    Notes: Abstract Using a recently developedin situ multiprobe the redox development in the water column of warm-monomictic Lake Kinneret was investigated during three annual cycles. During the time when sulfide release into the meta- and hypolimnion is initiated, our measurements show a linear relationship, close to the thermodynamic function, between the platinum electrode potential and the amount of sulfide produced by the sulfate reducing bacteria. A change of this relationship during summer stratification coincides with the bloom of the phototrophic sulfur bacteriumChlorobium phaeobacteroides.

    Notes: Abstract The individual influence of sulfate reducing and brown phototrophic sulfur bacteria from Lake Kinneret on the metalimnetic redox conditions was investigated by simulating the hydrochemical and microbiological conditions in a specially designed chemostat. The results show a strong correlation between measured redox values and the prevailing hydrogen sulfide concentration leading to a linear relationship. Changes in this relationship allowed differentiation between the on-going microbial processes, sulfate reduction and sulfide oxidation. The comparison ofin vitro andin situ redox values shows that the results of the simulation experiments agree with the data previously measured in the metalimnion of Lake Kinneret.

    Notes: Abstract In warm-monomictic Lake Kinneret, wind-induced internal waves with amplitudes of up to 10 meters are common during April October. This study was aimed to follow the horizontal and vertical transport of resuspended particles due to internal wave activity using fluorescently-dyed sediment particles (lake sediments and lyophilized algal cells) as tracers. Color-coded (5 colors) tracers were deployed along a transect perpendicular to the shore, and their dispersion was followed by recovery of labeled particles in sediment traps and in bottom sediment samples using epifluorescence microscopy. Wind-induced internal seiches as the driving force for resuspension were followed using a thermistor chain and a current velocity profiler. Examination of sediment trap and bottom sediment samples indicated particle transport from the hypolimnion to the epilimnion that could be linked to the seiche activity. Horizontal transport of particles was most distinct for littoral sediments whereby particles placed at 5 m depth were exposed to a strong long shore transport.

    Notes: Abstract Different factors which interactively control the flux of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) at the sediment-water interface (SWI) of Lake Kinneret were studied seasonally. The influence of pH, Eh and microbial activity on SRP flux at the SWI was investigated by manipulating the conditions in the overlying water of intact sediment cores. The calculated diffusive SRP flux out of the sediment was lower in cores sampled during winter and spring than during the period of amixis. Potential SRP release, as measured in the absence of microbial activity, was strongly enhanced upon the transition from oxic to anoxic conditions indicating P release from iron(III)-bound phosphorus. In spring and summer cores, an enhanced SRP flux from sediments at pH 7 in comparison to pH 8 indicated P release from carbonate-bound P which sedimented previously as result of high pH values during the algal spring bloom. Microbial uptake at the SWI was the most important sink for SRP and no net-flux occured under oxic conditions. The higher net-flux of P under anoxic conditions was linked to carbon limitation of the bacteria at the SWI.

    Notes: Abstract Sixty km2 of the southern Hula Valley (northern Israel) peat lands were flooded in 1994 as part of the Hula Valley Restoration Project. The small, shallow lake (110 ha, mean depth 〈 1 m) and network of ca. 90 km of canals created were designed to ameliorate problems (e.g., underground fires, soil subsidence, increased nutrient loading downstream to Lake Kinneret) resulting from drying the Lake Hula wetlands in the 1950s. This new wetland area now serves as the focus for developing eco-tourism in northern Israel. The initial development of this new ecosystem has been followed closely by a multi-disciplinary team of researchers, with an emphasis on water quality in the new lake and the potential impact of the project on Lake Kinneret. Here we report an overview of developments in general water chemistry of Lake Agmon during its first three years (1994–1996). Water quality in Agmon was within general expectations for a shallow lake situated on peat. The first year of Agmon was characterized by the heavy influence of stream and drainage inflows with high pH, alkalinity, turbidity and electrical conductivity and high concentrations of sulfate and total dissolved solids. By the third year, however, many “in lake” processes (e.g., nutrient cycling and algal and macrophytic production) were well-developed and thus strongly affected lake water quality. Excessive phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations in the lake have led to hypertrophy, characterized by low dissolved oxygen concentrations and prolific blooms of nuisance algae. The management of this new ecosystem in the near future will require persistent, and innovative measures.

    Notes: Summary Thin section electron microscopy of Actinomycin D treated Tetrahymena cells and amphibian oocytes (Xenopus laevis, Triturus alpestris) reveal no reduction in the central granules in the nuclear pore complexes. Possible reasons for the diversity between these results and earlier observations using negatively stained isolated nuclear envelopes from the same objects are discussed. The results clearly show that the presence of central granules within the nuclear pores does neither depend on nuclear RNA synthesis nor does indicate nucleocytoplasmic RNA transport. This conclusion leads to a reconsideration of the nature of the central granule. The functioning of the central granule of the nuclear pore complexes is further discussed in connection with recent studies on the ultrastructure of various types of cisternal pores.
