Notes: The cleaner fish Labroides dimidiatus affected the pigmented monogenean parasite Benedenia lolo on the fish Hemigymnus melapterus (Labridae) held in aquaria. The effect of cleaner fish varied with the size class of fish; only small fish [a posteriori size class 〈11.5 cm standard length (LS)] exposed to cleaner fish had fewer monogeneans compared with fish not exposed to cleaner fish. The abundance of monogeneans on large fish (a posteriori size class 〈11.5 cm LS) was not affected by cleaner fish. The size-frequency distributions of monogeneans on both size-classes of H. melapterus were affected by cleaner fish. Fish exposed to cleaner fish had fewer large (〉3 mm) and more small (〈1 mm) monogeneans than fish not exposed to cleaner fish, suggesting cleaner fish selectively removed larger monogeneans. This difference was more pronounced on large fish. In the absence of cleaner fish, small fish had almost as many monogeneans as large fish; they also had more small monogeneans than the large fish, suggesting small fish were more vulnerable to infection by monogeneans than larger fish. This suggests that the cleaner fish L. dimidiatus has the potential to control benedeniine monogeneans on captive fish and highlights the importance of taking into account fish size in studies of the effect of cleaner fish on ectoparasites.

Notes: This study surveyed conditions in the gills of wild marine fish in Tasmania to determine potential interactions between wild and cultured fish. Wild marine fish of 12 species were captured from three Atlantic salmon farm sites and three reference sites around Tasmania. The survey concentrated on three species, red cod, Pseudophycis bachus, sand flathead, Platycephalus bassensis, and jack mackerel, Trachurus declivus. Seventy-six per cent of salmon pens contained wild fish species. The number of species found in a pen ranged from one to nine and the number of individuals ranged from one to 23. Trichodinids were prevalent and occurred on seven of the 13 species examined. Trichodina occurred on the gills of all but one specimen of red cod. Monogenean gill flukes were observed on all three major species sampled and were abundant on sand flathead. Other parasites and conditions observed in the survey included metacercariae of digenean trematodes, epitheliocystis and cysts of unknown origin. Infestations of trichodinids on red cod and monogenean gill flukes on sand flathead were significantly more intense at farm sites than at reference sites. Atlantic salmon sampled at the same time from the farms were only affected by amoebic gill disease and isopods.

Notes: Farmed Southern bluefin tuna (SBT) were examined for parasites. Samples of harvest fish, mortalities and some fish showing clinical signs of disease were investigated. Targeted screening was conducted for a scuticociliate, Uronema nigricans, the myxosporean Kudoa sp. and a sanguinicolid digenean, Cardicola forsteri. General parasitological investigation revealed a diverse parasite community of didymozoid digeneans, two species of copepods, a polyopisthocotylean monogenean and larval cestodes. Targeted screening for U. nigricans exposed a low prevalence, most probably due to a lack of sensitivity in the test method. Few of the parasites examined pose a risk to the health of farmed SBT.

Notes: Abstract Laser Raman spectra of ox tibia and of reconstituted rat tail tendon have been obtained and have been compared with the infrared spectra of calcified tissue and collagen. The most intense Raman bands in the calcified tissue originate from the symmetric phosphate modes; however, several of the backbone and side chain modes of collagen are also apparent. There is some evidence that both proline and phenylalamine in the collagen contribute to the spectrum. The Raman spectrum of reconstituted, collagen was difficult to separate from the fluorescence background. Only six distinct bands could be obtained, divided between peptide and sidechain modes. Differences between reconstituted and calcified collagen spectra may originate from partial denaturation of the former in the laser beam. Other differences seem to be genuine chemical manifestations.

Notes: The Raman spectra of poly-L-hydroxyproline in the solid state and aqueous solution have been obtained. From the spectra, the conformations of the polypeptide in the solid and aqueous solution are found to be the same. Major differences in the spectra between the solid and solution are traced to environmental influences of the pyrrolidine group as indicated by studies of the monomers. The Raman spectra of the imino acids, proline and hydroxyproline, as the dipolar ions, the hydrochlorides, and the sodium salts are also reported.
