    Notes: The nucleation rate (I) versus temperature type of curves for a Na2O2·CaO·3SiO2 (NC2S3) glass doped with 0.1 wt% platinum, 0.5 wt% Ag2O, and 2.0 wt% P2O5 were determined using a previously developed differential thermal analysis (DTA) technique. In this DTA technique, a constant amount of glass sample was nucleated at selected temperatures for a specific time, followed by a DTA scan at a fixed heating rate. The functional dependence of the maximum intensity of the exothermic DTA crystallization peak ((deltaT)p) or the inverse temperature at the DTA peak maximum (Tp−1) on the nucleation temperature (Tn) was used to determine the nucleation rate versus temperature type of curves. Calculations for qualitatively assessing the dependence of (deltaT)p on Tn were performed using I and crystal growth rate (U) curves for a hypothetical system. Values of (deltaT)p calculated for different degrees of overlap between the I and U curves were compared with those measured experimentally. The (deltaT)p vs Tn curves depended strongly on the overlap of I and U, whereas the Tp−1 vs Tn curves were unaffected by the overlap.

    Notes: The rates for nucleation (I) and crystal growth (U) for a lithium disilicate (Li2O·2SiO2, LS2) glass were determined, as a function of temperature, using a new differential thermal analysis (DTA) technique. This technique requires in situ nucleation and crystal-growth heat treatment of a small amount of powdered sample inside the DTA apparatus, which then are followed by a DTA scan at a constant heating rate. The I and U values that have been determined at selected temperatures for the LS2 glass are in excellent agreement with those reported in the literature. The technique also has been used to determine the concentration of quenched-in nuclei in LS2 glasses prepared from melts that have been quenched at different rates, which are in reasonable agreement with those estimated from theoretical considerations. This new DTA technique is less tedious, requires a smaller amount of sample, and is at least 10 times faster than the conventional methods that have been used to measure I and U. Also, no special sample preparation, other than simply grinding and screening the glass to a particle size that is suitable for use, is required in this technique, whereas grinding, polishing, or etching is required in conventional methods. The excellent agreement in the I or U values that have been determined for the LS2 glass via the present and conventional methods demonstrates the accuracy, validity, and usefulness of this DTA method for rapid determination of the nucleation and crystal-growth rates in glasses.

    Notes: Abstract Phosphorus oxynitride glasses were prepared by remelting 30R2O-20BaO-50P2O5, (R=Li, Na or K) glasses in anhydrous ammonia. The nitrogen content of these metaphosphate melts decreased with increasing size of the alkali ion. The dissolution rate in water and thermal expansion coefficient of the base glasses increased with increasing alkali ion size. The dissolution rate of the oxynitride glasses was lower than that of the base glasses but was essentially independent of the alkali ion. The thermal expansion coefficient of the oxynitride glasses increased with increasing alkali size as observed in other glasses.

    Notes: Abstract The feasibility of studying ionic motion in glass using thermally stimulated polarization (TSPC)/depolarization current (TSDC) techniques was investigated with 4Na2O-96SiO2 and 30PbO-70SiO2 (mol %) glasses. The TSPC peaks in these glasses were dependent on glass composition and attributed to bulk polarization. The high temperature background TSPC is shown to be due to the d.c. conductivity, whereas the TSPC/TSDC peaks in the 4Na2O glass are attributed to shorter range Na+ motion.

    Notes: Abstract Basic fundamentals of the elastic behaviour of a standard linear solid and the internal friction technique based on this model are briefly described. The internal friction (Q −1) caused by various thermally activated processes in vitreous solids are reviewed for several glass compositions in relation to ionic mobility and other relevant properties. Similar relaxation mechanisms characterize many vitreous solids. The relaxation of alkali ions is essentially independent of the glass network former and has an activation energy of 15 to 25 kcal mol−1. Other processes like the interaction of oxygen ions and protons, alkali ions and protons, mixed-alkali ion interaction and the motion of single bonded oxygen ions have an activation energy of 30 to 40 kcal mol−1. The activation energy for relaxation of the glass network is 100 to 120 kcal mol−1.

    Notes: Evidence is presented relating the interfacial bonding strength and the optical transmission of transparent glass fiber reinforced PMMA composites. The temperature dependent (20° to 50°C) optical transmission of composites that contained uncoated 13 μm glass fibers and 13 μm glass fibers coated with divinyltetramethyl disilazane or 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate was found to decrease in the same order as the bond strength of the PMMA/glass fiber interface, namely, trimethoxy silane coated fiber, disilazane coated fiber, and uncoated fiber. SEM photographs showed similar fracture surfaces, clean fiber pull-out, and no apparent bonding of the glass fiber to the PMMA for the composites containing uncoated and disilazane coated fiber, whereas, the composite containing trimethoxy silane coated fiber showed virtually no clean fiber pullout. Additional evidence for differences in the bonding strength is seen in the degradation (penetration of water and fiber whitening) on aging at 23°C in air or water for composites containing uncoated fiber (most degradation), disilazane coated fiber (slight degradation), and trimethoxy silane coated fiber (no degradation). The optical transmission between 20° and 30°C at 600 to 800 nm for the composite containing trimethoxy silane coated fiber decreased the least with increasing temperature (from ∼85% to 70%) while the composite containing uncoated fiber decreased the most (from ∼85% to 32%).
