    Notes: Summary 1. Potamotrygon lacks ampullae of Lorenzini (defined by their long canals), otherwise general for elasmobranchs. There are present however microscopic ampullary organs with extremely short canals. A brief histologic description is provided, together with counts of their abundance in various parts of the body. They are chiefly concentrated ventrally in the head region. 2. The skin has a relatively high resistance compared to marine rays. This is measured in the physiologically significant way, by measuring the potential distribution in and around a living ray placed in a homogenous electric field. 3. The microscopical size of the ampullary organs and the high skin resistance are believed to be a specialization maintaining the electroreceptive function in the low conductivity, fresh water medium. 4. These rays are shown to be responsive to d.c. and low-frequency a.c. electric fields. They give specific movements seemingly related to feeding. They seem to be less sensitive than marine sharks and rays. The threshold stimulus is probably less than 120 μV/cm (corresponding to 0.03 μA/cm2 with water resistivity of 4 kOhm · cm). 5. Potamotrygon circularis appears to lack Savi's vesicles. However, an organ which may be equivalent is a tubular, subcutaneous, receptor in the Submandibular region. It does not open to the outside or connect to the skin or to the skeleton. Its spontaneous background nerve impulses and the increases in firing with mechanical stimuli are described.

    Notes: Summary Computer simulation of a relatively simple model can reproduce the main characteristics of the firing patters of some nerve cells. The abdominal stretch receptor of the crayfish has provided an analogous biological model. Synaptic input impulses were simulated by randomly distributed, short lasting transmembrane current pulses. Under these experimental conditions the stretch receptor neurone largely behaved as predicted by the computer simulations.

    Notes: The postulated harmful effects of underwater detonations of explosives on the vascular endothelium in farmed Atlantic salmon were assessed under controlled conditions. Acclimated salmon were exposed to a series of 10 underwater explosions over 70 min, each of ≃2 MPa in pressure amplitude, in a laboratory tank. No mortality occurred immediately or during the subsequent 7 days of observation. The response to each of the 10 detonations was cessation of swimming for a few minutes and failure to express a flight reaction.Structurally, the vascular endothelium of the ventral aorta (VA) and the coeliaco mesenteric artery (CMA) revealed signs of injury within the first 30 min after the experimental shock. In contrast to vessels from the controls, the injury was further aggravated by the mounting procedure for tension recording. The endothelial impairment was temporary, persisting throughout the first days while being restored after 1 week.Functionally, the cholinergic and adrenergic vasoconstrictor responses in the CMA were markedly reduced during the first day after the shock. These responses were similar to those observed in the endothelium probed CMA of controls. The loss of structural integrity and the reduced functional responses indicated a temporary impairment of the vascular endothelium in response to this experimental simulation of a seismic shock.The primary stress hormones, adrenaline and cortisol, were not immediately elevated in plasma, but revealed different patterns of delayed increases. The head kidney content of catecholamines was not altered by the acoustic shock, while the atrial uptake of both calecholamines declined progressively during the 48 h of observation. Plasma chloride was not affected.

    Notes: The possibility of using intense sound as an acoustic barrier for downstream migrating smolt of the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) was studied by observing, the reactions of smolt to 10 and 150 Hz sounds in a small river. At the observation site the river branched into a main course and a minor channel, the latter rejoining the main stream after 30 m. The sound sources were positioned at the lower end of the channel. The number of smolt re-entering the mam stream at the lower end of the channel was recorded during alternating periods with and without sound. Intense 150 Hz sound had no observable effects on the smolt, even at intensities 114 dB above the hearing threshold at this frequency. At intensities above 1.0. 10−2ms−2 the 10 Hz sound was an effective deterrent for the smolt, which turned and left the channel at the upstream branching point.

    Notes: The possibility of using intense sound as a deterrent for juvenile Atlantic salmon (Sulmo salar L.) was studied by recording both physiological awareness reactions in an acoustic tube and behavioural avoidance responses in a pool. The measured awareness reactions consisted of decreased heart rate and breathing movements. Three criteria for the awareness reaction were used to compare the effect of different frequencies between 5 and 150 Hz: (i) threshold for spontaneous awareness reactions relative to the hearing thresholds, (ii) magnitude of the change in heart rate, (iii) degree of habituation to sound. After these criteria the lowest frequencies (5–10 Hz) were most effective in eliciting an awareness reaction from the fish. The responses of freely swimming fish to 10 and 150 Hz sounds were studied in an artificial pool. Juvenile salmon showed avoidance responses to 10 Hz stimulation at intensities 10–15 dB above the threshold for spontaneous awareness reactions measured in the acoustic tube. The 150 Hz sound failed to evoke avoidance responses, even at a level 30 dB above the threshold for spontaneous awareness reactions.

    Notes: A 10-Hz frequency sound caused flight or avoidance responses in juvenile spring chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha and rainbow trout O. mykiss. Groups of fish were placed in 3-m diameter circular tanks with a water depth of 1 m. The sound source was a 25-cm diameter aluminium tube with a piston in one end. The piston was driven back and forth by an eccentric coupling to an electric motor at a frequency of 10 Hz and with peak to peak amplitude of 4 cm. The sound source was turned on for 5 s when the fish was within 1 m. Initial tests always resulted in a strong flight response, but after three to four tests the fish more typically simply swam away as far as possible from the source. This avoidance response did not habituate even after 20 trials.

    Notes: Summary The auditory sensitivity in the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) was measured using an acoustic tube producing sound stimuli with different ratios between sound pressure and particle motion. The upper audible frequency limit in the eel was about 300 Hz. At low frequencies the relevant stimulus parameter was particle motion, excluding involvement of the swimbladder. At the higher frequencies within the audible range the swimbladder conveyed an auditory advantage for stimuli with a high ratio between pressure and particle motion. The eel has an extremely long distance between the swimbladder and the ear. An auditory function of the swimbladder in this species therefore indicates an efficient transmission channel for the reradiated swimbladder pulsations between the bladder and the ear, although specialized anatomical adaptations for this purpose are lacking.
