Notes: Abstract Using over 2200 ozonesonde ascents, published byHering andBorden [1]–[5] and byDütsch et al. [6], [7], the average vertical distribution of the ozone mixing ratio is found for different latitudes and for different seasons up to a height of 30 km. The method by which the ozone formed at great heights in low latitudes becomes concentrated in the lower stratosphere of high latitudes is discussed, and the meridional circulation theory is strongly suggested.

Notes: [Auszug] WITH the return of winter the following physicophysiological question once more calls for solution:—Very hot but dry weather may be tolerable, while moderately hot but very damp weather may be almost unbearable. The explanation of this in terms of cooling by evaporation is known to everyone. ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN NATURE of March 8, Dr. Slater, Price refers to two new types of photometric density measurers. Therein he strongly advocates the use of a selenium cell for such purposes, rather than the photo-electric cell containing one of the alkali metals. Recently Dr. Toy and Mr. Rawling kindly allowed ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN the issue of NATURE for April 5 we directed attention to the limit of accuracy which is imposed on all methods of photographic photometry, by lack of uniformity in the manufacture, or development of photographic plates. In most cases these errors are much larger than any other errors, and, ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN NATURE of November 17, p. 725, Dr. Lockyer puts forward a suggestion as to the physics of the formation of “mammato-cumulus” cloud, namely, that it is formed by descent of moist air into colder air below, when there is a reversed vertical temperature gradient, in the same way that “cumulus” ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN NATURE of April 27, p. 644, Prof. R. W. Wood again raises the hopes of astronomers that it may be possible to obtain an extension of the ultra-violet spectra of the sun or stars by going to a station near the pole at the end of the winter. He assumes—as most people have done—that the ozone ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE use of optical wedges in photometry is so convenient and accurate that they are now being largely employed, but their use is, at present, mostly confined to the visible region. Dr. Toy (Phil. Mag., 1920) showed that wedges of neutral grey gelatine between quartz plates could be used down to ...

Notes: [Auszug] PREVIOUS estimates of the height of the ozone in the atmosphere, including our own measurements at Arosa1, agreed in giving the centre of gravity of the ozone layer at about 40–50 km. above sea-level. These estimates were based on measurements of the intensity of the spectrum of ...

Notes: [Auszug] I THINK that it is desirable that I should add a note of warning to Mr. Sreenivasan's letter under the above title in NATURE of Oct. 27, as there are two or three points about the ozone values that would probably not be familiar to Mr. Sreenivasan, which make it doubtful whether the relation ...
