Notes: [Auszug] THIS note gives a brief account of a radioactive tracer technique for the detection and estimation of the short-lived aliphatic free radicals; it is being used in both dynamic and static experiments. In a different way, radioactive indicators have previously been used in the study of free ...

Notes: Abstract Ferrous alloys containing significant volumefractions of chromium carbides were formulated so as tocontain an overall chromium level of 15% (by weight) buta nominal metal matrix chromium concentration of only 11%. Their oxidation at 850°C inpure oxygen led to either protectiveCr2O3 scale formation accompaniedby subsurface carbide dissolution or rapid growth ofiron-rich oxide scales associated with rapid alloy surface recession, which engulfedthe carbides before they could dissolve. Carbide sizewas important in austenitic alloys: an as-castFe-15Cr-0.5C alloy contained relatively coarse carbides and failed to form aCr2O3 scale, whereas the samealloy when hot-forged to produce very fine carbidesoxidized protectively. In ferritic alloys, however, evencoarse carbides dissolved sufficiently rapidly to provide the chromium flux necessary to formand maintain the growth of a Cr2O3scale, a result attributed to the high diffusivity ofthe ferrite phase. Small additions of silicon to theas-cast Fe-15Cr-0.5C alloy rendered it ferritic and led toprotective Cr2O3 growth. However, when the silicon-containing alloy was made austenitic(by the addition of nickel), it still formed aprotective Cr2O3 scale, showing that the principal function of silicon was inmodifying the scale-alloy interface.

Notes: Abstract Cosmic ray neutron interactions with indium, used as electrical contact within a Ge diode, the diode itself and the surrounding materials can give rise to a large number of photopeaks in the 50 to 1300 keV region of background spectra of Ge spectrometers with a passive shield. The nuclear processes and decays involved in the production of these photopeaks are discussed. These cosmic ray produced photopeaks are compared with those due to primordial radionuclides. Some useful information can be drawn from these measurements on the contribution of the cosmic rays on the background of Ge detectors with a passive shield.

Notes: Abstract Isozyme analysis of young leaf tissue was performed on progeny produced from cultured ovules resulting from crosses of seedless × seedless grapes. Two polymorphic loci, Idh and Gpi-c, were found to segregate in a simple Mendelian fashion in the populations examined. Analyses of 70 seedlings indicated that most seedlings produced by this method were zygotic. Isozyme data of 11 plants from 5 polyembryonic ovules, along with data previously reported, suggest that several mechanisms may be operative in grape that give rise to polyembryony: 1) fertilization and development of more than one cell in the embryo sac, 2) adventive embryogenesis from the zygote, or 3) embryogenic development of gametic cells in addition to the zygote in the embryo sac.

Notes: Summary Genetic linkage analysis was performed using two segregating populations of citrus. One population arose from an intergeneric backcross of Citrus grandis (L.) Osb. cv ‘Thong Dee’ and Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf. cv ‘Pomeroy’, using the former as the recurrent (female) parent. The other population came from an interspecific backcross of C. reticulata Blanco cv ‘Clementine’ and C. x paradisi Macf. cv ‘Duncan’, using the former as the recurrent (male) parent. A total of 11 isozyme and 58 restriction fragment length polymorphisms were found to segregate in a monogenic fashion in one or both populations. Linkage analysis revealed that 62 of the loci examined mapped to 11 linkage groups, while 7 loci segregated independently from all other markers. Gene order was highly conserved between the maps generated from the two divergent segregating populations. Possible applications of the use of such maps in tree fruit breeding are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The concentrations of226Ra, As, and NO 3 − have been measured in Lake Ontario waters off Eldorado Nuclear Limited's Port Granby radioactive waste management site. Only one sample gave a226Ra value higher than the Ontario criterion for public surface water supplies. The highest levels of As and NO 3 − were below the Ontario criteria. The leachate plume appears to move parallel to the shoreline in the direction of the prevailing wind but disperses rapidly reaching ambient levels within 150 m of the source. The leaching of these pollutants has only a minor effect on the lake water quality.

Notes: Abstract The levels of 144Ce, 137Cs, 125Sb, and 90Sr in the open waters of the Great Lakes were measured over the period 1973–81. The levels were found to be very low. 144Ce was detected only up to 1975 after which it dropped below the detection limit. The data indicate that the concentrations of the remaining three radionuclides have decreased with time. 90Sr and 137Cs provide essentially all of the radiological dose from drinking Great Lakes water. The dose equivalant commitments have been calculated from these measurements and found to be well within the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement's water quality objective for radioactivity.
