 gross energy. Sesbania seed meal was included in diets at various levels [0%, 9.7%, 19.4%, 29.1% and 38.8% for diets 1 (control), 2, 3, 4 and 5, respectively, which correspond to 0%, 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% of dietary crude protein]. Each treatment had two replicates, eight fish per replicate, with mean initial weight of 7.06 ± 0.03 g. Fish were fed 20 g kg−1 metabolic body weight daily. On the basis of the observed growth rate, feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio, apparent net protein utilization and energy retention, diets 1 (control) and 2 (containing 9.7% Sesbania meal) were similar and significantly (P 〈 0.05) better than the other dietary groups. Fish fed diets 3, 4 and 5 containing higher levels of Sesbania meal showed significantly reduced growth performance compared with those fed diets 1 and 2. Fish fed diets 3, 4 and 5 had significantly lower faecal dry matter (DM) content, apparent crude protein, lipid and energy digestibility and reduced levels of cholesterol compared with the control and diet 2. Fish fed diets containing higher levels (〉9.7%) of Sesbania meal had significantly higher whole-body moisture, lower lipid and gross energy content. The lower growth performance of fish fed diets containing higher levels of Sesbania meal is thought to result from the presence of tannins, saponin and the non-starch polysaccharide content of the seed. The results of this study showed that inclusion of up to 9.7% untreated Sesbania seed meal (10% of the dietary protein) in the diet did not affect the growth performance and nutrient utilization in tilapia.

    Notes: Twelve carp, Cyprinus carpio L., were grown from 30 to 120 g live mass on four diets, control (405 g kg−1 crude protein, 20.6 MJ kg−1 gross energy) and control + 200, 400 or 600 mg kg−1L-carnitine. The diets were designated as CONT, C200, C400 and C600, respectively. Each diet was randomly assigned three fish kept in individual open-circuit respirometers. Fish that ate diets C400 and C600 grew faster than the controls, expended less energy and retained more energy per unit of food energy intake. Average energetic efficiency, expressed as energy retained per unit of energy expended, was 30% higher in the C400 group than in the controls. However, owing to the small number of fish in each group and the large variations in all these parameters, especially within the control group, none of these differences reached statistical significance at the P= 0.1 level.

    Notes: An 8-week feeding trial was conducted using tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus L., in a recirculation system maintained at 27±0.2°C to observe the negative effects of Sesbania endosperm on growth and nutrient utilization. Five experimental diets were formulated to contain 32% protein, of which fishmeal was the major source. Endosperm separated from Sesbania seeds was included at levels of 0.0%, 2.9%, 5.8%, 8.7% and 11.6% in diets 1 (control), 2, 3, 4 and 5, respectively, equivalent to levels of 0.0%, 9.7%, 19.4%, 29.1% and 38.8%, respectively, of whole Sesbania seeds. Each treatment had two replicates, eight fish per replicate, with a mean initial live weight of 5.2±0.1 g. Fish were fed 20 g per  kg metabolic body weight of fish daily. The body weight gain, metabolic growth rate, feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio, protein productive value and energy retention of fish fed the control and diet 2 were significantly better (P〈0.05) than those of fish fed the other diets. Physical observation showed that the intestines of the fish fed diets that included endosperm contained loose, viscous and sticky material. Fish fed diets 3, 4 and 5 had a lower proportion of dry matter in their faeces, and lower apparent crude lipid and energy digestibility coefficients compared with fish fed the control diet and diet 2. They also had significantly reduced levels of muscle and plasma cholesterol, whole-body crude protein, lipid and gross energy.

    Notes: The free-living nematode Panagrellus redivivus has been recommended as a suitable food source for first-feeding fish. A new technology for mass production of P. redivivus enables fish hatchery operators to rely on an inexpensive, standardized and permanently available live food for first-feeding fish larvae. The proximate composition, and the fatty acid and amino acid profiles of nematodes mass produced on oat-based and purified ingredient media were determined. The quality of nematodes was significantly influenced by the culture medium used. The lipid content and fatty acid composition of nematodes could be modified by using lipid-enriched media. Mass-produced nematodes were tested on first-feeding common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) and whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) larvae. Carp larvae, grown on nematodes cultured on oat medium enriched with sunflower oil, showed a higher survival rate (87.1%) than the control group fed frozen zooplankton (82.9%) at the end of the 1-week feeding experiment. Differences in larval mass between the treatments disappeared after subsequent feeding of a dry diet for 2 weeks. Whitefish larvae can be reared exclusively on a dry diet; here, the initial feeding of nematodes had no effect on final biomass and survival of larvae.

