    Notes: Summary Intravenous aminophylline 0.48 g produced a sharp increase in plasma free fatty acids. After three days of treatment with aminophylline 0.96 g/day i. v., plasma post-heparin lipoprotein lipase was significantly reduced, and post-heparin hepatic triglyceridase remained unchanged. Alpha1lipoprotein was reduced by treatment, in parallel with lipoprotein lipase, while other lipoprotein fractions, serum cholesterol and triglycerides were unaffected.

    Notes: Summary Indomethacin 50 mg i.v. or p.o. and diclofenac sodium 50 mg p.o produced a prompt and significant increase in plasma free fatty acid concentration. In 10 subjects who took indomethacin 150 mg/d p.o. for 3 days, plasma post-heparin lipoprotein lipase activity was also significantly increased. The same effect occurred in 9 subjects treated for 3 days with diclofenac sodium 50 mg t.d.s. Since both indomethacin and diclofenac sodium are potent inhibitors of prostaglandin synthetase, these findings are consistent with the hypothesis that prostaglandins are involved in the feed-back regulation of lipolysis, and mediate the inhibitory effect of lipolysis on lipoprotein lipase activity.

    Notes: Summary Twenty five hypertriglyceridaemic patients (16 Type IV and 9 Type IIb) were treated with fenofibrate 300 mg/d. In Type IV patients serum triglycerides and VLDL cholesterol decreased, while LDL and HDL cholesterol rose significantly. In Type IIb patients, triglycerides and total, VLDL, IDL and LDL cholesterol were significantly reduced by the treatment. The correction of hypertriglyceridaemia by fenofibrate seems, therefore, to induce different changes in lipoproteins in Type IIb and in Type IV hyperlipoproteinaemic patients. The practical implications of these results are discussed.

    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto È stata studiata e verificata sperimentalmente la relazione di dispersione per le onde elettrostatiche ioniche di ciclotrone nel plasma stazionario prodotto nella macchina THORELLO. La scarica è innescata dagli elettroni emessi da un filamento incandescente e accelerati da un intenso campo elettrico. La temperatura e la densità elettroniche sono misurate mediante sonde di Langmuir. Si registrano temperature elettroniche di (4÷5) eV con densità dell’ordine di 1·1010 cm−3. Il massimo campo magnetico toroidale sull’asse è di 2 kG. Le onde sono eccitate da un sistema di antenne metalliche immerse nel plasma e sono rivelate da una sonda che si può muovere all’interno del plasma. Un sistema interferometrico è in grado di misurare il numero d’onda perpendicolare per ogni valore di frequenza. Il confronto dei dati sperimentali con le curve teoriche offre la possibilità di stimare l’ordine di grandezza della temperatura ionica.
    Abstract: Резюме исследуется дисперсионное соотношение для электростатических ионных циклотронных волн в эксперименте Торелло (тнорелло) в стационарной замагниченнои тороидальной плазме, образованной в различных нейтральных газах эмиссией электронов и ускорением за счет смещающего напряжения. Температура и плотность электронов составляют по порядку величины 5 эВ и 1010 см−3, соответственно. Максимальное тороидальное магнитное поле на оси составляет около 2 кГс. Волны возбуждаются парой тонких металлических лезвий, питаемых в противофазе высокочастотным сигналом малой мощности (〈10 Вт), и детектируются подвижным высокочастотным датчиком. Интерферометрический метод позволяет оценить перпендикулярное волновое число для любой заданной частоты. Подгонка экспериментальных данных с теоретическими кривыми дает возможность оценить порядок величины ионной температуры.
    Notes: Summary Electrostatic ion cyclotron wave dispersion relation has been studied in the experiment THORELLO, a steady-state magnetized toroidal plasma, produced in different neutral gases by hot-filament electron emission and acceleration by a bias voltage. Electron temperature and density, evaluated by Langmuir probes, are of the order of 5eV and 1010 cm−3, respectively. The maximum toroidal magnetic field on the axis is about 2kG. The waves are excited by a pair of thin metallic blades, fed with opposite phase by a low power (〈10 W) RF signal, and detected by a movable RF probe. An interferometric method allows the evaluation of the perpendicular wave number, for any given frequency. The fit of experimental data with theoretical curves gives the possibility to evaluate the order of magnitude of the ion temperature.

Si mostra la presenza di un unico modo forward e di un insieme infinito di modi backward. Si analizzano le caratteristiche di propagazione di queste onde e la possibilità di conversioni tra di esse.
    Abstract: Резюме Исследуется электростатическое дисперсионное соотношение для намагниченной плазмы с низкой температурой и низкой плотностью в области ионной циклотронной частоты и ее первой гармоники. Показывается наличие единственной моды в направлении вперед и бесконечного числа волн в обратном направлении. Анализируются характеристики распространения этих мод и возможность конверсии.
    Notes: Summary The electrostatic dispersion relation for a low-temperature, low-density magnetized plasma has been studied in the range of the ion cyclotron frequency and its first harmonics. The presence of a forward wave and of an infinite number of backward waves has been shown. The characteristics of propagation of these modes and the possibility of conversion are analysed.

    Notes: Wave-particle interaction phenomena in the Alfvén Eigenmode (AE) frequency range are investigated at the Joint European Torus [P. H. Rebut and B. E. Keen, Fusion Technol. 11, 13 (1987)] using active and passive diagnostic methods. Fast particles are generated by neutral beam injection, ion cyclotron resonance heating, and fusion reactions. External antennas are used to excite stable AEs and measure fast particle drive and damping separately. Comparisons with numerical calculations lead to an identification of the different damping mechanisms. The use of the active AE diagnostic system to generate control signals based on the proximity to marginal stability limits for AE and low-frequency magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes is explored. Signatures of the different nonlinear regimes of fast particle driven AE instabilities predicted by theory are found in the measured spectra. The diagnostic use of AE measurements to get information both on the plasma bulk and the fast particle distribution is assessed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Fast collisionless magnetic reconnection is driven and observed in a toroidal magnetic cusp. For low values of the toroidal (guide) magnetic field, reconnection occurs without the formation of a macroscopic current channel. In the absence of a current channel, the measured plasma potential and poloidal flows are consistent with predictions based upon single particle theory. Only for large values of the toroidal magnetic field compared to cusp poloidal field is a current channel present. Also in this case single particle orbit theory provides a good description of the anomalous resistivity observed experimentally. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The onset of chaotic ion dynamics in electrostatic waves is investigated in a linear magnetized plasma. The existence of a threshold for heating in agreement with the predictions of single particle Hamiltonian theories and the fast time scale for velocity space diffusion are observed in the experiment. Measurements of test-particle dynamics indicate an exponential separation of initially close ion trajectories for amplitudes above the heating threshold. Ion orbits in the different wave–particle interaction regimes are inferred using an optical tagging diagnostic method, which provides the two point correlation function in phase space.
