    Description / Table of Contents: Die temperaturprogrammierte Polykondensation von Bisphenol A und Chlormethylphosphorigsäuredichlorid wurde im Probenraum eines NMR-Spektrometers durchgeführt. Aus den Spektren wurden die Momentankonzentrationen der Komponenten und die Strukturen der Zwischenstufen ermittelt und ein kinetisches Schema vorgeschlagen. Durch Lösen von Differentialgleichungen können die Geschwindigkeitskonstanten und die Zunahme des zahlenmittleren Polymerisationsgrades bestimmt werden.
    Notes: The temperature-programmed polycondensation of bisphenol A and chloromethylphosphonic dichloride is carried out in the sample tube of a NMR spectrometer. From the spectra during polycondensation, the instantaneous concentration of components and the intermediate structures can be observed and a kinetic mechanism is proposed. By solving differential equations it is possible to determine the reaction rate constants and the evolution of the number average degree of polycondensation.

    Notes: Polymers with tertiary amino groups were obtained by reaction of chloromethylated polystyrene (CMPS) with 3-alkylaminopropionitriles (2a  -  e). The resulting polymers 3a  -  e were characterized by elemental analyses, IR and 1H NMR spectra. Kinetic investigation showed that the reaction is characterized by two rate constants, the rate change taking place at a conversion of 45-50%. Viscosimetric studies of the hydrochlorides of polymers 3a  -  e in water and methanol showed that they behave as polyelectrolytes only in methanol. The abnormal behaviour of water solutions was explained by hydrolysis reaction. To prove the conclusions on the molecular structures of 3a  -  e and the reactivity of CMPS, a study of the reaction of benzyl chloride with the same amines was performed.

    Description: Instrumental climate observations provide robust records of global land and ocean temperatures during the twentieth century. Unlike for temperature, continuous salinity observations in the surface ocean are scarce prior to 1970, and the magnitude of salinity changes during the twentieth century is largely unknown. Surface ocean salinity is a major component in climate dynamics, as it influences ocean circulation and water mass formation. Here we present an annually resolved reconstruction of salinity variations in the surface waters of the western subtropical North Pacific Ocean since 1873, based on bimonthly records of d18O, Sr/Ca, and U/Ca in a coral from the Ogasawara Islands. The reconstruction indicates that an abrupt regime shift toward fresher surface ocean conditions occurred between 1905 and 1910. Observational atmospheric data suggest that the abrupt freshening was associated with a weakening of the winds that drive the Kuroshio Current system and the associated subtropical gyre circulation. We note that the abrupt early-twentieth-century freshening in the western subtropical North Pacific precedes abrupt climate change in the northern North Atlantic by a few years. The potential for abrupt regime shifts in surface ocean salinity should be considered in climate predictions for the coming decades.

    Description: Near-shore waters along the northwest African margin are characterized by coastal upwelling and represent one of the world's major upwelling regions. Sea surface temperature (SST) records from Moroccan sediment cores, extending back 2500 years, reveal anomalous and unprecedented cooling during the 20th century, which is consistent with increased upwelling. Upwelling-driven SSTs also vary out of phase with millennial-scale changes in Northern Hemisphere temperature anomalies (NHTAs) and show relatively warm conditions during the Little Ice Age and relatively cool conditions during the Medieval Warm Period. Together, these results suggest that coastal upwelling varies with NHTAs and that upwelling off northwest Africa may continue to intensify as global warming and atmospheric CO2 levels increase.