    Notes: The oxygen consumption of 6 carps was measured in a flow-through respirometer when water temperature was reduced from 23 to 7°C and increased from 23 to 33°C as well as from 11 to 32°C. The metabolic reaction of Cyprinus carpio L. was assessed at 3 levels: standard, routine and spontaneous. The Standard Metabolic Rate increased and the Q10 decreased with rising temperatures. A quadratic relation was established between metabolic rates and temperature level. The enery exenditure above Standard Metabolic Rate induced by temperature changes was 6.65 ± 1.97 kJ kg-0.8 d-1 (x ± S.E., N = 6).Costs for temperature acclimatization amounted to 29 %, 24 % and 9 % of the energy required for standard, routine and spontaneous action metabolism, respectively.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Zusammenfassung Temperaturinduzierte Stoffwechselerhöhungen bei Karpfen, Cyprinus carpio L., während Warm- und KaltakklimatisierungWir haben untersucht, wie der Stoffwechsel von Cyprinus carpio im Standard-, Routine- und Spontanniveau während einer Kalt- und Warmakklimatisierung im Bereich von 7–33 °C reagiert. Die durch Temperaturänderun induzierte Stoffwechselerhöhung über die Standardrate wurde für den Meßbereich mit 6.65 ± 1.97 kJ kg-0.8 d-1 (x ± S.E., N = 6) ermittelt.Der Anteil temperaturinduzierter Aufwendungen entsprach 29%, 24% und 9% des Standard-, Routine- und Spontanverbrauches an Energie.

    Notes: It has often been claimed that male tilapia appear to grow faster than females, which may be caused either by a sex-specific physiological growth capacity, female mouth-brooding or the more aggressive feeding behaviour of males. To test for differences in the physiological growth capacity of both sexes, 45 Oreochromis niloticus were reared individually for 109 days in aquaria or respirometric boxes connected to recirculating systems. During this time, body mass increased from 38.2 ± 6.5 g to 130.9 ± 39.5 g for males and 34.5 ± 5.5 g to 163.2 ± 29.8 g for females.In contrast to results for previous studies on group rearing reported in the literature, body mass gain, metabolic growth rate, feed conversion and productive protein value (PPV) were significantly (P 〈 0.05) better for females than for males in our experiment under individual rearing. Energy retention (K101), heat dissipation and non-utilized energy were also slightly more favorable for females than for males. The superior female growth performance in this study is due to lower metabolic costs, i.e. oxygen consumption is lower for females than for males. The growth superiority of males reported in other studies is therefore probably caused by behavioral rather than physiological factors.

    Notes: The present study assessed the suitability of titanium(IV) oxide, TiO2, as a digesta passage marker in Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus and studied the shape of the evacuation curve in this species. In three separate trials, fish were given one dose of either 0·5, 0·25 or 0·1% of their body mass (% BME) of feed marked with 1% TiO2 or 0·5% BME of the same feed without marker. The fish were serially slaughtered at intervals after feeding and the stomach contents analysed for dry mass and marker content. The data for individual trials were analysed with the linear, square root, surface area and exponential evacuation models and parameter comparisons showed that, although the marker interfered slightly with the evacuation process, true meal size could be predicted more accurately from the marker data. The results of an analysis of the combined data sets suggested that stomach evacuation in this species is dependent more on food particle surface area (surface area model) than on stomach content mass (exponential model) as is generally assumed. On the basis of these results, it was concluded that TiO2 at an inclusion level of 1% is an acceptable marker for quantifying evacuation with a view to predicting food consumption but should be used with caution in digestibility studies.

    Notes: Abstract In two laboratory experiments using tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and common carp (Cyprinus carpio), we investigated the effect of lipid content in the fish carcass on the stable carbon isotope ratio (δ13C). In both experiments, a significant negative correlation was found between lipid content in the carcass dry matter and δ13C of total dry matter, but there was no influence on the δ13C of fat-free dry matter or lipids. As the lipid content of fish is known to vary with reproductive stage, season or nutritional state, separate analysis of fractions of the proximate composition of dry matter will lead to more reliable results than analysing the whole body. The differences in δ13C between diet and fish carcass (trophic shift) were different for the two species, calling for feeding trials under controlled conditions using the species and the feeds in question before applying the stable isotope tracer technique in the analysis of food webs.
