Notes: Abstract Data on benthic infauna from 4 permanent stations in Puget Sound off Seattle, USA, collected during 1963–1964, 1967, and 1969, revealed considerable stability in numbers of species and specimens and in diversity within stations among sampling dates. The species composition of the faunal assemblages also remained rather constant during the period of investigation, but the relative dominance among the numerically important species varied somewhat. Biomass data did not differ significantly in 1964 and 1969, but the 1967 data were considerably lower at all stations.

Notes: [Auszug] During investigations of the esterolytic activities of tissues of the alimentary tract of pigs2, using a pH-stat method, it was shown that the fundic mucosa had no ability to hydrolyse triolein, which is a typical lipase substrate. This confirms the findings of Cherry and Crandall3 and of ...

Notes: Single crystals of mixed methyl-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-aminopropanoate (MAP): 2-methyl-4-nitroaniline (MNA) have been grown from solution using a 40:60 mixture of ethanol and ethyl acetate. Formation of an equimolar complex is confirmed by x-ray diffraction studies. The complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21. The lattice parameters are a=6.9196(±0.005) A(ring); b=7.673(±0.008) A(ring); c=18.554(±0.001) A(ring); and β=92.547(±0.006)0. b axis is the unique twofold axis and there are two molecules per unit cell. The molecules stack along the b axis with MAP atop MNA atop MAP. Details of the molecular orientation are given. The Raman spectra also indicate that the parent molecules are not disturbed in the process of crystallization. The second harmonic generation efficiency of the new material for 1064 nm laser radiation is observed to be the same as that of MAP but lower than that of MNA. The latter is attributed to the absorption at 532 nm in the mixed crystal. The melting point determined by differential scanning calorimetry is 104.30 °C.

Notes: Abstract  Maize (Zea mays L.) callus cultures cannot use mannose as a sole carbohydrate source, but can utilize fructose for that purpose. Phosphomannose isomerase (PMI) can convert mannose to fructose. Transgenic maize plants were obtained by selecting polyethylene glycol (PEG)-mediated transformed protoplasts on mannose (20 g/l) containing medium. Transgenic calluses and plants carrying the PMI structural gene, manA, were able to convert mannose to fructose. The PEG-mediated protoplast transformation frequency was 0.06%. Stable transformation was confirmed by PCR, PMI activity, germination tests, and by histochemical staining with 5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl-β-D-glucuronide (X-Gluc). Stable integration of the transgenes into the maize genome was demonstrated in T1 and T2 plants. Results indicate that the mannose selection system can be used for maize PEG-mediated protoplast transformation.

Notes: Abstract When a 1∶1 weight mixture of (2,-4-dinitrophenyl)-L-alanine (DPA) and 2-methyl-4-nitroaniline (MNA) is dissolved in a 50∶50 volume mixture of ethyl acetate and hexane, two types of crystals were observed on slow evaporation. In the first stage of crystallization, light-yellow plates of MNA measuring up to 25 mm×5 mm×1 mm were formed, which belong to the triclinic space group P1 with lattice parameters a=0.7621 (3) nm, b=0.795 2(5) nm, c=0.8200 (2) nm, α=111.84(2)°, β= 93.76(2)°, γ=116.84(3)°, Z=2. The volume of the unit cell containing two molecules is 361.9(1)×10−3 nm3. The powder SHG efficiency of the triclinic polymorph (MNA(T)) is about the same as that of the monoclinic MNA(M). The Raman spectrum of the new crystal is similar to that of MNA(M) crystallized from the vapour phase or solution, except for the change in the intensity of a few bands. The DSC data show minor differences in the melting points and specific heats for the two phases. The second stage of crystallization resulted in the formation of orange-yellow coloured crystals of the DPA:MNA complex, in the monoclinic space group P21 with lattice parameters a =0.6876(1) nm, b=0.7621(3) nm, c=1.7626(4) nm, β=96.62(2)°, V=917.5 ×10−3 nm3, Z=2 for C16H17N5O8. The Raman spectrum of DPA:MNA consists of bands from both DPA and MNA. The complex melts at 138(1)°C with a specific heat of 25.3(4) cal g−1 according to the DSC measurements. The powder SHG efficiency is nearly the same as that of methyl-(2,4-dinitriphenyl)-aminoproanoate (MAP).

Notes: Abstract Single crystals of LiF containing voids and of NaCl containing Na2SO4 precipitates were pressurized to introduce dislocations in the vicinities of the discontinuities and subsequently compressed along 〈100〉 at room temperature. The yield stress was raised in both materials; additionally, in LiF discontinuous yielding and easy glide were suppressed and work hardening rate increased by the pressurization-induced dislocations. Following pressurization at 0.85 GN m−2, for example, the 0.1 % shear flow stress of LiF was doubled to ∼ 4 MN m−2 and stage II work hardening rate quadrupled to ∼ 180 MN m−2. Pressurization of NaCl above 0.6 GN m−2 resulted in an increase in the 0.1 % flow stress from ∼ 1.2 to ∼ 2.0 MN m−2. If the slip bands in LiF were initiated by a precompression, pressurization prevented the broadening of these fresh slip bands during subsequent plastic flow. Deformation now took place at a higher stress both in LiF and NaCl. These effects resemble in some ways latent hardening in that oblique as well as conjugate dislocation intersections must take place to continue the deformation. In contrast to latent hardening data, the strain hardening rate was increased in LiF and was approximately proportional to the pressurization-induced dislocation density. This ratio, 5 to 6 dyne per dislocation, is in fair agreement with two sets of independent calculations reported by Gilman and Johnston. The results suggest, therefore, that in the present case also hardening may be due to defects left in the wakes of pressurization-induced moving dislocations.
