Summary On the western margin of the Guayana-shield, which was consolidated in the Algonkian Era, a geosyncline was formed in the Cambrian. This was folded up in an alpinotype orogenesis at the turn from the Ordovician to the Silurian. Epi- and mesozonal metamorphites of this epoch are preserved in the Central and the East Cordillera and in western Venezuela. After that time the Cordillera passed a period of postorogenetic germanotype deformation, which started in the late Paleozoic and continued up to the Cenozoic. The paleozoic (Devonian to Permian) sedimentation was restricted to an intracontinental trough.
