    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Wirkungsgeschwindigkeiten von intravenös injiziertem Vitamin K1, Methylnaphthochinon und Synkavit in Vitamin-K-frei ernährten Küken wurden verglichen.     Notes: Abstract Flocculation of phytoplankters into large, rapidly sinking aggregates has been implicated as a mechanism of vertical transport of phytoplankton to the sea floor which could have global significance. The formation rate of phytoplankton aggregates depends on the rate at which single cells collide, which is mainly physically controlled, and on the probability of adhesion upon collision (=coagulation efficiency, stickiness), which depends on physico-chemical and biological properties of the cells. We describe here an experimental method to quantify the stickiness of phytoplankton cells and demonstrate that three species of diatoms grown in the laboratory (Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Thalassiosira pseudonana, Skeletonema costatum) are indeed significantly sticky and form aggregates upon collision. The dependency of stickiness on nutrient limitation and growth was studied in the two latter species by investigating variation in stickiness as batch cultures aged. In nutrient repleteT. pseudonana cells stickiness is very low (〈 5 × 10−3), but increases by more than two orders of magnitude as cell growth ceases and the cells become nutrient limited. Stickiness ofS. costatum cells is much less variable, and even nutrient replete cells are significantly sticky. Stickiness is highest (〉 10−1) forS. costatum cells in the transition between the exponential and the stationary growth phase. The implications for phytoplankton aggregate formation and subsequent sedimentation in the sea of these two different types of stickiness patterns are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Copepods contain dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) in their tissues in addition to the DMSP in their gut contents and therefore constitute an additional pool of DMSP in the ocean. In the estuarine copepod Temora longicornis Müller, this dynamic pool of DMSP is reduced when external salinity decreases. In the present study the mechanism(s) used by T. longicornis to adjust its DMSP content were examined. Four possible mechanisms were tested in experiments conducted between July 1997 and May 1999: (1) DMSP cleavage, (2) demethylation, (3) conversion to methionine, and (4) release from the body. Tissue extracts of T. longicornis did not exhibit the ability to cleave or demethylate DMSP. In incubation experiments, when external salinity decreased, T. longicornis individuals reduced their DMSP content without increasing their methionine content. The total amount of DMSP in the incubation vials was conserved regardless of salinity. The copepods retained most of the DMSP in their tissues in 30‰ water, but when salinity was reduced to 20‰, the copepods released 41 to 55% of their body DMSP to the surrounding medium; 89 to 91% of the total DMSP was recovered. This suggests that estuarine copepods represent a reservoir of DMSP, which is released as dissolved DMSP upon salinity decline. Therefore, while osmoregulation by these copepods may have little impact on the chemical properties of DMSP, it will affect the partitioning of DMSP between particulate and dissolved phases in the water column.

    Notes: Abstract. Stationary spectra offer information on the interplay between the structures and the nature of electronic excitations reflecting bonding properties, as shown by comparing Sin with Agn (n=4-6) clusters. In order to study the dynamical properties, simulations and analysis of femtosecond (fs) time-resolved pump–probe or pump–dump signals have been carried out, which allows us to determine the timescales and the nature of configurational changes versus internal vibrational relaxation (IVR) in electronic ground or excited states. For this purpose we have developed a multi-state ab initio molecular dynamics (involving ground as well as adiabatic or non-adiabatic excited electronic states) on the timescale of the nuclear motion, using the time evolution of a thermal ensemble in the Wigner representation. The combination of ab initio quantum-chemical methods used for the molecular dynamics ‘on the fly’ and the Wigner-distribution approach for the description of the motion of the nuclei also allowed the accurate determination of pump–probe and pump–dump signals under temperature-dependent initial conditions. We use this novel combination of methods to investigate the dynamics in excited states of non-stoichiometric NanFn-1 clusters with a single excess electron. The timescales of the structural relaxation in excited states versus intramolecular vibrational relaxation processes have been determined, as illustrated for the example of Na4F3. This is the first study of the system with 15 degrees of freedom for which the dynamics in the excited states has been carried out without the precalculation of the energy surfaces.

    Notes: The unimodular theory of gravity with a constrained determinant gμν is equivalent to general relativity with an arbitrary cosmological constant Λ. Within this framework Λ appears as an integration constant unrelated to any parameters in the Lagrangian. In a quantum theory the state vector of the universe is thus expected to be a superposition of states with different values of Λ. Following Hawking's argument one concludes that the fully renormalized Λ=0 completely dominates other contributions to the integral over Λ in the vacuum functional. In this scenario of the unimodular theory of gravity the cosmological constant problem is solved. Furthermore, this formulation naturally provides an external (cosmic) time for time ordering of measurements so that the quantum version of the unimodular theory can have a normal "Schrödinger'' form of time development, giving a simpler interpretation to the equation of the universe.
