Summary If adult females ofDaphnia longispina O.F.M. are kept on a diet of pure starch certain muscular changes develop. The changes in the heart muscle comprise a softening of the diastolic and a slowing of the systolic movement. As symptoms develop the heart may become deformed because of discoordination in the work of the different muscle fibers, while the diastolic heart volume may be reduced. At the same time heart rate becomes reduced also and finally pulsation stops. Aneurin can, if given not too late (see figure), restore normal heart rate for about one day. It could be shown that this action, if used under the experimental conditions, is specific for the aneurin molecule.
