Permanent discolorations of sheet flooring, and other appearance surfaces made from flexible PVC, are commonly called stains. Resistance to stains is imparted to such surfaces through a four part mechanism which relates directly to plasticizer composition. Benzoate esters of 2,2,4-trimethyl-1, 3-pentanediol have traditionally been used as stain resistant plasticizers, but are available commercially only as complex mixtures with reaction by-products. New products, which are high purity and chemically similar, are shown to have performance attributes. Stain resistance and volatility are improved by the use of high purity derviatives.
