Description: Both historical and idealized climate model experiments are performed with a variety of Earth system models of intermediate complexity (EMICs) as part of a community contribution to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fifth Assessment Report. Historical simulations start at 850 CE and continue through to 2005. The standard simulations include changes in forcing from solar luminosity, Earth's orbital configuration, CO2, additional greenhouse gases, land use, and sulphate and volcanic aerosols. In spite of very different modelled pre-industrial global surface air temperatures, overall 20th century trends in surface air temperature and carbon uptake are reasonably well simulated when compared to observed trends. Land carbon fluxes show much more variation between models than ocean carbon fluxes, and recent land fluxes appear to be slightly underestimated. It is possible that recent modelled climate trends or climate–carbon feedbacks are overestimated resulting in too much land carbon loss or that carbon uptake due to CO2 and/or nitrogen fertilization is underestimated. Several one thousand year long, idealized, 2 × and 4 × CO2 experiments are used to quantify standard model characteristics, including transient and equilibrium climate sensitivities, and climate–carbon feedbacks. The values from EMICs generally fall within the range given by general circulation models. Seven additional historical simulations, each including a single specified forcing, are used to assess the contributions of different climate forcings to the overall climate and carbon cycle response. The response of surface air temperature is the linear sum of the individual forcings, while the carbon cycle response shows a non-linear interaction between land-use change and CO2 forcings for some models. Finally, the preindustrial portions of the last millennium simulations are used to assess historical model carbon-climate feedbacks. Given the specified forcing, there is a tendency for the EMICs to underestimate the drop in surface air temperature and CO2 between the Medieval Climate Anomaly and the Little Ice Age estimated from palaeoclimate reconstructions. This in turn could be a result of unforced variability within the climate system, uncertainty in the reconstructions of temperature and CO2, errors in the reconstructions of forcing used to drive the models, or the incomplete representation of certain processes within the models. Given the forcing datasets used in this study, the models calculate significant land-use emissions over the pre-industrial period. This implies that land-use emissions might need to be taken into account, when making estimates of climate–carbon feedbacks from palaeoclimate reconstructions.

Notes: Summary Several multi-stage infusion regimens and a computer controlled exponentially decreasing infusion regimen were evaluated in twelve patients undergoing head and neck surgery or neurosurgery. Thiopentone dosage was based on the mean of pharmacokinetic parameter values from the literature and adjusted for each patient's lean body mass in order to rapidly achieve a predetermined plasma thiopentone concentration of 15 or 20 µg/ml in the period following the initial bolus dose to induce anaesthesia. Anaesthesia was satisfactory in all cases. Plasma thiopentone concentrations were maintained between 10–20 µg/ml during infusion in the five patients who received either a four or five stage infusion and in the six patients who received the exponential infusion, but not in the single patient who received a two-stage infusion. The mean recovery time was 111 min. The plasma concentrations of total and unbound thiopentone at awakening showed little intersubject variability, despite considerable differences in total dose and duration of infusion, suggesting the absence of acute tolerance to the drug. Plasma clearance of total thiopentone correlated strongly with calculated lean body mass and to a lesser extent with total body weight suggesting that lean body mass, in particular, should be an accurate predictor of thiopentone maintenance dose requirements. This study shows that it is feasible to use thiopentone as a primary anaesthetic agent during surgery by administering the drug either as an exponentially decreasing infusion or as an infusion comprising 4 or 5 stepwise decreasing rates.

Notes: The effect of feedlot runoff on the environmental quality of the Cottonwood River in east central Kansas was evaluated by analysis of community structure of benthic macroinvertebrates using the species diversity index, (d). The benthic fauna along the study reach was dominated by mayflies, caddisflies, midges, riffle beetles, and the pelecypod, Sphaerium. Sixty-five taxa were identified during the study; the benthic fauna was most abundant during the 1968–69 segment of the study. However, the mean 3 per station indicated the river was subject to moderate environmental stress, and 3's of those stations immediately downstream from feedlots were significantly lower than the 3 at the control station. There was a significant increase in d's during the 1970–71 segment of the study, following the closing of two feedlots. The results indicate periodic feedlot runoff had a continuing adverse affect on the environmental quality of the river, but recovery was rapid as the organic load on the river was reduced.

Notes: We discuss trends in residual stress as a function of film thickness, growth temperature, and substrate orientation for GaN/AlN/6H–SiC heterostructures. Films are mostly compressive for samples less than about 0.7 μm thick, are tensile up to about 2 μm, then abruptly become less tensile with stress values near 1 kbar thereafter. We interpret this as a successive relief of lattice mismatch and thermal stresses culminating in a catastrophic relief by unknown mechanisms at moderate thicknesses. These data indicate that relaxation processes in these heterostructures are not as well understood as previously supposed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Temperature-dependent time-resolved photoluminescence measurements were performed on GaN film/AlN buffer/6H–SiC substrate heterostructures grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The overlying GaN layers were under tension, as estimated from the free A exciton (FEA) position. The recombination lifetimes were determined for the FEA and for the neutral-donor-bound exciton (D0X). We observed that the recombination lifetime for the FEA has the same value of 40–50 ps in all the layers, whereas the recombination time for the D0X varies for different samples. We observed that the recombination lifetimes for D0X have a clear dependence on the position of FEA, i.e., the recombination lifetime increases with decreasing strain in the layers. We discuss the results in term of the hole states involved in the donor-bound exciton recombination. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Low-temperature reflectance data on epitaxial GaN thin-film samples covering the widest range of tensile and compressive stress (−3.8–3.5 kbar) thus far explicitly show the nonlinear behavior of the B–A and C–A splittings versus the energy of the A exciton. Lineshape ambiguities that hindered previous interpretations have been resolved with reciprocal-space analysis, allowing us to obtain band parameters such as ΔSO=17.0±1meV with increased confidence. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A new form of light emitting devices called BICE (bias induced color-tunable emitter) is reported. It is a voltage controlled multiwavelength semiconductor light emitter based on the bias dependent injection and collection of electrons and holes in quantum wells. In this letter, two-terminal dual wavelength BICE operation is demonstrated. It exhibits coaxial optical output, a large separation between emission wavelengths ((approximately-greater-than)500 A(ring)) and an emission contrast ratio ranging from 4:1 to 1:33 at 77 K.

Notes: Summary Tritium-labelled PGF2α was administered i.v. into rats of varying ages (2, 4, 6 weeks and adult). Urine was collected and assayed for radioactive products by thin-layer-chromatography. Results showed a distinctly different urinary profile between the 2-week-old and the adult rat. While the urinary pattern from the 2-week-old rat gave a single less polar product than PGF2α, the pattern from the adult rat gave products more polar than PGF2α. Urine from the 4- and 6-week-old rats gave a mixture of these types of products. These results indicate that some prostaglandin catabolic pathway (likely the ω-oxidative system) is activated in vivo within the 4–6-week postnatal period in the rat.
