Notes: Abstract The structure of the set of closed two-sided ideals in aC*-algebraU with identity is described by means of a topology on the set ∂e K of extreme points of the state spaceK ofU. Recent results of Alfsen, Andersen, Combes, Perdrizet, Wils, and others have shown that such a topology can be defined on the set ∂e K of extreme points of an arbitrary compact convex subset of a locally convex Hausdorff topological vector space. The structure of the set of closed left ideals in aC*-algebraU with identity can also be described by means of a set of subsets of the set ∂e K of extreme points of its state spaceK. Akemann, Giles, and Kummer showed that this formed a more general structure than a topology which was called aq-topology. In this paper it is shown that for a reasonably wide class of compact convex subsetsK of locally convex Hausdorff topological vector spaces such aq-topology can also be defined on ∂e K and that it shares many of the properties of theq-topology defined forC*-algebras. The methods used depend strongly upon recent results of Alfsen and Shultz on the spectral theory of affine functions on compact convex sets.

Notes: [Auszug] The volcanoes studied here span 1,500 km of arc length and two very different tectonic settings. In Java, oceanic lithosphere of the Indian plate is subducting beneath Eurasia at a rate7 of 6 cm yrl (Fig. 1). Flores is situated in an arc-continent collision zone and the Australian continental ...

Notes: [Auszug] We report that ICV administration of GLP-1 reduces food intake in fasted rats, with greater effect at higher doses (Fig. Ib). ICV injection of GLP-1 in rats at the beginning of the dark (feeding) phase also results in a profound decrease in feeding (Fig. la). When administered intraperitoneally up ...

Notes: Abstract Recent work of Davies and Lewis has shown how partially ordered vector spaces provide a setting in which the operational approach to statistical physical systems may be studied. In this paper, certain physically relevant classes of operations are identified in the abstract framework, some of their properties are derived and applications to the Von Neumann algebra model for quantum theory are discussed.

Notes: Abstract This paper continues the study started in [13] where classes of operations were investigated in the partially ordered vector space approach to the theory of statistical physical systems. In this approach the set of states is represented by a norm closed generating coneK in a complete base norm space (V, K, B) and the set of operations is represented by the setP of positive norm non-increasing linear operators onV. In actual physical experiments it is usually the case that only certain subsets ofK are available and it is supposed that the set Γ(K) of such subsets is the set of split faces ofK. The properties of two important classes of operation are examined. The first classP of strong operations has the property that each member leaves every element of Γ(K) invariant and therefore can be measured in every restricted situation. The second classP P of pure operations has the property above and also sends pure states into pure states. A study is made, in terms of the structure of Γ(K), of when such operations are physically relevant. The paper ends with an examination of Γ(K),P, P P in the Von Neumann algebra model.

Notes: Abstract A generalization of the group algebra of a locally compact group is studied, by expressing the group algebra of a central group extension as the direct sum of closed *-ideals each one of which is isomorphic to such a “twisted” group algebra. In particular, the representation theory of such algebras is associated with the theory of projective representations by studying the representations of the group algebra of the group extension and the associated unitary representations of the group extension.
