Notes: The domain reorientation process in polycrystalline materials was investigated through hysteresis loop measurements in soft and hard lead zirconate titanate (PZT) bulk ceramics. In order to investigate the degree of alignment of domains with the electric field the ferroelectric characterizations were performed in two perpendicular directions for each sample. It was found that for the soft PZT, the kinetics of the fatigue process due to space charges in a specific direction is not affected by the previous fatigue story induced in the other perpendicular one thus showing a fatigue anisotropy. This fact was attributed to no displacement of part of space charges during the electric field switching. However, for the hard PZT, an influence of the previous electric story could be observed due to the continuous realignment of the complex defects perpendicularly to the electric field. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Raman scattering has been used to probe short-range structural information on lanthanum-doped lead titanate ceramics (LaxPb1−xTiO3) for x, ranging from 0.0 to 0.30. In highly doped samples (x〉0.27), x-ray diffraction measurements indicate a cubic structure, although measurements of Raman scattering at temperatures above and below the tetragonal to cubic transition showed a residual short-range structural disorder in the cubic phase. Moreover, for these highly lanthanum-doped samples, a well-defined temperature-induced ferro–paraelectric phase transition disappears, which suggests a relationship between local disorder and relaxor behavior in this material. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The polarization switching in Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) ferroelectric bulk ceramics undoped and doped with Nb2O5 or Fe2O3 was studied by means of both hysteresis loops and transient current measurements at room temperature. The results obtained revealed that in PZT ceramics, during the poling process, the reorientation of the polarization may be interpreted as resulting of two contributions: two 90° domain reorientation followed by 90° domain wall rearrangement. 90° domain reorientation is field dependent and responsible for a shoulder observed in the transient current curves, while domain walls contribution is nearly field independent and occurs for longer time. 90° domain wall rearrangement enabled an increase of about 40% of the total polarization in the samples. The reorientation behavior of the domains showed to be strongly influenced by the type of impurity and by the electrical field strength. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Field-induced sharp ferroelectric phase transition was observed in Sr0.66Ba0.34Nb2O6 single crystals. The peaks of the real and imaginary parts of dielectric permittivity arise upon cooling under weak dc bias electric fields and subsequently heating under zero fields or upon cooling under zero fields and subsequently heating under weak electric fields. The applied electric field cancels the random fields that destroy the phase transition and give rise to low temperature domain state if E=0. These results strongly suggest that the SBN system belongs to the random field Ising universality class, a rare case among structural phase transitions. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The occurrence of Haemogregarina bigemina in Blennius pholis was studied at four localities on the Portuguese west coast. Prevalence ranged from 2.9 to 78.6% and was significantly different (P〈 0.01) at the various localities. Intensity of infection in individual fish was usually low (〈 0.01 % of erythrocytes infected) but one specimen was heavily parasitized (2.8% erythrocytes infected). The smallest infected fish was 3.2 cm long; all 7.0 cm and longer fish were infected. Development was not seen outside erythrocytes or within leucocytes. Some erythrocytes (〈 0.01%) in one fish were unusual in containing four mature gametocytes. Circumstantial evidence indicates that prevalence was higher in polluted waters. Possible transmission routes for the parasite are discussed.

Notes: Winter samples totalling 2308 specimens of Trisopterus luscus (total length range: 13–36 cm) caught in northern Portugal were examined for infections with Lernaeocera lusci. Infection prevalence was of 42%, and infection intensity was 1.7 copepods per infected fish. Individual infection varied between 1 and 9 copepods per infected specimen; 30.6% of the fish had bilateral parasitosis. There was a significant correlation (P〈0.01) between fish length and prevalence. Length-weight relationships of uninfected and infected fish were not significantly different (P 〉 0.05) and thus provide evidence that L. lusci has no effect on the condition of T. luscus in all the examined 1–cm size classes.

Notes: A comparative bacteriological and virological survey was conducted in two fish farms in the North of Portugal. The fish species examined included cultured rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), and brown trout, Salmo trutta L., as well as wild fish captured near both facilities. The microbial load in the internal organs of apparently healthy fish was nonitored over a year, an all the disease problems occurring during this period were investigated. Although both farms presented intermediate levels of infection(30–40% infected fish), farm B showed the poorest microbiological quality since constant but low mortalities were observed throughout the year. Flavobacterium and Psedomonas-Xanthomonas were the predominant bacterial groups, comprising around 40–50% of the isolates from each farm. In farm B, members of the Enterobacteriaceae and mortile Aeromonas also showed significant prevalence (about 20%). The only outbreak of a notifiable disease was an occurrence of furunculosis, caused by Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmoncida, in farm A. However, Yersinia ruckeri was isolated not only from diseased fish, but also from asymptomatic fish, usually in mixed infections with motile Aeromonas or infections with motile Aeromonas or infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV). While Y. ruckeri isolates associated with mortalities belonged to the serotype O1 (subgroup a), those isolated from asymtomatic fish corresponded to serotype O3. Two strains of IPNV (serotype Ab) were isolated in farm B, which represents the first viral agent detected in Portuguese aquaculture. Qualitative and quantitative differences in microbial load were observed between cultured and wild fish. No notifiable bacterial or viral pathogens were detected in any of the feral species studied.

Notes: Abstract. During two summers in Portugal, intertidal fishes were captured with anaesthetic at four sites along the Portuguese Atlantic West Coast. They were examined for the blood parasite Haemogregarina bigemina, for other haematozoa, and for haematophagous eetoparasitcs. Haemogregarina bigemina was found only in biennies, Lipophrys pholis (L.) and Coryphoblennius galerita (L.), and infections in these fish were similar. No other haematozoa were detected. Ectoparasites found attached to biennies included haematophagous praniza larvae of the isopod Gnathia maxillaris and a single leech. Gametocytes like those of fish haemogregarines were found in the anterior hindgut of 25% of pranizae and one contained gametoeytes and stages resembling early oocysts. The leech showed none of these stages. It is concluded that gnathiid pranizae should be considered as possible vectors of H. bigemina in Portugal.
