Description: In The New Woman in Early Twentieth-Century Chinese Fiction, Jin Feng proposes that representation of the "new woman" in Communist Chinese fiction of the earlier twentieth century was paradoxically one of the ways in which male writers of the era explored, negotiated, and laid claim to their own emerging identity as "modern" intellectuals. Specifically, Feng argues that male writers such as Lu Xun, Yu Dafu, Ba Jin, and Mao Dun created fictional women as mirror images of their own political inadequacy, but that at the same time this was also an egocentric ploy to affirm and highlight the modernity of the male author. This gender-biased attitude was translated into reality when women writers emerged. Whereas unfair, gender-biased criticism all but stifled the creative output of Bing Xin, Fang Yuanjun, and Lu Yin, Ding Ling's dogged attention to narrative strategy allowed her to maintain subjectivity and independence in her writings; that is until all writers were forced to write for the collective. Feng addresses both the general and the specialized audience of fiction in early-twentieth-century Chinese fiction in three ways: for scholars of the May Fourth period, Feng redresses the emphasis on the simplistic, gender-neutral representation of the new women by re-reading selected texts in the light of marginalized discourse and by an analysis of the evolving strategies of narrative deployment; for those working in the area of feminism and literary studies, Feng develops a new method of studying the representation of Chinese women through an interrogation of narrative permutations, ideological discourses, and gender relationships; and for studies of modernity and modernization, the author presents a more complex picture of the relationships of modern Chinese intellectuals to their cultural past and of women writers to a literary tradition dominated by men.

Notes: We described a facile approach to controllably synthesize silver nanoparticles withvarious morphologies using N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) in the presence of poly (vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP). Triangular/hexagonal nanoplates, chain-like nanoplate assemblies, andnanobelts could be selectively obtained. On the basis of the experimental results, the concentrationof poly (vinyl pyrrolidone) and AgNO3, reactive temperature and time were the vital factors todetermine the shape of final products. Reasonable mechanisms for the formation of silvernanoparticles with various morphologies were proposed. Fluorescence modulation of dyerhodamine B (RhB) and fluorescein (FI) in the presence of silver nanoparticles were studied.Addition of silver nanoparticles could produce fluorescence enhancement and show self-quenchingrelease of RhB, while the fluorescence intensity of FI decreased due to the presence of the silvernanoparticles. The effects of silver nanoparticles on the fluorescence properties of dyes weredependent on the competition between the local field enhancement and non-radiation energytransfer from the molecule to the metallic nanoparticles

Notes: AlN-BN composite Powders with the microstructure of micrometer-sized AlN particlescoated with BN particles were prepared via a chemical reaction, which used a mixture of boric acid(H3BO3) and urea (CO(NH2)2) as reactants coated on the surface of the AlN particles to react innitrogen ambient. The XRD and TEM studies showed that the coating layer (BN) was composedmostly of amorphous BN particles at the reaction temperature of 850oC ~1100oC. When thecomposite powders formed into pellets using cold isostatic-pressing, then, sintered at pressurelesssintering, the relative density of the composites that contained 15wt% BN reached above 98%, andthere was homogeneous microstructure

Notes: Abstract The MukB protein is essential for chromosome partitioning in Escherichia coli and consists of 1484 amino acid residues (170 kDa). We have determined the base changes at the mutated sites of the mukB106 mutant and a newly isolated mutant, mukB33. These mutant mukB genes were each found to carry a single base-pair transition which leads to an amino acid substitution; a serine residue at position 33 was changed to phenylalanine in the case of mukB106, and an aspartic acid residue at position 1201 was changed to asparagine in the case of mukB33.

Notes: The voltage response of ZnO varistors to 8/20 µs surge current was investigated. The observed frontal spikes on the residual voltage waveforms are caused by the ignition gap, and no frontal spike was observed when a thyristor was used as the discharge trigger. The rear part of the waveform is determined by the damping coefficient of the RLC-circuit. Near the critical point, the residual voltage waveformchanges from non-oscillating attenuation modes to distinct across zero oscillating modes along with the increase of the peak current, but there will be no oscillation happen when a thyristor is used as the discharge trigger. The residual voltage peak is not synchronized with the current peak, and the voltage peak is leading, implying that the ZnO varistor appears to be inductive. According to the experiment results, it can be reasonably explained that the voltage peak leading phenomenon is attributed to the transient skin effect of the varistor materials

Notes: Abstract Highly purified plasma membranes were isolated by aqueous two-phase partitioning from rice (Oryza sativa) seedling roots. The effects of lanthanum chloride (LaCl3) on the activities of lipid peroxidation, the redox system and H+-ATPase, Ca2+-ATPase of plasma membranes were studied. The lipid peroxidation of plasma membranes could be depressed by certain low concentrations of LaCl3 and enhanced by high concentrations of LaCl3, while the lipid peroxidation was also dependent on the plasma membrane protein and incubation time. The relative activity of O2 uptake of plasma membranes was inhibited by all tested LaCl3 concentrations. In contrast, the reduction rate of Fe(CN)6 3− by plasma membranes was stimulated below 40 μM of LaCl3, but was reduced above 60 μM of LaCl3. The relative activities of both H+-ATPase and Ca2+-ATPase increased constantly from control to LaCl3 of concentration 60 μM where the activities of both enzymes were the maximum, but decreased remarkably at 80 μM LaCl3 concentrations various LaCl3 were added to culture solutions. In the other measurement case in which various LaCl3 concentrations were added directly to reaction medium and the plasma membrane vesicles only came from the control cultured rice seedling roots, the response of H+-ATPase activity to La3+ was similar to the response in culture solution. However, the La3+ concentration was only 20 μM when the activity of H+-ATPase was the maximum. In contrast to the case of LaCl3 addition to culture solution, Ca2+-ATPase activity was inhibited by all concentrations of La3+ which were added directly to the reaction medium. The above results revealed that REEs inhibited electron transfer from NADH to oxygen in plant plasma membranes, depressed the production of active oxygen radicals, and reduced the formation of lipid peroxides through plasma membrane lipid peroxidation. REEs ions also enhanced the H+ extrusion by both standard redox system and H+-ATPase in plasma membranes at certain concentrations. A possible role for the plant cell wall in REEs effects on plasma membranes was also suggested.
