    Notes: Abstract Physico-chemical analysis of soil samples at an oil spill site in a Typic Udipsamment of the Niger Delta Basin of Nigeria showed that the total hydrocarbon content of top soil layers ranged from 18.6 to 23.6 ppm in the heavy impact zone and the oil had penetrated to a depth op 8.4 m. The concentration of hydrocarbons in the medium impact zone ranged from 10.04 to 10.38 ppm while hydrocarbons were not detected in 85% of samples from the unimpacted reference zone. Heavy metal concentration measurements in the soil revealed a significant build-up (P 〈 0.05) of lead, copper and zinc in the heavy impact zone. Other quality parameters including electrical conductity, exchangeable cations, total nitrogen and available phosphorus in impacted soils were relatively low, while the total organic carbon was high compared with the reference site. Textural class of soil from the different depths showed a predominantly brown sand at the topsoil, loamy sand and grey coarse sand at medium depths, and grey coarse sand and greyish sandy clay at greater depths.

    Notes: Abstract Five crude oil flow stations saver pit effluents were sampledduring the months of May, June, July and August to determinesome of their physico-chemical qualities and microbiologicaldensities before their discharge into the environment. Standardanalytical techniques were employed in the investigation. A highmicrobial density in the range of 106 cfu mL-1 was observed in the samples. The high coliform count obtained poses apotential threat to the local inhabitants of the area. Thephysico-chemical qualities of the effluents appear to falloutside acceptable standards. The pH of the effluent fell belowthe desirable range of 7.0 to 8.5 in May and August inflowstations 3, 4 and 5. Total dissolved solids were above thehighest desirable levels for most months from June to August inall flowstations. Dissolved oxygen levels fell below minimumdesirable level of 2.0 mg L-1 in August for flowstations 1, 2, and4. Adequate treatment of the effluent is required especiallyduring the month of August before discharge into the environment.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of land use, i.e. 2–3 years of cropping, 15–20 years old residential area and fallow land on soilproperties of termite (microtermes sp) mounds in TypicPaleudults was studied in the humid rainforest zone ofMidwestern Nigeria, from January 1995 to May 1995. Termitemound populations increased in the following order: Fallow〉Residential〉 Cropping. Soil sampled from mound surfaces, moundperimeters and surrounding soil was analyzed for routinephysical and chemical properties. The bulk densities werehighest in the mound surface (1.20–1.25 mg m−3), moundperimeters (1.22–1.23 mg m−3) and surface soil (1.27–1.28 mg m−3) of the residential area. There was no significantdifference in the soil textural characteristics among thevarious sampling locations of the three land use types.Particle size distribution in mound perimeters was howeverdependent on land use. With respect to organic carbon, totalN, pH, exchangeable cations and ECEC, no significantdifferences existed, instead they spatially differ from oneanother in terms of land use types and sampling locations.

    Notes: Abstract The population counts of hydrocarbon-utilising yeasts weremonitored at six sampling stations in the Benin City municipalarea over a four-week period. Although the population countswere relatively constant in each locality, the highest countsoccurred in areas heavily polluted by domestic and industrialeffluents. A total of thirty-five hydrocarbon-degrading yeastswere isolated from soil at the sampling stations usingn-hexadecane as sole carbon source. The isolates were identifiedas belonging to the genera Candida (27 strains), Endomycopsis (4 strains). All the organisms grew on long-chainn-alkane, kerosene, diesel oil and crude oil but failed to growon short-chain n-alkane, aromatic and alicyclic hydrocarbons.Measurement of growth attributes of the isolates usingn-hexadecane, diesel oil and crude oil as substrates showed thatthe Candida species were better utilizers of hydrocarbonsubstrates relative to Endomycopsis and Schizosaccharomyces species.
