    Description: Macroseismic intensity information is important in the evaluation of historical seismicity. In an effort to improve the current South African earthquake catalogue, available macroseismic information of historical and early instrumental period earthquakes were used to determine epicentres and magnitudes of 46 earthquakes. Each of them had at least eight Intensity Data Points (IDPs). The IDPs were dominated by relatively low intensity values, which are consistent with a stable continental region. The source parameters were computed using state-of-the-art 3rd generation techniques. The quality of obtained solutions was greatly influenced by the spatial distribution of the IDPs, which was not uniform for all the events, with some events having clustered IDPs whilst others were linearly distributed. As a result, a quality ranking system of the results was developed to give an indication of the confidence in the results. Of the 46 earthquakes analysed, 36 had good quality results. The methods used were also checked by comparing solutions obtained using macroseismic data to those obtained for the same events but using instrumental data. Twelve events analysed in this study are new events that were not in previous catalogues. The results obtained help in improving the earthquake catalogue of the region, as there is an increase in the number of events recorded in the historical and early-instrument period. This kind of work and results obtained highlight the value of seeking out additional contemporary sources in order to revise the source parameters of earthquakes for which no or only very limited instrumental information is available.

    Description: A database of intensity observations from instrumentally-recorded earthquakes in South Africa has been compiled as a contribution to the characterisation of seismic hazard. The database contains about 1,000 intensity data points (IDPs) that have been assigned from macroseismic observations retrieved from newspaper reports and questionnaires, and also digitised from previously published isoseismal maps. The database includes IDPs from 57 earthquakes with magnitudes in the range of Mw 2.2 to 6.4, for epicentral distances up to 1,000 km. Sixteen events have 20 or more IDPs, with half of these events having more than 80 IDPs. The database is dominated by relatively low intensity values, mostly determined from human perception of shaking rather than structural damage. However, 19 IDPs correspond to intensity values greater than VI MMI-56. Using geological maps of South Africa, the sites of 60% the IDPs were geologically classified as either ‘rock’ or ‘soil’, the uncertainty in locations precluding such a classification for the remaining data points. A few of the IDPs identified as being from soil sites appear to be strongly influenced by site effects and these were removed from the trimmed database created for exploring ground-motion levels. The trimmed database included 15 earthquakes which have a minimum of five useful IDPs, excluding those with intensity MMI=I and those based on a single observation. After removing such points, and those identified as clear ‘outliers’, a total of 436 useful IDPs were selected.

    Description: The seismicity of Grahamstown, in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, for the years between 1820 and 1936 is investigated with recourse to contemporaneous documentary sources, leading to the development of a seismic history incorporating consideration of the broader geo-political context. Individual studies of five regional events that were felt in Grahamstown during that period, and of one that was not, are presented. Each study includes the development of a full set of intensity data points (IDPs), which are used to determine reappraised epicentral locations and magnitudes, some of which differ significantly from previously listed parameters. The results thus obtained highlight the value of seeking out additional contemporary sources from different language groups when revisiting the source parameters of earthquakes for which no or only very limited instrumental information is available.

    Description: The surf clam Donax serra (Bivalvia, Donacidae) dominates sandy beach communities of two southern African biogeographical regions, a cold (Benguela current) and warm province (Agulhas current). Morphometric and behavioural differences led to a controversial discussion of whether or not populations from the two provinces belong to the same species. Shell size measurements confirmed morphological differences: clams from the cold province were significantly rounder, flatter and less wedge-shaped than clams from the warm province. In this study a genetic approach was used to relate phenotypic differences to genetic variability of four populations of D. serra separated by up to 2 500 km of shoreline. Genetic analysis of twenty-two protein-coding loci was carried out by starch-gel electrophoresis. Populations studied are conspecific (genetic distances range from 0.003 to 0.044) and possess genetic variation (alleles per locus: 1.73 - 1.91; mean heterozygosity: 18 - 22%; percentage polymorphism: 45.5 - 59.1%) in the range of most other marine bivalves, which allows for potential adaptation to environmental changes. Wrights fixation indices show little to moderate genetic divergence among the subpopulations relative to the limiting amount under complete fixation (FST = 0.016 - 0.089), moderate divergence of individuals relative to the total population (FIS = 0.265 - 0.452), and comparably high divergence of individuals relative to the compound population (FIT = 0.300 - 0.473). The effective number of individuals exchanged between populations in each generation is high enough (1.44 - 8.65) to counteract genetic drift. We propose that the observed differences represent phenotypic plasticity enabling this species to inhabit different biogeographic regions. Gene flow, balanced selective pressure and evolutionary inertia are discussed as explanations for similarities of the two outlying populations. The substantial subdivision of the two Namibian populations indicates a potential biotic barrier and requires separate studies of the population dynamics.

    Description: The preparation of earthquake catalogues for seismic hazard analysis requires the use of uniform parameters, in particular for magnitudes, although the original data include a variety of formats, such as macroseismic intensities and various instrumental mag- nitude scales. In regions of low seismicity, such as South Africa, data are generally sparse and not always suffi- cient to develop locally calibrated conversion relations. They can nevertheless be used to test the applicability of imported conversion relations, as well as their consis- tency. The Koffiefontein region of South Africa pro- vides a good test case in view of its somewhat higher level of seismicity, and central geographic location with- in the country. This paper reviews determinations of location and magnitude parameters for a suite of moderate-to-large earthquakes that have occurred in this region between 1903 and 1985.

    Notes: Abstract Fluorescence techniques, including lifetime, quenching, and time-resolved anisotropy measurements (TRAMS), were used to study microgel systems based upon N-isopropylacrylamide (NI-PAM) using pyrene as a fluorescent probe. These experiments have revealed that poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) nanoparticles undergo a phase transition at a lower critical solution temperature (LCST), of ca. 34°C, which involves collapse of the particles into compacted, hydrophobic spheres. A degree of control over the LCST has been achieved by copolymerization of NIPAM with varying amounts of dimethylacrylamide (DMAC). Incorporation of DMAC into the gel has the effect of changing the hydrophobic to hydrophilic balance and shifts the LCST to a higher temperature. Fluorescence methods indicate that the NIPAM/DMAC gels are of a more open, water-swollen nature above the LCST than that of their PNIPAM counterparts.
