    Notes: A procedure for the calculation of the starting flow around a sphere in a uniform stream is presented. The flow field is simulated by a flow of ideal fluid with embedded vorticity. With the assumption that the flow remains symmetric, the vorticity field is approximated by a number of discrete circular line vortices. The image vortices to satisfy the boundary condition for the normal component of velocity on the surface of the sphere are determined by Butler's sphere theorem. The Stokes streamfunction is used for the field description. The motion of vortices is tracked by the vortex-in-cell method, the cells being formed by square grids.

    Notes: A brief description of distributed memory MIMD computers, and in particular, a transputer based computing surface, is presented. The factors to be considered in their application to computationally intensive CFD problems are discussed with reference to the discrete vortex method used for the solution of separated flow about bluff bodies. Three parallel algorithms for its implementation are presented, and the results are discussed in the context of the speed-ups obtained using up to sixty-four parallel processors.

    Notes: A new finite-element based method of calculating non-linear wave loads on offshore structures in extreme seas is presented in this paper. The diffraction wave field is modelled using Stokes wave theory developed to second order. Wave loads and free surface elevations are obtained for fixed surface-piercing structures by solving a boundary value problem for the second-order velocity potential. Special attention has been given to the radiation condition for the second-order diffraction field. Results are presented for three test examples, the vertical cylinders of Kim and Yue and of Chakrabarti, and an elliptic cylinder. These results demonstrate that early problems with the application of second-order theory arising from inadequate radiation conditions have been overcome.

    Notes: Four methods of implementing Morison wave-force calculations for offshore tubular-jacket structures on distributed-memory parallel hardware are presented The Morison equation is given and the method by which it is used to calculate wave forces on members of an offshore structure is briefly described. A brief background to parallel computing and a description of the transputer hardware and software available to the authors is also given.     Notes: Jacket structures have many sub-sea appurtenances attached to them. For example, a typical jacket structure has hundreds of sacrificial anodes attached to its members. The fluid loading of these structures is calculated using Morison's formula. The force coefficients used in the equation are based on experiments carried out, for the most part, on single cylinders in laboratories in ideal flow. There are very few experimental data available for the fluid loading of cylinders with appurtenances. Moreover, it is not possible to calculate theoretically the loading on such configurations in flows of practical interest using approaches such as the finite element method. However, appurtenances can contribute significantly to the overall loading on a structure. This paper presents the preliminary theoretical work that has been carried out as part of a programme to establish a rational method for estimating the fluid loading on tubular members with appurtenances.

    Description: This paper presents a comparison between theory and experiment for the in-line forces on cylinders of general cross-section in planar oscillatory flows of small amplitude. The theoretical analysis evaluates corrections to the standard inviscid inertial force at low Keulegan-Carpenter numbers which arise from the presence of viscous laminar boundary layers and from the development of vortex shedding. The boundary-layer contribution due to both skin friction and displacement effects is calculated to first order in the Stokes parameter β−½. The contribution to the in-line force from separation and vortex shedding, for which the results presented only apply to sharp-edged bodies, is taken from previous work on vortex shedding from isolated edges using the discrete vortex modelling technique. The resulting force has components both in phase with the fluid acceleration (inertia) and in phase with the velocity (drag). The theoretical results are compared to measurements taken in a U-tube water channel on a number of cylinders of different cross-section including circular cylinders and sharp-edged sections. The comparisons suggest that the theory is valid for Keulegan–Carpenter numbers below about 3 and for moderately high values of the β parameter. © 1985, Cambridge University Press.     Description: Hydrodynamic damping of floating bodies is due mainly to wave radiation and viscous damping. The latter is particularly important in controlling those responses of the body for which the wave damping is small. The roll response of ship hulls near resonance in beam seas is an example of this. The present paper applies a discrete vortex method as a local solution to model vortex shedding from the bilges of a barge hull of rectangular cross-section and hence provides an analytic method for predicting its coupled motions in three degrees of freedom, including the effects of the main component of viscous damping. The method provides a frequency-domain solution satisfying the full linearized boundary conditions on the free surface. © 1988, Cambridge University Press. All rights reserved.
