Notes: Minimal basis set (STO-3G) calculations on the metallic infinite chain of hydrogen atoms, (-H-)x, performed within the same computational framework as currently used for more realistic model systems, are reported to illustrate the dependence of the RHF energy bands on the summation of exchange contributions. The numerical results show the gradual decay of the density of states at the Fermi level as the number of terms in the exchange lattice sums is increased and rather convincingly verify the predictions of previous formal analyses.

Notes: Abstract  Genetic diversity and structure within a Lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) base collection have been evaluated using allozyme markers. The results obtained from the analysis of wild and cultivated accessions confirm the existence of Andean and Mesoamerican gene pools characterised by specific alleles. Wild and cultivated accessions of the same gene pool are grouped. The Andean natural populations have a very limited geographic distribution between Ecuador and northern Peru. The Mesoamerican wild form extends from Mexico up to Argentina through the eastern side of the Andes. Andean and Mesoamerican cultivated accessions of pantropical distribution contribute substantially to the genetic diversity of the Lima bean base collection. Population genetic parameters, estimated from allozymes, confirmed the predominant selfing mating system of the Lima bean. The selfing mating system, the occurrence of small populations, and low gene flow lead to an interpopulation gene diversity (DST=0.235) higher than the intrapopulation gene diversity (HS=0.032). On the basis of the results, guidelines are given to preserve and exploit the genetic diversity of this threatened species. The results also confirm the independent domestication of the Lima bean in at least two centres, one of which is located at medium elevation in the western valleys of Ecuador and northern Peru.

Notes: Abstract For the catalytic synthesis of carbon nanotubes having fullerene- like diameters, a detailed description of the catalyst preparation is given. Silica-supported catalyst samples (prepared from Co-acetate solution of different pH) were tested in the decomposition of acetylene. Catalysts with various pretreatments (different calcination temperature, time and atmosphere) were compared in the carbon nanotubes production and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The quality and the quantity of the bucky tubes were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). As a final conclusion, it is possible that changing the pH of the solution during catalyst preparation allows control of the quality of the carbon nanotubes, namely the amount of turbostratic straight and helical tubes.

Notes: In order to follow the course of the Arndt-Eistert reaction on a polymeric system, polymethacryol chloride has been reacted with diazomethane in dioxane solution using different molar ratios of diazomethane/acid chloride at different temperatures. The structure of the reaction products has been determined by chemical methods and by infrared spectrometry. The contents of acid chloride and diazoketone units have been evaluated from chlorine and nitrogen analyses, respectively; conductometric and potentiometric titrations allow determination of the percentages of ketene and pseudo-acid groups. From these data it is concluded that the first reaction products of diazomethane on an acid chloride unit are diazoketone groups, as expected; however, the interaction of these primary groups with the neighboring acid chloride units yields principally β-ketocycloketene functions. The presence of these groups and their content have been confirmed by a decarboxylation reaction effected by hydrolysis in acidic medium, during which carbon dioxide is evolved, while the acid content decreases and cyclic ketones are formed. Their presence has also been confirmed by oxidation with dilute nitric acid, which transforms the polymer into polymethacrylic acid. These results of decarboxylation and of oxidation are unreconcilable with the formation of the higher homolog of polymethacrylic acid, the polyisopropenylacetic acid, which would be the normal chainlengthening reaction product of the Arndt-Eistert reaction. Infrared spectrometry shows, in the triple bond region, absorption bands at 4.65 and 4.73 μ, and, in the double bond region, bands at 5.55, 5.70, 5.80, and 6.10 μ. By comparison with the data in the literature, and especially with the spectrum of the glutaric bisdiazoketone, these different bands have been assigned and their relative intensities interpreted. The spectrometric results confirm the presence of diazoketone and β-ketoketene groups; moreover, they show relatively low amounts of cyclopentanone rings and of ester functions.

Notes: The thermal decomposition of 4,4-diphenyl-Δ2-1,2,3-triazolin-5-one (I) was reinvestigated and shown to yield poly-α,α-diphenylglycine (III) instead of the previously reported 3,3,6,6-tetraphenylpiperazine-2,5-dione (II). Differentiation between the two structures was made by molecular weight determinations and spectroscopic analyses. The infrared spectra were studied in detail and compared with model compounds. They showed that the absorption peak at 1470 cm-1 must be attributed to the trans-amide II absorption of the polymer. Furthermore, the polymers were found to contain terminal CONH2 as well as triazolinone or ether functions (from alcohol). Fractionation was performed in three solvents based on solubility differences: dichloroethane (or chloroform), methanol, and n-hexane. All the fractions were characterized by physical methods. A mechanistic investigation revealed that the polymerization process cannot be rationalized by a radical or cationic mechanism, but is compatible with a molecular mechanism involving triazolinone functions at the growing chain ends.

Notes: The hydrogen abstraction from the chlorinated ethanes by chlorine atoms has been investigated in the liquid phase. Rate constants relative to that for hydrogen abstraction from chloroform have been measured between 267° and 333°K using a competition technique. The results are compared with gas-phase data.
