    Description: Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery has been widely used in remote sensing and photogrammetry for some time. Increasingly often, apart from recording images in the red-green-blue (RGB) range, multispectral images are also recorded. It is important to accurately assess the radiometric quality of UAV imagery to eliminate interference that might reduce the interpretation potential of the images and distort the results of remote sensing analyses. Such assessment should consider the influence of the atmosphere and the seasonal and weather conditions at the time of acquiring the imagery. The assessment of the radiometric quality of images acquired in different weather conditions is crucial in terms of improving the interpretation potential of the imagery and improving the accuracy of determining the indicators used in remote sensing and in environmental monitoring. Until now, the assessment of radiometric quality of UAV imagery did not consider the influence of meteorological conditions at different times of year. This paper presents an assessment of the influence of weather conditions on the quality of UAV imagery acquired in the visible range. This study presents the methodology for assessing image quality, considering the weather conditions characteristic of autumn in Central and Eastern Europe. The proposed solution facilitates the assessment of the radiometric quality of images acquired in the visible range. Using the objective indicator of quality assessment developed in this study, images were classified into appropriate categories, allowing, at a later stage, to improve the results of vegetation indices. The obtained results confirm that the proposed quality assessment methodology enables the objective assessment of the quality of imagery acquired in different meteorological conditions.

The next stage in the development of photogrammetry from low altitudes was the development of the imagery data from UAV oblique images. Imagery data was obtained from side-facing directions. As in professional photogrammetric systems, it is possible to record footprints of tree crowns and other forms of the natural environment. The use of a multi-camera system will significantly reduce one of the main UAV photogrammetry limitations (especially in the case of multirotor UAV) which is a reduction of the ground coverage area, while increasing the number of images, increasing the number of flight lines, and reducing the surface imaged during one flight. The approach proposed in this paper is based on using several head cameras to enhance the imaging geometry during one flight of UAV for mapping. As part of the research work, a multi-camera system consisting of several cameras was designed to increase the total Field of View (FOV). Thanks to this, it will be possible to increase the ground coverage area and to acquire image data effectively. The acquired images will be mosaicked in order to limit the total number of images for the mapped area. As part of the research, a set of cameras was calibrated to determine the interior orientation parameters (IOPs). Next, the method of image alignment using the feature image matching algorithms was presented. In the proposed approach, the images are combined in such a way that the final image has a joint centre of projections of component images. The experimental results showed that the proposed solution was reliable and accurate for the mapping purpose. The paper also presents the effectiveness of existing transformation models for images with a large coverage subjected to initial geometric correction due to the influence of distortion.

More and more often, in addition to acquiring images in the visible range, images in other spectral ranges, e.g., near infrared (NIR), are also recorded. During low-altitude photogrammetric studies, small-format images of large coverage along and across the flight route are acquired that provide information about the imaged objects. The novelty presented in this research is the use of the modified method of the dark-object subtraction technique correction with a modified Walthall’s model for correction of images obtained from a low altitude. The basic versions of these models have often been used to radiometric correction of satellite imagery and classic aerial images. However, with the increasing popularity of imaging from low altitude (in particular in the NIR range), it has also become necessary to perform radiometric correction for this type of images. The radiometric correction of images acquired from low altitudes is important from the point of view of eliminating disturbances which might reduce the capabilities of image interpretation. The radiometric correction of images acquired from low altitudes should take into account the influence of the atmosphere but also the geometry of illumination, which is described by the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF). This paper presents a method of radiometric correction for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) NIR images. The study presents a method of low-altitude image acquisition and a fusion of the method of the dark-object subtraction technique correction with a modified Walthall’s model. The proposed solution performs the radiometric correction of images acquired in the NIR range with the root mean square error (RMSE) value not exceeding 10% with respect to the original images. The obtained results confirm that the proposed method will provide effective compensation of radiometric disturbances in UAV images.

    Description: The paper describes and presents a new calculation strategy for the determination of the aircraft’s resultant position using the GPS (Global Positioning System) SPP (Single Point Positioning) code method. The paper developed a concept of using the weighted average model with the use of measuring weights to improve the quality of determination of the coordinates and accuracy of GPS SPP positioning. In this research, measurement weights were used as a function of the number of GPS satellites being tracked, and geometric PDOP (Position Dilution of Precision) coefficient. The calculations were made using navigation data recorded by two independent GPS receivers: Thales Mobile Mapper and Topcon HiPerPro. On the basis of the obtained results, it was found that the RMS (Root Mean Square) accuracy of positioning for XYZ geocentric coordinates was better than 1.2% to 33.7% for the weighted average method compared to a single GPS SPP solution. The proposed approach is therefore of practical application in air navigation to improve the quality of aircraft positioning.

