Description: The recently discovered periodic comet Machholz 1986 VIII (1986e) travels closer to the sun than any known planet and any known comet with an orbital period of less than 150 years, thus providing astronomers with a unique object for studying cometary evolution. The comet is spiraling steadily closer to the sun, from perihelion distance q [unknown] 0.9 astronomical unit at about A.D. 700 to q [unknown] 0.13 at present (orbital period, 5.25 years), to an expected q [unknown] 0.03 by about 2450; should the comet survive such increasingly close perihelion passages, q will begin steadily to increase shortly thereafter. A review of observations made since discovery is presented, together with a discussion of numerical investigations of the comet's orbit over 4000 years and prospects for observing the upcoming return to perihelion in 1991.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Green, D W -- Rickman, H -- Porter, A C -- Meech, K J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1990 Mar 2;247(4946):1063-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17800064" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: How does the bilingual brain distinguish and control which language is in use? Previous functional imaging experiments have not been able to answer this question because proficient bilinguals activate the same brain regions irrespective of the language being tested. Here, we reveal that neuronal responses within the left caudate are sensitive to changes in the language or the meaning of words. By demonstrating this effect in populations of German-English and Japanese-English bilinguals, we suggest that the left caudate plays a universal role in monitoring and controlling the language in use.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Crinion, J -- Turner, R -- Grogan, A -- Hanakawa, T -- Noppeney, U -- Devlin, J T -- Aso, T -- Urayama, S -- Fukuyama, H -- Stockton, K -- Usui, K -- Green, D W -- Price, C J -- 051067/Wellcome Trust/United Kingdom -- Wellcome Trust/United Kingdom -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2006 Jun 9;312(5779):1537-40.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Wellcome Department of Imaging Neuroscience, University College London, London WC1N 3BG, UK.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16763154" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: [Auszug] In the I keV band, the efficiency of a detector is equal to the transmission of its window, T(E). We shall represent the continuous X-ray spectrum as a power law over the J keV band: I(E)=I0 o (E/Ek)-2 photons per (cm2 s ster keV), where Ek is the carbon K absorption edge energy (284 eV). Notes: Abstract Wind-tunnel simulations of neutrally-stable atmospheric boundary-layer flow over an isolated, low hill (Askervein) have been carried out at three different length scales in two wind-tunnel facilities. The objectives of these simulations were to assess the reliability with which changes in mean wind and turbulence structure induced by the prototype hill on boundary-layer flow can be reproduced in the wind tunnel, and to determine the relative impact of certain modelling approaches (surface roughness, model scale, measurement techniques, etc.) on the quality of the simulations. The wind-tunnel results are compared with each other and with full-scale data and are shown in general to model the prototype flow very well. The effects of relaxing the criterion of aerodynamic roughness of the model surface were limited to certain regions in the lee of the hill and were linked to separation phenomena.

Notes: Abstract Recently available spectroscopic data have been used to derive new values for the enthalpies of formation at 298.15 K of gaseous ThO, ThO2, UO, UO2, UO3, and PuO, and PuO2. These new values of δH f 0 (298.15 K) are in good agreement with previously recommended values for UO, UO2, and PuO, but not for the other molecules. Inconsistencies among evaluated thermodynamic data have been resolved for ThO (g) and UO3 (g). Recommended values are derived for PuO2 (g) and ThO2 (g); however, additional experimental work on these molecules is needed.

Notes: A theoretical study has been made of longitudinal dispersion mechanisms during steady flow of a fluid through unconsolidated spherical beads. The mathematical model utilizes a step function input of thermal energy and presents the solution for the transient behvior of the system. The longitudinal dispersion of the step input is considered the result of eddy mixing of the fluid, molecular conduction within the fluid, and a finite time lag for heat transfer to occur between fluid and particle. The latter mechanism is characterized by both a fluid film resistance and an intraparticle resistance. The exact solution, involving an infinite integral, is approximated to an error function form. The character of the contribution of each mechanism is apparent from the form of the approximate solution, and furthermore, the contributions are shown to be additive to yield the total dispersion. The conditions for convergence to the aproximate solution are indicated. The equations are presented such that the analysis is applicable to both heat and mass transfer processes.
