    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé On a déterminé les répartitions des tensions et des déformations au voisinage de fissures dans des tôles a caractéristiques diverses d'écrouissage, pour le cas de traction uniaxiale. Les déformations dans la région plastique a la pointe de la fissure varient approximativement en raison inverse de la distance de la fissure. On a dérivé des expressions pour l'énergie dissipée en déformation plastique pour les sollicitations tant statiques que cycliques.
    Abstract: Zusammenfassung Es werden bei einachsiger Zugbeanspruchung die Spannungs — und Verformungsverteilungen bei Anrissen in Blechen aus Werkstoffen mi.t verschiedenen V erfestigungseigenschaften festgestellt. Die Verformungen im plastischen Gebiet an der Anrisspitze verändern sich etwa umgekehrt mit deco Abstand vom Anriss. Es werden Ausdrücke abgeleitet fur die durch plastische Verformung bei statischer bzw. schwellender Beanspruchung aufgenommene Arbeit.
    Notes: Abstract The stress and strain distributions around cracks in sheet materials having various work-hardening characieristics are obtained for uniaxial loading. The strains in the plastic region at the crack tip tend to vary inversely as the distance from the crack. Expressions are derived for the energy absorbed in plastic deformation during both static and cyclic loadings.

Un schéma de la fissuration progressive sous chargement cyclique est propesé, qui se base sur les differéntes formes adoptées par l'extrémité d'une fissure selon que celle-ci est sollicitée ou non; ce schéma permet une prédiction des vitesses de fissuration progressive sous chargement cyclique qui se rapproche de celles établies par détermination expérimentale.
    Abstract: Zusammenfassung Bestehende, experimentelle Angaben über die Ermüdungsrissvergrösserung werden zusammengefasst. Ein auf die verscheidenen mit dem beanspruchten und nicht beanspruchten Riss verbundenen Rissspitzformen gegründetes Modell der Ermüdungsrissvergrösserung wird vorgeschlagen; es ermöglicht Vorhersagen von Ermüdungsrissvergrösserungsgeschwindigkéiten, die sich den aus gewisse Werkstoffe experimentell festgestellten gut zuordnen.
    Notes: Abstract Existing experimental data on fatigue crack growth are summarized. A fatigue crack growth model is proposed, based on the different crack tip geometries of a loaded and unloaded crack; the model leads to predictions of the rates of growth of fatigue cracks, in certain materials, comparable to those determined experimentally.

    Notes: Large cultures of microscopic, unicellular algae have been proposed as a means of maintaining a life-supporting atmosphere in a closed, manned system. To achieve vigorous growth of the algal culture it is necessary to subject individual algae alternately to short periods of high intensity light and darkness. One of the means suggested for obtaining a favorable light-dark sequence for photosynthesis is to cause turbulence in a closed channel on which light is incident. Since light is rapidly attenuated in a dense suspension, there will be illuminated regions adjacent to the channel walls and a dark central core. The random motions of turbulence normal to the direction of flow would move the algae alternately from the illuminated regions to the dark region and back again. This paper indicates a method for analyzing the motion of algae into and out of the illuminated region of a channel formed by flat, parallel, transparent plates, with light incident on the plates. Matching of a probability model with a diffusion model makes it possible to estimate the light-dark sequence which could be achieved by turbulence. The results indicate that favorable sequences by this mechanism are unlikely.

    Notes: The conformational equilibrium constants for a series of 1-alkyl substituted cyclohexanols have been determined using a lanthanide shift reagent, and the results compared with other methods. In comparison to other technique greater preference is shown by the hydroxyl group for the equatorial position. This is rationalized by the effect on the equilibrium of the bulky shift reagent.