    Description: The aim of this paper is to present the problem of the implementation of the EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) data for the processing of aircraft position determination. The main aim of the research is to develop a new computational strategy which might improve the performance of the EGNOS system in aviation, based on navigation solutions of an aircraft position, using several GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) onboard receivers. The results of an experimental test conducted by the Cessna 172 at EPDE (European Poland Deblin) (ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) code, N51°33.07’/E21°53.52’) aerodrome in Dęblin are presented and discussed in this paper. Two GNSS navigation receivers with the EGNOS positioning function for monitoring changes in the parameters of the aircraft position in real time during the landing phase were installed onboard a Cessna 172. Based on obtained research findings, it was discovered that the positioning accuracy was not higher than 2.1 m, and the integrity of positioning did not exceed 19 m. Moreover, the availability parameter was found to equal 1 (or 100%); also, no intervals in the continuity of the operation of the EGNOS system were recorded. In the paper, the results of the air test from Dęblin were compared with the parameters of positioning quality from the air test conducted in Chełm (ICAO code: EPCD, N51°04’57.8” E23°26’15”). In the air test in Chełm, the obtained parameters of EGNOS quality positioning were: better than 4.9 m for accuracy, less than 35.5 m for integrity, 100% for availability, and no breaks in continuity. Based on the results of the air tests in Dęblin and Chełm, it was concluded that the parameters of the EGNOS positioning quality in aviation for the SBAS (Satellite Based Augmentation System) APV (Approach to Vertical guidance) procedure were satisfied in accordance with the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) requirements. The presented research method can be utilized in the SBAS APV landing procedure in Polish aviation. In this paper, the results of PDOP (Position Dilution of Precision) are presented and compared to the two air tests in Dęblin and Chełm. The maximum results of PDOP amounted to 1.4 in the air test in Dęblin, whereas they equaled 4.0 in the air test in Chełm. The paper also shows how the EGNOS system improved the aircraft position in relation to the only GPS solution. In this context, the EGNOS system improved the aircraft position from about 78% to 95% for each ellipsoidal coordinate axis.

    Description: The aim of the paper was to study the possibility of using unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) to determine the shoreline of natural watercourses.According to the Water Law, the shoreline is defined by: the edge of the shore if it is visible, and in other cases it is the boundary of persistent grass growth, or the line, which is determined on the basis of the average water level of a period of at least 10 years. The study included an analysis of the possibility of determining the shore line in all of these cases, using aerial photos obtained from an unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) on a particular stretch of the river Narew.In order to determine the shoreline defined by the edge of the shore, a point cloud together with the necessary GIS tools were used to generate planes which then made it possible to determine that edge. Defining the shoreline using this method was done with an accuracy of ±0.21 m.The study shows that the best results for determining the shoreline were obtained using either the edge of the shore or the line, which is determined according to the average water level of a period of at least 10 years.Due to the very ambiguous course of the shoreline defined by the boundary of persistent grass growth, it would be advisable to eliminate this remove from the Water Law.

    Description: In the last few years, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) equipped with compact digital cameras, have become a cheap and efficient alternative to classic aerial photogrammetry and close-range photogrammetry. Low-altitude photogrammetry has great potential not only in the development of orthophoto maps but is also increasingly used in surveying and rapid mapping. This paper presents a practical aspect of the application of the custom homemade low-cost UAV, equipped with an action camera, to obtain images from low altitudes and develop a digital elevation model of the excavation. The conducted analyses examine the possibilities of using low-cost UAVs to deliver useful photogrammetric products. The experiments were carried out on a closed excavation in the town of Mince (north-eastern Poland). The flight over the examined area was carried out autonomously. A photogrammetric network was designed, and the reference areas in the mine were measured using the Global Navigation Satellite System-Real Time Kinematic (GNSS-RTK) method to perform accuracy analyses of the excavation 3D model. Representation of the created numerical terrain model was a dense point cloud. The average height difference between the generated dense point cloud and the reference model was within the range of 0.01–0.13 m. The difference between the volume of the excavation measured by the GNSS kinematic method and the volume measured on the basis of a dense point cloud was less than 1%. The obtained results show that the application of the low-cost UAV equipped with an action camera with a wide-angle lens, allows for obtaining high-accuracy images comparable to classic, compact digital cameras.
