Notes: [Auszug] We suggest that sufficient material is now available (estimates of a fall of more than one ton have been made) for this meteorite to serve as a source of a "standard meteorite" powder of the same type as the standard rocks provided by the US Geological Survey. Interlaboratory comparisons of ...

Notes: Abstract Y-, Dy-, and Gd-doped neodymium (Nd) superconductors (RE0.1Nd0.9Ba2-Cu3Oy) exhibited sharp resistivity transitions at 92 K. DC susceptibility measurements gave a common curve with diamagnetic onsets at 93 K and transitions complete at ≈50 K. Lattice constants for an assumed orthorhombic structure were calculated from X-ray diffraction measurements. These values were used to create a simulated diffraction pattern with 2θ values and relative intensities that agreed well with observed values. Oxygen contents determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis, ranged from 14.7 to 15.1±0.1 wt%(6.59≤y in O y ≤6.73). This range of oxygen content for YBa2Cu3O y gives ≈50–60 K transitions in marked contrast to the 92 K (midpoint) values for the materials of this study.

Notes: Abstract Derivative activation analysis is a technique in which the element or chemical entity to be determined is either replaced or complexed in a preirradiation chemical procedure with another element for which neutron activation analysis has an intrinsically higher sensitivity. Although the technique has many potential applications, the literature of the field is very limited. Examples of recent applications in our laboratory include: determination of P in natural waters, biological reference standards, brain tissue, rocks and coal; determination of Ni in a stony meteorite; determination of T1 in solutions; and speciation of oxygen (e.g., hydroxyl and carbonyl moieties) in coal via 14 MeV neutron activation.

Notes: Abstract Laser microprobe mass spectrometry (LMMS) detection limits for mercury have been determined using mercury-doped Spurr's tissue embedding medium. Actual mercury concentrations were confirmed via INAA. Procedures have also been developed to measure lithium and indium concentrations in thin films of polymerized Spurr's samples via PIGE and PIXE. These elements are currently being investigated as laser power density internal standards in the analysis of human tissue for studies of trace element involvement in neurological diseases.

Notes: Abstract Chronic lead (Pb) intoxication has been linked to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Lead, like many heavy elements, tends to accumulate in bone. PIXE is a powerful analytical tool which permits the determination of Pb at the μg/g level without requiring sample digestion. GFAAS is one of the most sensitive methods for the determination of Pb and is capable of determining ng/g levels in solution. For bone analyses by GFAAS, sample dissolution and a matrix modifier are required. Rib bone samples were analyzed for Pb by PIXE and GFAAS. IAEA Animal Bone (H-5) was used as a secondary standard for Pb with both methods to ensure accuracy. The range of Pb concentrations in human rib bone was 1.4–11.5 μg/g for the trabecular surface by PIXE, 1.3–45 μg/g for the cortical surface by PIXE, and 1.54–11.75 μg/g for whole bone by GFAAS. No significant difference (p〉0.05) was found for AD versus control for either surface or for whole bone.

Notes: Abstract Oxygen and fluorine have been simultaneously determined by 14-MeV INAA in samples containing boron. Both boron and fluorine can cause serious interferences in the determination of oxygen. The fluorine and boron interference corrections for oxygen determination have been determined to be 0.43±0.01 and 0.0832±0.0017 apparent g oxygen per g of fluorine and boron, respectively, for our system. Boron can be determined in the same sample by a second irradiation. Mutual interferences have been evaluated and the procedure has been applied to NIST SRM and several other compounds.

Notes: Abstract The possible association of dental amalgam surface exposure, brain mercury (Hg) levels, and pathological markers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the brain is the subject of an on-going study in our laboratory. Two radiochemical neutron activation analysis methods and the use of instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) with Compton suppression spectrometry have been evaluated for improving our INAA Hg detection limit (2.8±0.6 ng/g, wet-weight basis) in human tissue. Large numbers of samples dictated the use of a purely instrumental method or rapid, simple radiochemical separations. Human brain tissues and NIST biological standards were analyzed using a precipitation of Hg2Cl2, a solvent extraction utilizing sodium diethyldithiocarbomate, conventional INAA, and INAA with Compton suppression. The radiochemical precipitation of Hg2Cl2 proved to be the most useful method for use in our study because it provided a simultaneous, quantitative determination of silver (Ag) and a Hg detection limit in brain tissue of 1.6±0.1 ng/g (wet-weight basis).

Notes: Abstract The technique of neutron activation analysis (NAA) was first demonstrated in papers by Georg Hevesy and Hilde Levi in 1936 and 1938. Applications of NAA to biological tissues did not appear in the literature until approximately a decade later, when analysts obtained access to high flux nuclear fission reactors. NAA studies of trace element imbalances in specific diseases developed rapidly in the 1980s with the availability of affordable high resolution, high efficiency, solid-state gamma-ray detectors. A brief history of NAA as related to trace element analyses of human tissues is presented and recent NAA studies of relationships of elemental imbalances to the etiology or pathogenesis of selected diseases are reviewed.
