Notes: Summary Nest populations grow rapidly while the nest is young, then stabilise to a fairly constant level in maturity. Relationships between population parameters, queen's weight and fungus comb weight are all approximately linear, with the exception of soldier and presoldiers numbers. Relationships between mound parameters and nest population are approximately linear, so that data from surveys of mound size and density can be used to estimate termite populations.

Notes: Summary Production in mature termite nests consists of a seasonal brood of reproductives and a continuous turnover of steriles. The sterile population of the nest remained fairly constant, with no regular seasonal fluctuations. Growth rates of steriles were estimated by interrupting the input and following the “missing cohort”. Estimated mean values of standing crop biomass and annual production in a mature nest were used to calculate a production-to-biomass ratio. In conjunction with data on the density of nests in the field, the biomass and production per hectare were estimated.

Description / Table of Contents: Resume Des nids adultes deMacrotermes subhyalinus contenant 6,6 kg de poids sec d'adultes stériles, ont produit 2,35 kg de poids sec d'ailés chaque année.
Notes: Summary Mature nests ofMacrotermes subhyalinus contained a mean standing crop of 6.6. kg dry weight of sterile adults, and produced 2.35 kg dry weight of alates each year. Small nests contained a much larger proportion of larvae, and somewhat different proportions of the different larval instars, both features being consistant with a rapid increase in population. They also contained a larger proportion of soldiers in the adult population than in mature nests. Mound dimensions and nest parameters were all linearly related, and positively and significantly correlated.

Notes: Summary Debris-piles made byHodotermes mossambicus dealates digging-in after a nuptial flight were found in bushed grassland in central Kenya following unseasonal rain. Their density and survival were estimated, and their distribution examined. These are the first records of post-flight settlement density and survival in the field.

Notes: Summary Mature nests ofMacrotermes michaelseni were sampled at approximately monthly intervals over two years. A single large brood of reproductives was produced each year, which took about seven months from egg-laying to maturity, and sometimes remained in the nest for several more months before flighting was complete. The sterile population of the nest was remarkably constant through the year, showing no response to the seasonal rainfall pattern or to the presence of the developing reproductive brood in the nest. Some changes were observed in the course of a severe drought, resulting in a gradual reduction in the sterile populations of nests, and in the overall termite population of the area.
