    Notes: Abstract This paper presents an example of a piecewise linear map used to model the dynamics of certain nonlinear mechanical systems. It is shown that a period three solution exists, and computational study seems to indicate that it is a global attractor except possibly over a set of measure zero. The computations are performed using the cell mapping approach from both the deterministic and probabilistic points of view.

    Description: A nonparametric identification technique for the identification of close coupled dynamic systems with arbitrary memoryless nonlinearities is presented. The method utilizes noisy recorded data (acceleration, velocity and displacement) to identify the restoring forces in the system. The masses in the system are assumed to be known (or fairly well estimated from the design drawings). The restoring forces are expanded in a series of orthogonal polnomials and the coefficients of these polynomial expansions are obtained by using least square fit method. A particularly simple and computationally efficient method is proposed for dealing with separable restoring forces. The identified results are found to be relatively insensitive to measurement noise. An analysis of the effects of measurement noise on the quality of the estimates is given. The computations are shown to be relatively quick (when compared say to the Wiener identification method) and the core storage required relatively small, making the method suitable for onboard identification of large space structures.

    Description: The optimum sensor location problem, OSLP, may be thought of in terms of the set of systems, S, the class of input time functions, I, and the identification algorithm (estimator) used, E. Thus, for a given time history of input, the technique of determining the OSL requires, in general, the solution of the optimization and the identification problems simultaneously. A technique which uncouples the two problems is introduced. This is done by means of the concept of an efficient estimator for which the covariance of the parameter estimates is inversely proportional to the Fisher Information Matrix.

    Notes: Abstract This paper presents a new method for identification of parameters in nonlinear structural and mechanical systems in which the initial guesses of the unknown parameter vectors may be far from their true values. The method uses notions from the field of artificial neural nets and, using an initial set of training parameter vectors, generates in an adaptive fashion other relevant training vectors to yield identification of the parameter vector in a recursive fashion. The simplicity and power of the technique are illustrated by considering three highly nonlinear systems. It is shown that the technique presented here yields excellent estimates with only a limited amount of response data, even when each element of the set comprising the initial training parameter vectors is far from its true value—in fact, sufficiently far that the usual recursive identification schemes fail to converge.

    Notes: Abstract Managerial strategies, especially at the higher echelons of management, are often linguistically stated. This is because they need to be based on information which often defies quantification. Such verbal strategies and qualitative information have often been found to be difficult to incorporate in quantitative models. Thus, the quantitative effects of implementing one strategy as opposed to another have generally been difficult to forecast. In this paper, we show that, through the use of fuzzy logic, we can incorporate such qualitative (linguistically stated) information. Furthermore, we show that a fuzzy controller can be designed so as to reach desired goals while being cognizant of linguistically stated strategies, scenarios, and decision rules as well as quantitative data types. The approach is applied to the modeling and control of market penetration, a field which has attracted considerable attention in recent years.

    Description: This paper deals with the identification of systems described by the one-dimensional, second order wave equation. Such equations arise commonly in various areas of mathematical physics, such as, acoustics, elastic wave propagation, and electromagnetic theory. Assuming that suitable measurements are made at only one point in the spatial domain, sufficient conditions for unique identification of the system eigenvalues and system coefficients are presented.
