Notes: Abstract By means of computer simulation we have calculated the distribution functions of dipole fields in disordered crystalline and amorphous ferromagnetic alloys A1-xBx. It is shown that for all cubic lattice sites in simple cubic, body-centred cubic and face-centred cubic materials as well as for amorphous materials the envelopes of the distribution functions may be obtained in a satisfactory approximation by considering only the nearest contributing atoms. Whereas in crystalline materials we have a complicated structure of the distribution functions for arbitrary values ofx, we obtain simple Gaussian distributions for the case of amorphous materials, using Heimendahl's model of the amorphous structure. The influence of isotropic and anisotropic short-range order is discussed in detail.

Notes: Abstract For binary alloys with only one sort of magnetic atoms we have calculated, by means of computer simulations, the distribution of magnetic dipole fields at regular lattice sites and suitably defined interstitial sites for the magnetic ground state of amorphous ferromagnetic and speromagnetic alloys and crystalline and amorphous spin glasses. Thereby we have considered spatially random arrangements of atoms and have neglected all magnetic correlations in the case of speromagnets and spin glasses. We have derived symmetric and isotropic distribution functions, which are fairly well described by Gaussian distributions for large concentrations of magnetic atoms only. The distribution functions are characterized by their second moments, which are important for the discussion of NMR and μ+ SR relaxation rates in these materials.

Notes: Abstract The dipole fields at interstitial sites occupied by positive particles (μ +,p) in f.c.c. and b.c.c. diluted binary alloys of ferromagnetic metals are investigated. The characteristic shapes of the distribution functions of the dipole fields is shown to depend on the interstitial site occupied by the positive particle, and they may give information on the formation of diatomic complexes of the light interstitials with substitutional impurity atoms as well as on the degree of short-range order of the alloy.

Notes: 80 Pd20 alloy below the Curie temperature TC(l)=1257 K of the liquid state. The magnetization of the undercooled liquid sample has been measured as a function of temperature using a modified Faraday balance. Below TC(l), the magnetization of the liquid metal shows a plateau in the weak external field of μ0Hz=5.6 mT. The effect is comparable to the behaviour of the corresponding solid phase, indicating the onset of spontaneous magnetization with ferromagnetic domains. TC(l) is about 20 K lower than the Curie temperature of the solid phase TC(s).

Notes: Abstract For the development of new hard-magnetic materials a better understanding of the physical mechanisms which determine the intrinsic magnetic material parameters are of invaluable importance. In this review it is demonstrated that the modern ab initio electron theory yields a considerable help in this direction and may provide data on quantities which are hard to determine reliably by experiments. As an example, theoretical results are reported for the intrinsic magnetic material parameters (local magnetic moments, local magnetic hyperfine fields, crystal-field parameters and effective exchange interactions) of the series R2Fe14B (R = rare earth).

Notes: Abstract The validity of a modified linear chain model for describing the properties of A15 superconductors is discussed in detail. Using this simple model for the electronic density of states, we calculate the critical temperature and the Fermi level as functions of atomic disorder with concentrationc within the framework of the BCS theory. Thereby the experimentally observed saturation effect of the critical temperature is reproduced by taking into account the contribution of three-dimensional electronic states. The microscopic versions of the Ginzburg-Landau equations for systems with a strongly varying electronic density of states and a strongly varying electron velocity are derived for clean and dirty superconductors in order to calculate the Ginzburg-Landau parameter, the coherence length, the penetration depth, and the upper critical field as functions of atomic disorder. It is shown that these quantities depend strongly on the values inserted for the mean free electron pathl(c). Good agreement between theoretical and experimental results is obtained by an appropriate choice ofl(c). In contrast, the thermodynamic critical field is nearly independent ofl(c). In all cases we derive a depression of the pinning forces and the critical current densities with increasing atomic disorder in good agreement with the experiments.

Notes: Abstract Monte Carlo simulations are performed for pure and site-diluted Ising ferro- and ferrimagnets on a simple cubic lattice with up to 403 sites and with impurity concentrationx. For the diluted ferromagnet (x=0.2) the exponentβ= 0.392±0.03 is definitely larger than the pure model value ofβ=0.304±0.03. In contrast, for ferrimagnetic systems (x=0, 0.1, 0.2) theβ values appear to be independent ofx and within the error limits consistent with the value for the pure ferromagnet, possibly because the width of the asymptotic random critical regime (or of the crossover regime) is even smaller than in the case of ferromagnets.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that the effect of turnovers of the whole spin lattice for temperatures below the ordering temperature during a long-time computer simulation is not always satisfactorily reduced by considering the absolute value of the order parameter. A simple method to overcome this problem is suggested.

Notes: Abstract The exponentα of the specific heatC is determined for the pure and the site-diluted simple cubic Ising model (concentrationx=0, 0.2, 0.4 of nonmagnetic sites) by a finite-size scaling analysis of the peak value Cmax(L) for systems of linear dimensionsL=8, 16, 32, and 64. The Cmax values are obtained by the Ferrenberg-Swendsen algorithm, using Monte Carlo data from a fully-vectorized multi-spin coding program. We obtain α=0.11 for x=0 and a crossover to a negativeα value upon dilution, with α=−0.029(4) both forx=0.2 andx=0.4.
