    Notes: Two viruses were isolated from cultured sole, Solea senegalensis, and wild blackspot sea bream, Pagellus bogaraveo, and preliminarily characterized as lymphocystis disease viruses (LCDVs). Viral isolates were characterized by morphological, biochemical and biophysical properties. In addition, the susceptibility of four fish cell lines was also tested. LCDV isolates developed cytopathic effects on the SAF-1 cell line at 5 and 6 days post-infection and reached titres of 106 TCID50 mL−1. The antigenic and structural protein analysis of the two new LCDV isolates showed identical profiles to that obtained for LCDV strain Leetown NFH (ATCC VR-342), used as a reference viral strain, and for an LCDV isolate collected from gilt-head sea bream, Sparus aurata, cultured in southern Spain. Molecular confirmation was performed by polymerase chain reaction. Specific primers for LCDV produced a 270-bp DNA fragment, the expected size for LCDV.

    Notes: A comparative bacteriological and virological survey was conducted in two fish farms in the North of Portugal. The fish species examined included cultured rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), and brown trout, Salmo trutta L., as well as wild fish captured near both facilities. The microbial load in the internal organs of apparently healthy fish was nonitored over a year, an all the disease problems occurring during this period were investigated. Although both farms presented intermediate levels of infection(30–40% infected fish), farm B showed the poorest microbiological quality since constant but low mortalities were observed throughout the year. Flavobacterium and Psedomonas-Xanthomonas were the predominant bacterial groups, comprising around 40–50% of the isolates from each farm. In farm B, members of the Enterobacteriaceae and mortile Aeromonas also showed significant prevalence (about 20%). The only outbreak of a notifiable disease was an occurrence of furunculosis, caused by Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmoncida, in farm A. However, Yersinia ruckeri was isolated not only from diseased fish, but also from asymptomatic fish, usually in mixed infections with motile Aeromonas or infections with motile Aeromonas or infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV). While Y. ruckeri isolates associated with mortalities belonged to the serotype O1 (subgroup a), those isolated from asymtomatic fish corresponded to serotype O3. Two strains of IPNV (serotype Ab) were isolated in farm B, which represents the first viral agent detected in Portuguese aquaculture. Qualitative and quantitative differences in microbial load were observed between cultured and wild fish. No notifiable bacterial or viral pathogens were detected in any of the feral species studied.

    Notes: Abstract. In this report, the authors describe the evolution of an ulcerative disease that occurred during July and August 1986 in cultured juvenile turbot, Scophthalmus maximus (L.), in northwestern Spain. The daily fish mortality ranged from less than 1 to 7·5%, and the total of cumulative losses were 23·2%. The start of the epizootic was closely associated with a sudden increase of water temperature to values higher than 20·C. Peaks of mortality were observed during the development of the disease. Affected turbot showed erratic swimming, respiratory distress and inappetence. The lesions began as white discoloured foci on the skin, operculum, and base of dorsal and caudal fins which could suffer a total destruction of the interradial membrane. In an advanced stage of this condition, the epithelial surface of the centre of the lesions sloughed off and shallow and haemorrhagic ulcers were produced. Three distinct areas were observed in the ulcerative lesions with a clear predominance of different microorganisms: (1) a peripheric pale zone invaded by a ciliate protozoan resembling Cryptocaryon spp.; (2) an intermediate greyish-dark area containing large numbers of fastidious myxobacteria which failed to grow in culture media; and (3) a central haemorrhagic zone where we have isolated two halophilic, urease positive Vibrio strains (closely related to V. carchariae). No microbial involvement was detected in the internal organs of affected fish. The virulence assays conducted with the Vibrio strains failed to reproduce the signs of the disease, either by intraperitoneal inoculation or by water challenge after skin abrasion. The use of alternate baths of formalin/malachite green and nitrofurazone resulted in an effective therapy to control the mortalities.
