Leurs origines sont plus variées que ne le laissent penser les recherches qui les présentent souvent comme issus des hautes sphères. Cette diversité apparaît aussi dans les motivations à l’origine de l’engagement charitable. Voie d’accès aux débats publics pour les femmes et les étrangers privés de droits politiques, la philanthropie attire également les élites conservatrices genevoises qui ont perdu la mainmise sur l’État à la suite de la Révolution de 1846, ainsi que les représentants du nouveau pouvoir. Ce livre n’examine pas seulement le discours des philanthropes, il analyse également leurs pratiques sur le terrain et leurs stratégies qui visent à inculquer aux classes populaires des valeurs qui leur sont chères − l’épargne, la responsabilité individuelle, l’ardeur au travail ou la répartition genrée des rôles. En combinant méthodes quantitatives et qualitatives, cet ouvrage restitue la philanthropie genevoise dans sa complexité. Saisie dans sa globalité, à l’échelle d’une ville en pleine mutation, l’action philanthropique se révèle un excellent observatoire de la société, et ce d’autant plus que les Genevois sont très actifs dans les réseaux réformateurs transnationaux. Alors que la philanthropie connaît de nos jours un regain d’intérêt marqué, ce livre offre des clés pour comprendre les ambiguïtés des discours et des pratiques liés à ce phénomène.

    Description: Globalization is a powerful force with far reaching impacts on education and education policy. The growth of large scale international surveys of student achievement and the increasing role played by intergovernmental agencies in education means that the influence that globalization exerts on education is likely to increase even further in the future. This open access book provides a significant and timely investigation into the impacts that globalization has exerted on science curricula in a diverse range of countries using extensive data sets collected by the IEA between 1995 and 2015. Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, this book considers the extent to which there have been changes to the intended and implemented science curricula in different countries over the last 20 years. Consideration is then given as to whether science curricula are becoming increasingly similar across countries over time. Finally the issue of whether the basis of an international core curriculum can be identified is addressed. Readers will gain a unique insight into the extent to which globalization and large scale international assessments have influenced science curricula in the last 20 years within both the primary and secondary phases.

    Description: Undergraduate programs in public health are growing rapidly. At colleges and universities throughout the United States, both the number of programs and the number of students have expanded greatly in the past decade. In response to this trend, the Council for Education of Public Health (CEPH) has begun to accredit undergraduate public health programs, with the first programs approved in 2014. Around the country programs exhibit wide variation, from concentrations in liberal arts colleges to pre-clinical foundations at doctorate-granting universities to undergraduate programs in accredited schools of public health. Faculty, both new and seasoned, are fully aware of the need to integrate undergraduate education in public health with graduate education—but the roadmaps of exactly how to do so are still nascent. The purpose of this Research Topic is to gather articles describing this variation, with the intent that the collective body of work will facilitate analysis and discussion of what makes a quality education and builds a competent workforce.

    Description: Lithium stripping is a crucial process coupled with lithium deposition during the cycling of Li metal batteries. Lithium deposition has been widely studied, whereas stripping as a subsurface process has rarely been investigated. Here we reveal the fundamental mechanism of stripping on lithium by visualizing the interface between stripped lithium and the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). We observed nanovoids formed between lithium and the SEI layer after stripping, which are attributed to the accumulation of lithium metal vacancies. High-rate dissolution of lithium causes vigorous growth and subsequent aggregation of voids, followed by the collapse of the SEI layer, i.e., pitting. We systematically measured the lithium polarization behavior during stripping and find that the lithium cation diffusion through the SEI layer is the rate-determining step. Nonuniform sites on typical lithium surfaces, such as grain boundaries and slip lines, greatly accelerated the local dissolution of lithium. The deeper understanding of this buried interface stripping process provides beneficial clues for future lithium anode and electrolyte design.

    Description: The common understanding of e-learning has shifted over the last decade from the traditional learning objects portals to learning paradigms that enforces constructivism, discovery learning and social collaboration. Such type of learning takes place outside the formal academic settings (e.g., seminars or lectures) where a learning environment is created by using some kind of web application mashup tools. The use of these mashup tools moves the learning environment further away from being a monolithic platform towards providing an open set of learning tools, an unrestricted number of actors, and an open corpus of artifacts, either pre-existing or created by the learning process – freely combinable and utilizable by learners within their learning activities. However, collaboration, mashup and contextualization can only be supported through services, which can be created and modified dynamically based on middlewares to suit the current needs and situations of learners. This article identifies middlewares suitable for creating effective personal learning environment based on Web 2.0 mashup tools. This article also proposed a general framework for constructing such personal learning environments based on Ambient Learning realized by learning agents and the use of Enterprise Mashup servers.

    Description: A new energy management system (EMS) is presented for small scale microgrids (MGs). The proposed EMS focuses on minimizing the daily cost of the energy drawn by the MG from the main electrical grid and increasing the self-consumption of local renewable energy resources (RES). This is achieved by determining the appropriate reference value for the power drawn from the main grid and forcing the MG to accurately follow this value by controlling a battery energy storage system. A mixed integer linear programming algorithm determines this reference value considering a time-of-use tariff and short-term forecasting of generation and consumption. A real-time predictive controller is used to control the battery energy storage system to follow this reference value. The results obtained show the capability of the proposed EMS to lower the daily operating costs for the MG customers. Experimental studies on a laboratory-based MG have been implemented to demonstrate that the proposed EMS can be implemented in a realistic environment.
